We scoop up yellowfin tuna from the water using a dip net. We place small fish in a tagging cradle and large fish on a foam pad to remove hooks. If the fish is in good health, we implant an archival tag by making a small incision, inserting a sterile tag, and closing with sutures while covering the fish's eyes to keep it calm. The process takes under two minutes, then we release the fish back into the ocean. Commercial fishermen who catch tagged tuna receive $500 for returning tags, which record temperature, depth, and light levels every minute to track tuna journeys.
