pressure with a frequency greater
than the upper limit of human
hearing. Although this limit varies
from person to person, it is
approximately 20 kilohertz
(20,000 hertz) in healthy, young

•Focused high-energy ultrasound pulses can
be used to break calculi such as kidney
stones and gallstones into fragments small
enough to be passed from the body without
undue difficulty, a process known as
lithotripsy.
