And So They Marched!
This is the first part of the Gilbane 2012 Website Migration Workshop that concentrates on the strategy and planning. Dean Barker delivered the second half that deals with the nuts and bolts of migrating content: http://www.slideshare.net/blendinteractive/content-migrations-getting-from-a-to-b .
Presentation by John Yesko at the 2011 Information Architecture Summit (IA Summit) entitled: "The User Experience Brief: The What and Why Before the How."
We IAs spend a lot of time discussing the “core” documents in information architecture—wireframes, site maps, prototypes. But we often jump into these very tactical, design-oriented deliverables too hastily.
The user experience brief takes on a more strategic role. Early in the project, it’s our vehicle to summarize what we know so far, particularly requirements and research results. More importantly though, it lays the foundation for the UX design approach, with the goals of gathering consensus and identifying sticking points early on. The user experience brief illuminates the organizing principles—user experience fundamentals to be followed and referenced throughout the project.
We’ll talk about the value of this early-project document, its role in shaping the user experience approach, how its composed, and its limitations. We’ll look at a number of great visual examples too. Introduced the right way and at the right time, the UX brief can be an invaluable stake in the ground with clients and internal stakeholders.
Are you about to start work on a new Web project? Have you planned the project accurately and completely? Thorough planning can avoid so many issues later in the project, but yet it is often ignored or done hastily. In this white paper you'll get a detailed look at the planning process that CommonPlaces employs. With documents such as site maps, site wireframes, content type descriptions, and technology assessments, you can give your project a much higher chance of success.
10 Worst Mistakes in SharePoint BrandingMarcy Kellar
Earlier this year I wrote a blog on the Top 10 Mistakes in SharePoint 2010 Branding and UI Design (http://bit.ly/ITzlJl) and had such an overwhelming response that I wanted to present it to the community. I brought in a front end developer (Tom Daly) and a Developer (Mike Mukalian) to help me convey the different perpsectives that each of our roles takes. My original list of mistakes changed a bit when we brainstormed on overall cost and commonality of branding messes. I still stand by my original listing in the blog but by adding different roles in the mix, we were able to provide a depth of experience to support these 10 costly and common mistakes in SharePoint Branding and UI Development.
This presentation was created as part of internal conference at Clarice Technologies. It talks about the need to revise our design workflow in order to realise the true potential of responsive design. Several case-studies are presented to show alternative workflows that people have tried.

WTF: Where To Focus when you take over a Drupal projectSymetris
Jumping into pre-built Drupal projects sometimes requires a leap of faith as much for clients as for developers. The client is usually coming out of a bad previous business relationship and the code is not always structured according to your standards.
During this talk, Symetris will share its experience and provide tips on how to navigate these often uncharted waters. Our goal is to help you convert an uncertain client into a long term partner and have a checklist of what to look out for as developers.

About 75% of the Marketing professionals we speak to are somewhat to extremely dissatisfied with their websites, but feel stuck due to the traditional high cost associated with implementing or migrating to a WCM. With LiveFirst, Percussion set out on the quest to remove this barrier.
The biggest challenge of moving to a new CMS is that you are forced to rebuild your site from scratch. Even if there are things you are happy with in your current website, such as your calls to action, or things that you’d prefer to leave alone, such as your old press releases, changing your CMS means needing to handle these as part of a new WCM implementation. With LiveFirst you don’t have to start over.

In a world where agility has become a requirement, business and engineering demands have decreed the death of the “Department of No”. This talk will cover the journey of an IT Operations department from a single DevOps team to a business-wide cultural shift that has affected the way people interact and work with each other.
In order to make sure that our DevOps initiative would be successful, we needed to make changes to the corporate organization, rearrange teams and roles in several areas, and make sure that everyone fully understand where we were being headed to.
All these steps will be covered in this talk that will demonstrate some common pitfalls and misconceptions that jeopardize the DevOps adoption, particularly in large enterprises with several compliancy requirements and some outdated bureaucracy.
Trying to get clients or stakeholders to see the need for accessibility is hard, people still see it as alot of extra work with rewards that are hard to provide a ROI. However web spiders/crawlers are our biggest blind user on the web, in essence alot of what works to increase SEO will increase the accessibility of your site. Lets take a look at some site building and development tasks we can perform that provide a tick to SEO and a tick to Accessibility. If we can take this approach we can see that the cost of Accessibility is actually bundled with the cost of SEO and not an additional burden to the project.
This talk looks at the state of accessibility in Joomla and shows how accessibility is intrinsically linked to SEO performance from a development perspective. We will also look at some new tools to help check and test for accessibility throughout the development process, and how we can add these into a CI/CD approach.
Whilst this talk is aimed at all audiences it will be focused on development and management of the development process. With time permitting and depending on the audience questions/experience level there may be some tech demos utilised to help illustrate concepts.

Overselling Agile Certifications and Frameworks : Presented by Sridharan VembuoGuild .
Agile is only for smaller projects and/or startup organisations - Not Anymore. Taking my own and my organisation's experience, Agile is a proven methodology that is well suited for delivering complex, distributed, multi-year enterprise programs, for many years now.
While this is really a great thing for agile enthusiasts and practitioners, it’s a bit of worrying sign for me the increased recognition and popularity the ‘Agile Certifications’ and ‘Agile Frameworks’ are receiving among individuals and organisations who would like to adopt Agile to stay relevant in current world.
Similar to Tutorial: Making Big Changes to Your Website or Intranet (20)
These were the slides used in the "Rightsizing your digital presence" workshop at Confab Intensive 2017.
Regardless of the size or complexity of an organization, its digital presence is often unnecessarily large given the organization’s scope. But rightsizing is tough. We look at how to discard unnecessary content, both from the perspective of the one-time effort (such as during a migration) and on an ongoing basis.

Many digital presences are very disjointed. We look at creating a more coherent site in two ways: on a day-to-day basis and also by more effective big changes like redesigns.

Ways of controlling content migrations. Key points:
* Migration planning fits within broader project

* Understand what you have
* Use rules rather than case-by-case examination
* View quality in grayscale
* Reduce heft
* Minimize distance

Your Site Needs Improvement! If Topics Pages Are Easy, Why Are They So Bad?David Hobbs Consulting
Your website needs to keep improving. Some things needs to be done fast and others slow, and clearly defining the difference can help you dig out of the deluge of change requests. In particular, many topic pages are low quality, and some topic page changes should happen quickly and others slowly.
First presented at Gilbane 2013, in a session moderated by Jose Castillo where Rebecca Rodgers also presented on innovative intranet homepages.
This slide deck was used as the framework for a lively workshop in Utrecht at Hartman Event 2012. Although most of the value in a tutorial is the interaction / exercises / participant examples, this deck should be useful to others considering a migration.
This presentation covers: vision, inventories, controlling quality, distance, and weight (including cutting content), and manual effort estimation.

If you have a website migration, there is more to it than moving content from point A to point B. Some of what needs to be moved isn't content, the process continues after you get to point B, and even getting the migration complete will happen in stages.

Enterprise Excellence is Inclusive Excellence.pdfKaiNexus
Enterprise excellence and inclusive excellence are closely linked, and real-world challenges have shown that both are essential to the success of any organization. To achieve enterprise excellence, organizations must focus on improving their operations and processes while creating an inclusive environment that engages everyone. In this interactive session, the facilitator will highlight commonly established business practices and how they limit our ability to engage everyone every day. More importantly, though, participants will likely gain increased awareness of what we can do differently to maximize enterprise excellence through deliberate inclusion.
What is Enterprise Excellence?
Enterprise Excellence is a holistic approach that's aimed at achieving world-class performance across all aspects of the organization.
What might I learn?
A way to engage all in creating Inclusive Excellence. Lessons from the US military and their parallels to the story of Harry Potter. How belt systems and CI teams can destroy inclusive practices. How leadership language invites people to the party. There are three things leaders can do to engage everyone every day: maximizing psychological safety to create environments where folks learn, contribute, and challenge the status quo.
Who might benefit? Anyone and everyone leading folks from the shop floor to top floor.
