Mississippi River Gorge Half-Day Canoe Trip
Saturday, October 1, 10 am – 2 pm
Paddle from East River Flats to Hidden Falls
Discover the National Park that exists right in the heart of the Twin Cities Metro area. Used by
American Indians for food, trade and water long before Europeans visited the “New World,” the
Mississippi River helped shape the Twin Cities' ecology and culture. Explore the river and its
history in Wilderness Inquiry’s 24-foot Voyageur canoes, which hold 6-10 paddlers. Formed more
than 10,000 years ago when glacial River Warren cut a gorge over 600 feet deep, the Mississippi
River is more than the border between Minneapolis and St. Paul. It is an “urban wilderness”
corridor of rich river habitat. Tucked amidst sandy beaches and towering cottonwood trees, the
river provides habitat for some of the 270 different species of birds that migrate through and rest in
the Mississippi's steep bluffs. The Lakota called the river “Hah-wkpa" (River of the Falls) after what
is now called St. Anthony Falls. In the 1800's early settlers used the power of St. Anthony Falls to
grind wheat, giving birth to the flour milling industry. Come enjoy the world-class river that flows
though your back yard. Fee: $45 per adult and $30 per youth. For more information and to register:

The Soap Factory Presents: The Haunted Basement
October 1 – October 31
Soap Factory, 514 Second Street SE
This October, The Soap Factory’s Haunted Basement will once again shock and amaze horror
fans, Halloween fanatics and art lovers. Now in its fifth year, The Haunted Basement is again
completely re-imagined and pushes past the limits of scary to that which is utterly disturbing. Come
see what lies beneath the floors of this 125-year-old factory and experience what happens when art
collides with horror. The Haunted Basement is no ordinary haunted house—it is designed entirely
by artists. New each year, artists draw inspiration from unusual sources to create something
unimaginably creepy and conceptually unique. The Haunted Basement targets real psychological
fears and promises nightmares for weeks to come. In The Haunted Basement’s history over 300
people have been pushed to their breaking point and cried “Uncle.” In 2010 one patron stated, “I’m
drenched in sweat from being so scared.” The Twin Cities Paranormal Society has investigated
The Soap Factory on multiple occasions, concluding that the basement is, indeed, haunted. If the
basement alone doesn’t scare you, the custom smells made by St. Croix Sensory and amazing
special effects makeup from artist Brett Dorrian will have you second-guessing reality and
shuddering with terror. Tickets sell out quickly for The Haunted Basement. Tickets are $21 and can
be purchased at www.soapfactory.org. Buy yours soon or suffer the agony of having to wait until
next year. All participants must sign a waiver and be 18+.

Telling River Stories Web Site
The “Telling River Stories” Web site can be found at www.riverstories.umn.edu. Telling River
Stories is a collaborative project that populates the urban Mississippi River corridor with stories of
how the city and the river have been jointly developed. The site highlights stories about the people
and places that make up today’s urban river landscape. In addition to the Web site, future
programs and on-site installations will be part of the overall project. The Telling River Stories
program is part of the River Life: Mississippi and U project, a partnership of the University of
Minnesota’s Institute on the Environment, Institute for Advanced Study, Water Resource Center,
College of Design and Urban Studies Program. The River Life project connects University
research, teaching and civic engagement programs with off-campus partners who are working to
reinvigorate the urban Mississippi River. In the coming weeks, project team members will be
adding materials to the site’s coverage of “river stories” in the Twin Cities, St. Louis and New
Orleans. Check back often to view the progress.

Mill City Farmers Market – Apples! Saturday, September 17, 8 am – 1 pm Chicago Avenue between Second Street South and West River Parkway Whether we like it or not, autumn is on the horizon. The good news is that means apples are in! Join Market Chef Nick Schneider at this week’s 10:00 a.m. Cooking Demo for a demo with this late season gem. From 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., enjoy the music of Dan Newton (“Daddy Squeeze“), who has been playing offbeat accordion music since 1987, when he won the Nebraska State Accordion Contest at the Czech Festival in Wilber, Nebraska. He has used the squeeze box for playing all kinds of music not normally associated with free-reed instruments, as well as standard accordion material. The Art Market will feature Hmong ABC, ceramics by Tom Jaszczak and Heather Wang, Barnswallow Garden and Woodsport. For more information (including what products are expected at the market this week – don’t forget your shopping list), recipes and to sign up for the market’s email newsletter: http://www.millcityfarmersmarket.org. Market Photos Sought Market organizers have seen some great pictures throughout this summer, and now they want to invite all of their customers to share the cream of their crop! Tweet @MCFarmersMKT with #marketmemories with your favorite picture, and the Market crew will vote on a photo that best captures what this market is all about. The winning picture will be featured on their website’s main page and will be sent out in the Mill City Beet! So let’s see your best pictures of the sheep at the Mini Farm, their farmers colorful produce or the Market’s unique location in the historic Mill District, or…or…or…! Let the tweeting begin! Mississippi River Gorge Half-Day Canoe Trip Saturday, October 1, 10 am – 2 pm Paddle from East River Flats to Hidden Falls Discover the National Park that exists right in the heart of the Twin Cities Metro area. Used by American Indians for food, trade and water long before Europeans visited the “New World,” the Mississippi River helped shape the Twin Cities' ecology and culture. Explore the river and its history in Wilderness Inquiry’s 24-foot Voyageur canoes, which hold 6-10 paddlers. Formed more than 10,000 years ago when glacial River Warren cut a gorge over 600 feet deep, the Mississippi River is more than the border between Minneapolis and St. Paul. It is an “urban wilderness” corridor of rich river habitat. Tucked amidst sandy beaches and towering cottonwood trees, the river provides habitat for some of the 270 different species of birds that migrate through and rest in the Mississippi's steep bluffs. The Lakota called the river “Hah-wkpa" (River of the Falls) after what is now called St. Anthony Falls. In the 1800's early settlers used the power of St. Anthony Falls to grind wheat, giving birth to the flour milling industry. Come enjoy the world-class river that flows though your back yard. Fee: $45 per adult and $30 per youth. For more information and to register: http://www.wildernessinquiry.org/destinations/index.php?dest=mississippiriverdaytrip. The Soap Factory Presents: The Haunted Basement October 1 – October 31 Soap Factory, 514 Second Street SE This October, The Soap Factory’s Haunted Basement will once again shock and amaze horror fans, Halloween fanatics and art lovers. The Haunted Basement targets real psychological fears and promises nightmares for weeks to come. In The Haunted Basement’s history over 300 people have been pushed to their breaking point and cried “Uncle.” In 2010 one patron stated, “I’m drenched in sweat from being so scared.” The Twin Cities Paranormal Society has investigated The Soap Factory on multiple occasions, concluding that the basement is, indeed, haunted. If the basement alone doesn’t scare you, the custom smells made by St. Croix Sensory and amazing special effects makeup from artist Brett Dorrian will have you second-guessing reality and shuddering with terror. Tickets sell out quickly for The Haunted Basement. Tickets are $21 and can be purchased at www.soapfactory.org. Buy yours soon or suffer the agony of having to wait until next year.
