The Turks attacked and captured Baghdad from the Persians in 1055 and had converted to Sunni Islam but continued warring with other Muslims. In 1071, Turkish sultans crushed the Byzantine Empire during the Battle of Manzikert. The unexpected death of Malik shah in 1092 caused the Seljuk Empire to break into minor kingdoms as no new shah emerged capable of leading the empire.
