InternationalMobile Subscriber Identity or IMSI / mziˈɪ ː/ is used to identify the user of a mobile network and is unique •It is sent by the phone to the network for transfer of information and is stored as a 64 bit field. • •It also gets information and details from the network onto the mobile via a HLR (Home Location Register) when on its own network or is copied when roaming •IMSI’s are a 15 digit long number, but can be shorter: – MTN South Africa's old IMSIs are 14

- 4. This application allowssubscribers to make use of two or more lines (IMSI numbers) without having to purchase more than one SIM Card. For example the subscriber can hold a business IMSI and a personal IMSI on the same SIM Card, or this feature also allows prepaid/ postpaid swapping features on a single SIM card. ADVANTAGES: •It could prevent subscribers from having a personal SIM Card with one network and a business SIM Card with another network or vice versa. •The network Operator could for example offer subscribers a multi IMSI card which will keep all the subscriber’s business (both personal and business) within their own network. •Subscribers would only need to purchase one phone whilst still having the luxury of having two IMSI numbers. •Roaming costs could be reduced as partner networks (preferential rates) could be selected Dual/Multi IMSI

Single IMSI VMulti IMSI • Domestic Mobile Network Operators (MNO) usually provide Single Network SIM cards (aka Single-IMSI). • A Single Network GSM Connectivity service allows to connect to a single network per country. • BUT…depending on the national and international roaming agreements, the same SIM cards may be able to connect to multiple MNOs when roaming in a different country or even at the original country (e.g., Free Mobile subscribers can connect to the O2 network in United Kingdom ).
