Introduction:
◦ There is no best method of nursing care delivery. The model is a good as the competency of
the nursing staff. There are three important factors which must be kept in mind:
◦ 1. The allocation of work has to be done keeping in view the needs of patients and possibly of
student nurses.
◦ The members of the ward team must function according to their qualifications.
◦ The abilities of the staff members must be matched to the requirements of the patients.

◦ 1. The functional method
◦ 2. team nursing
◦ 3 The case method
◦ 4. Primary nursing
◦ 5. A combination of above

The functional method
◦ In this method, the emphasis is on the task. Selected functions are assigned to staff members
who are qualified to carry out those functions. For example; one nurse give medications, another
might take vital signs and third one might do all the dressings in the ward.
Advantages:
◦ This method is economical.
◦ Save time
◦ Easy to organize the work to the staff.
◦ Best utilization of staff as per individual experience and desires.
◦ Less equipment is needed

Disadvantages:
◦ Patient are not treated individuals but as bed numbers.
◦ Different person carried out patient care.
◦ Difficult to establish patient priorities
◦ Time of tasks in a logical sequence.
◦ Nurse has very brief contacts with the patients.

Team Nursing
◦ This method of work is ideal. The nursing staff is divided into teams each of which is led by an
experienced nurse. Each team undertakes the total nursing care for a group of patients allocated to it by
the ward head nurse. The leader of team organizes the nursing care for her group pf patients and makes
decisions.
◦ Co-operation of worker required to achieve goal.
◦ Advantages:
◦ This method is patients centered
◦ Care of patient is shared
◦ Work can be organized as per individual patients needs.
◦ Satisfaction among nursing staff
◦ Everyone in team is contributing in care of patient.

Disadvantages:
◦ Difficult when shortage of staff.
◦ Unstable staffing patterns make team nursing difficult.
◦ There is less individual responsibility and independence regarding
nursing functions.
◦ Disregard the needs of other patients.

The Case Method
◦ Complete care of one or more patients is given to a nurse for a specific shift or period of time.
◦ Advantages:
◦ Highly improved quality.
◦ Patients Centered approach.
◦ Continuity of care can be facilitated with ease.
◦ Better rapport can be developed b/w patient and nurse.
◦ Educational needs of the patents and their attendants can be closely monitored.

Disadvantages
◦ There are not enough nurses to fulfil the demand
◦ Not economically feasible
◦ Many patients not required intensity of care

Primary Nursing
◦ Traditional method of giving care. Total care of a patient was assigned to one nurse. All aspects of
the nursing process are directed by the primary nurse.
Advantages:
◦ Patient centered and provides personal services
◦ The nurse is in direct contact with the patient and his family, doctor and other health team
members.
◦ Provide complete nursing care over long period of time
◦ Good quality of nursing care

Disadvantage:
◦ Not economical in hospital, feasible for private duty
◦ In experienced nurse may cause harm to patient
