OBJECTIVES
Identify different data
collection techniques.
Value the importance of
knowing the data
collection techniques of
qualitative research.
LET’S PLAY THE BOAT IS
SINKING!
ACTIVITY
Each group answers the
questions using the meta strips
while watching a VIDEO. For their
answers of question number 1,
they are going to write it on a
yellow strip, blue for question
number 2, pink for question
number 3, and for number 4
white.
QUESTIONS TO ANSWER
1. What part of the video destructs
you most? Why?
2. What particular social issue can
be drawn from the video?
3. What solution could you possibly
suggest for the said social
issue?
4. How are going to collect your
data to evaluate the issue?Michael

Collection
Techniques
INTERVIEW
Respondents or research
participants talk about their
experiences, feelings
beliefs, outlooks, through
face-to-face, telephone or
focused group interviews.
PARTICIPANT OBSERVATION
Researcher
immerses
himself/herself in
the natural setting
of the respondents,
home, office,
institution, etc.
FOCUSED GROUP INTERVIEW
6 to 8 persons
participate in the
interview; critical &
sensitive issues can
be more freely &
deeply discussed.
OBSERVATIONAL EVALUATION
Researcher
observes and
records both the
verbal & non-
verbal behavior of
the participants
BIOGRAPHY / AUTOBIOGRAPHY
Offers rich source of
data or evidence
that can provide
tentative answers to
research questions
QUESTIONNAIRE - STRUCTURED
(set of questions
prepared),
unstructured (open-
ended) & semi-
structured
(combination)
QUESTIONS TO PONDER:
What is the importance of
these techniques? How do
you choose the best data
collection technique for
your present study?
(CRITICAL THINKING SKILL)
In groups, decide
which data collection
technique is more
practical in terms of
time and money,
considering that you
are still student-
researchers.
(NUMERACY SKILL)
APPLICATION
Determine the most
appropriate DATA
COLLECTION
techniques to be
used on the
following pictures:
EVALUATION
On a ¼ sheet of paper,
identify the correct
data collection
techniques being
referred to on the
following statements:
EVALUATION
1. Personal narratives
offer a rich source of
data or evidence that
can be shed light or
provide tentative
answers to research
questions.
EVALUATION
2. A method the
researcher immerses
himself/herself in the
natural setting of the
research participants.
EVALUATION
3. It consists of
6-8 persons
participate in
the interview.
EVALUATION
4. The researcher
may or may not
participate in the
activities of the
group being
observed.
EVALUATION
5. In this method, the
researcher
participants are
prodded to talk about
their experiences,
feelings, beliefs,
outlooks and etc.
