Grain to Glass and Malt Barley Production
Pilot Project—Integrating local agriculture and craft
brewery industry development--Northern New Mexico
Presented by Duncan Sill and Dan Irion
at University of Colorado-Colorado Springs January 15,2017
+
What is “Grain to Glass”?
n  Craft Brewery concept—introduced by Taos Mesa Brewing Company (Taos, New
Mexico)
n  Grant funding from Venture Acceleration Fund (LANL)
n  Leveraging other regional resources and interests
n  NCNMEDD provided funding for consultant for data, monitoring and preliminary
economic assessment activities
n  Other in-kind
n  Not just economics but community and environmental impact critical objectives
n  Impact on local farmers and other stakeholders
n  Value added aspects—individual and collective
n  Does it help achieve resiliency?
n  Where to start? Timeliness and beginning efforts….
+
Craft Brewery Industry Snapshot
(source: Brewers Association, December 2016)
n  Brewery Count: There are now 5,005 breweries in the U.S.
compared to 10,000 wineries. Almost all (99%) are small and
independent craft brewers.
n  Continued Growth for the Segment: By mid-year 2016,
small and independent breweries grew by 8 %
n  Colorado and NM combined has ~ 330 operating breweries;
economic impact ~ $3 Billion annum; ~25,000 jobs (FTE)
+
Project Management Aspects
n  Background of current scope:
n  Community post economic disruption
n  Major Job Loss and Tax Revenue Impact—limited options to
recover
n  Reassess regional resources (natural and constructed)
n  Preliminary pilot project to determine viability of malt barley
production to support craft brewery industry
n  Economic Assessment (preliminary)
+
Approach: local and small scale, data based
n  Tailored to community’s resources and capacity
n  Short term vs. long term impact
n  Agriculture production and selected farms
n  Selection of seeds and other factors
n  Moravian 69 and Scarlett varieties—2-row malt barley
n  6 farms in Des Montes (Taos, NM) and Questa, NM area—40 acres total
n  On-going monitoring and data collection
n  Investments—where is it occurring? Accountability? Equity?
n  Planning and Risk Management—stakeholders and collaborations; policy
and governance; communications
+
Key Elements to be Assessed…
n  Resiliency Focus: preparation/prevention, adaption, recovery--on
industry development with re-engaging community and private
enterprises to address value chain of various sectors
n  Agriculture & food system value chain
n  Value-added—craft brewery industry and beyond
n  Community and environmental impact
n  Rural vs. Urban—interfaces and resources, demographic shifts
n  Infrastructure assets—existing conditions & determining gaps
n  Collaborations—private and public
n  Story/Content development re: Americana
