The typography by Fady El-Masry
Typography (from the Greek words τύπος (typos) = form and γραφή
(graphe) = writing) is the art and technique of arranging type in order to make
language visible. The arrangement of type involves the selection of typefaces,
point size, line length, leading (line spacing), adjusting the spaces between
groups of letters (tracking) and adjusting the space between pairs of letters
(kerning). Type design is a closely related craft, which some consider distinct
and others a part of typography; most typographers do not design typefaces,
and some type designers do not consider themselves typographers. In modern
times, typography has been put into motion — in film, television and online
broadcasts — to add emotion to mass communication.
Typography is performed by typesetters, compositors, typographers, graphic
designers, art directors, comic book artists, graffiti artists, clerical workers,
and anyone else who arranges type for a product. Until the Digital Age,
typography was a specialized occupation. Digitization opened up typography
to new generations of visual designers and lay users, and it has been said that
“typography is now something everybody does.

Layout is arguably the most fundamental and important element for designers working in any medium. Effective layout is critical to communication because it allows the end user to be drawn in by an innovative design while also easily digesting information.
Making and Breaking the Grid is a comprehensive layout design workshop that assumes that in order to effectively break grid-based design rules, one must first understand those rules and see how they apply to real-world projects.

Book Formatting: Quality Control Checks for DesignersConfidence Ago
This presentation was made to help designers who work in publishing houses or format books for printing ensure quality.
Quality control is vital to every industry. This is why every department in a company need create a method they use in ensuring quality. This, perhaps, will not only improve the quality of products and bring errors to the barest minimum, but take it to a near perfect finish.
It is beyond a moot point that a good book will somewhat be judged by its cover, but the content of the book remains king. No matter how beautiful the cover, if the quality of writing or presentation is off, that will be a reason for readers not to come back to the book or recommend it.
So, this presentation points designers to some important things that may be missed by an editor that they could eventually discover and call the attention of the editor.

7. Roman inscriptional capitals on the base of Trojan's Column, ca 113.
Sample of Carolingian writing from the Carolingian Gospel Book produced between 820 and 830 AD
8. Invention and technology of movable type in the 1430s
The systems involved were first assembled in Germany by the goldsmith Johann Gutenberg.
11. Modern 1880-1960
Bauhaus -- the radically simplified forms, the rationality and functionality, and the idea that mass-production was reconcilable with the individual artistic spirit -- were already partly developed
in Germany before the Bauhaus was founded.
20. Palatino
Old Style
Old style fonts have the following characteristics:
* Based on pen drawn forms
* Little contrast between thick and thin strokes
* Bracketed serifs
* Small x-heights
* Counters with a diagonal stress
Garamond was introduced in 1541, and is known as the first Old Style Roman. It remained popular for hundreds of years. Caslon was introduced in 1734. Caslon was used in the first
printings of the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution.
Old Style typefaces were designed to imitate handwriting. They are good book types, being highly legible
Example fonts: Bembo, Palatino, Trajan, Garamond, Caslon
21. Times
Transitional
The transitional typefaces bridged the Old Style and Modern periods, and took design elements from both styles. Transitional typefaces have the following characteristics:
* Greater contrast between thick and thin strokes
* More vertical counters
* Very sharp serifs
Baskerville introduced the transitional typefaces in 1757.
Transitional typefaces are often used in text-heavy designs.
Examples: Baskerville, Caslon, Times
22. Bodoni
Modern
Modern typefaces are distinctive: they employ strong vertical elements and very fine hairlines for a very contrasty look.
* Strong vertical elements
* Contrast between thick and thin strokes
* Very fine hairlines
Modern roman typefaces were introduced in the 1780s.
Modern typefaces are well suited to headings and title pages.
Examples: Bodoni, New Century Schoolbook
23. Courier
Slab Serif
Slab serif typefaces use heavy, squared off finishing strokes — hence the name quot;slabquot; serif. They have the following characteristics:
* Heavy, square serifs
* Few or no thin strokes
* Few or no delicate curves
* Lack contrast
All of this makes slab serif typefaces ideal for low quality printing: faxes and newsprint. They also read well on screen, and look good in presentations.
Examples: Clarendon, Courier, Memphis, Rockwell
24. Helvetica
Sans Serif
Ironically, it was William Caslon IV (great-grandson of the quot;originalquot; Caslon, who produced the first type without serifs in 1816. Sans serifs were not embraced at first, and in fact, in Great Britain the common term for them is still
Grotesque.
It is hotly debated whether or not sans serif is suitable for text. Most will say that it isn't, because it's the serif that leads the eye and makes type readable. Others will argue that sans serif type, when properly set, is perfectly
suited to text.
Examples: Franklin Gothic, Univers, Helvetica, Futura, Frutiger
34. We read words not letters
