Elon Musk Completes $44 Billion Deal to Own Twitter
The world’s richest man closed his blockbuster purchase of the social media service, thrusting Twitter into a new era.
After months of waffling, lawsuits, verbal mudslinging and the near miss of a full blown trial, Elon Musk now owns Twitter.
On Thursday night, Mr. Musk closed his $44 billion deal to buy the social media service, said three people with knowledge of the situation. He also began cleaning house, with at least four top Twitter executives — including the chief executive and chief financial officer — getting fired on Thursday. Mr. Musk had arrived at Twitter’s San Francisco headquarters on Wednesday and met with engineers and ad executives.
The closing of the deal, which followed months of drama and legal challenges as Mr. Musk changed his mind about buying the company, sets Twitter on an uncertain course. Mr. Musk, a self-described “free speech absolutist,” has said that he wants to make the social media platform a more freewheeling place for all types of commentary and that he would “reverse the permanent ban” of former President Donald J. Trump from the service.
Mr. Musk’s open approach to speech on Twitter could exacerbate long simmering issues of toxic content and misinformation, affecting political debates around the world. Early tests will come within days, when Brazil elects its president and American voters go to the polls on Nov. 8 for the midterm elections. Twitter said it would prohibit misleading claims about voting and the outcome of elections, but that was before Mr. Musk owned it.

increased, a decline has been observed in recent years (Statista, 2022a). In addition, over the
years all social media platforms - including Twitter - have been targeted by governments
regarding the wide-spread availability of false information, conspiracy theories, and hate speech.
Big social media companies like Meta and Twitter have been pressured to hire large numbers of
moderators to screen and delete inappropriate content. Besides the pressure, there was an
additional incentive to take action, as failure to do so would have led to other companies
reducing their advertising spending, for fear of being associated with the negative content (Bove,

monetizable accounts (Figure One). However, the moderation attempts (that also included the
ban of former US President Donald J. Trump) have not been appreciated by all. Moderation
efforts have been criticized by some prominent figures, among them Elon Musk (Malik, 2022).
Consequently, Musk pushed for the acquisition of Twitter. Musk announced his intention to buy
the company for USD 44 billion in April 2022, but the board initially turned down his offer.
Twitter adopted a poison pill approach to prevent Musk from taking over the company and even
proposed to make him a board member (Brown, 2022). However, Musk insisted on buying the
company at USD 54.20 per share. Board members stated that it was their responsibility to look
out for the best interests of Twitter's shareholders and agreed to sell the company to Musk.

Initially, Threads, the app launched by Meta (formerly Facebook), showed great promise, gaining an overwhelming number of sign-ups with 5 million registrations within hours of its July 5 launch and surpassing 100 million within a week. It appeared that Threads could potentially outshine Twitter.
However, as time went on, Threads faced a significant decrease in daily active users, dropping from 49 million on July 7 to just 12 million on July 22, according to Similarweb, a trusted digital intelligence platform. Unfortunately, even on its busiest day, Threads couldn’t compete with Twitter’s massive user base, which consistently boasts over 100 million active daily users.

The document discusses different ways that news organizations and journalists use Twitter and the varying levels of success and return on investment. It notes that while highly interactive journalists like David Pogue can gain many followers, most journalists and news organizations struggle. Automated Twitter feeds that just share headlines have limited value but can still attract followers, while more curated and interactive approaches may have better engagement. It concludes that a mixed approach including both automated and human-curated feeds may be best for news organizations on Twitter.
Twitter grew popular by allowing easy sharing of short status updates, or "tweets", through text messages. This let users share what they were doing in real-time from anywhere. As more prominent accounts like news stations, celebrities, and politicians joined, they contributed valuable content that attracted more regular users. Twitter now draws the most followers to celebrities, news outlets, large companies promoting products, and government officials who provide interesting, relevant information to users. To increase revenues, Twitter should diversify beyond ads, develop new products and services users may pay for, and capture more of the social media advertising market with improved ad offerings.
Elon Musk has announced that Twitter will begin charging $8 per month for user accounts with blue verification ticks. The new fee is part of Musk's plan to reduce Twitter's reliance on advertising revenue and limit spam accounts. Some companies have paused advertising on Twitter until it's clear how Musk will manage the platform. In response to criticism over the new fee, Musk said "we need to pay the bills somehow". It remains to be seen how Musk's unexpected strategies will impact Twitter going forward.
This document presents information about Twitter Inc. in 2018. It discusses Twitter's history, starting as a podcast company called Odeo that transitioned to Twitter when it was launched in 2006. It provides an overview of Twitter as a social media company that generates revenue from advertisements and data sales. It also shows Twitter's financial performance from 2014 to 2018, with revenue growing each year. The document addresses Twitter's competitors and asks questions about topics like its financial position and how it compares to Facebook and Snap.
Jack Dorsey is an American programmer and businessman who co-founded Twitter in 2006. He wrote the first tweet and served as Twitter's first CEO. While at Twitter, he helped grow it from a niche messaging platform to an influential platform used by politicians, celebrities, and during global events like the Iranian elections. However, Dorsey stepped down as Twitter CEO to focus on his new company Square, which allows people to accept credit card payments through mobile devices.

This document discusses how Twitter can be used as a tool for branding, employee communication, and customer service. It provides examples of how companies like Starbucks, JetBlue, and Comcast have successfully used Twitter for branding awareness, responding to customer issues, and improving their public image. The key aspects that make Twitter useful are its ability to spread information quickly in short snippets, foster interaction between users, and engage customers in an open online discussion.
Twitter was founded in 2005 and launched in 2006. It allows users to post and interact with short messages called tweets. While registered users can both post and read tweets, unregistered users can only read them. Twitter grew in popularity through events like SXSW where live tweets were displayed, and through celebrity users. It has impacted global news and events through hashtags that organize discussion. However, Twitter faces challenges to grow beyond its initial user base and find a sustainable revenue model as it expands globally and competes with other messaging platforms. It continues working to capitalize on users' interests through products like Periscope and improve access in emerging markets.

casted a ballot starting at Tuesday evening.
4. Musk additionally tweeted that he is
anticipating making critical enhancements
to Twitter before very long!
Twitter's VP of customer item, Jay Sullivan,
tweeted Tuesday that an alter work has for
a really long time been Twitter's most
mentioned new element, noticing that
individuals need to fix missteps, mistakes,
and quick reactions.
Previous Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey had said
that Twitter had considered an alter button,
yet in a January 2020 Q&A kept up with
that we'll likely never get it done.
He noticed that Twitter's present
arrangement keeps the soul of its instant
message starting points - messages can't be
altered - and the disarray that could result
from clients making changes to a tweet that
5. has proactively been intensely flowed by
others. Dorsey ventured down as CEO in
November 2021.
Individuals who study Twitter additionally
say adding an alter button would probably
change the idea of Twitter, making it less
significant as a verifiable distribution center
that stores official proclamations by
legislators and other high-profile
individuals.
Twitter, no matter what, has turned into the
accepted news wire, said Jennifer Grygiel, a
Syracuse University interchanges teacher
and a specialist via virtual entertainment
who investigates misleading publicity.
Tweets are many times installed in reports,
which could create issues assuming the
clients alter significant or dubious tweets
6. without leaving proof of the first assertion.
Grygiel proposed rather giving Twitter
clients a window of time to alter their tweets
before they distribute them.
Letting strong Twitter clients alter their
tweets implies they wouldn't be chronicled
articulations any longer, Grygiel said. We
want to contemplate what the ramifications
are, what these tweets are, who has power.
The organization recognized those concerns
Tuesday evening when Sullivan tweeted:
Without things like time cutoff points,
controls, and straightforwardness about
what has been altered, Edit could be
abused to modify the record of the public
discussion. Safeguarding the honesty of that
public discussion is our first concern when
we approach this work.
7. Musk, as well, had said that a proposition
for a post-distribution alter window of a
couple of moments sounds sensible.
Musk is somebody who could apparently
utilize an alter button. His tweet about
taking Tesla private at $420 per share,
while financing was not gotten, prompted a
$40 million SEC settlement and a
prerequisite that Musk's tweets be endorsed
by a corporate attorney. Musk is as yet
involved in a battle about that settlement.
Twitter had before appeared to be adopting
a facetious strategy to Musk's survey.
Twitter's CEO, Parag Agrawal, retweeted the
survey with an appearing reference to a
previous tweet by Musk, saying The
outcomes of this survey will be significant. If
it's not too much trouble, vote cautiously.
Musk had involved a similar language in a
8. March tweet portraying one more of his
surveys that found out if Twitter sticks to free
discourse standards.
