Dear friends,
We are pleased to invite you to an Engineering workshop on Engineering Tunneling-Design,
Operations, and Safety, hosted by UOD- in Conference Building Hall, on September 05-06, 2012.
Abstract:
Tunnels are important parts of the communication system in mountainous countries like Kurdistan as
well as for development of infrastructure in urban areas. The workshop gives short descriptions of
roadway tunnels to present and discuss systematically the design and construction of Tunnels and type
of Tunnel. The use technology transfer was an essential part of the strategy bringing to the successful
development of the Underground Structure. It is important for regulators, planners, developers,
engineers and contractors to have a more comprehensive understanding the engineering of tunneling.
Planning for a road tunnel requires multi-disciplinary involvement and assessments, and should
generally adopt the same standards as for surface roads and bridge options, with some exceptions as
will be discussed later. Certain considerations, such as lighting, ventilation, life safety, operation and
maintenance, etc should be addressed specifically for tunnels. In addition to the capital construction
cost, a life cycle cost analysis should be performed taking into account the life expectancy of a tunnel.
It should be noted that the life expectancies of tunnels are significantly longer than those of other
facilities such as bridges or roads.
Underground structures
Mountain tunnels in rock conditions
Subways
Highway, railway, water and sewage tunnels in alluvial soils
Metro stations
Underground parking stations, commercial centers etc
The construction of tunnels under wide and deep waterways requires special consideration to the design
as well as to the execution.

Objective and Scope
The aim of this workshop is to uncover the facts about Design and Construction and knowledge
of Tunnel Engineering, because as you know that Kurdistan is a mountainous area need to be use
this system to ease the transportation and reduce the pollution of the environment in the region,
also it is one of the means of modern engineering in urban areas.
