PERICLES presentation on Appraisal - IDCC15 workshopPERICLES_FP7
This presentation was presented during the PERICLES workshop entitled “automated capture of the environment in a sheer curation context”, which took place at the 10th International Digital Curation Conference on the 11 Feb 2015 in London, UK.
Simon Waddington (King’s College London) provided an outline of the objectives of the recently started investigation into appraisal. As there exist a number of definitions of appraisal, such as “identifying digital objects of continuing business value”, the question of relevant appraisal criteria and their evaluation was raised, motivated by examples from the PERICLES science and media case studies.

Isaac Holeman prepared this innovation talk about FrontlineSMS:Medic for the 2009 meeting of the Scotland Malawi Partnership in Edinburgh.
About Isaac:
Isaac Holeman recently graduated from Lewis & Clark College in Portland Oregon, where he researched ribosome biogenesis in the laboratory yeast S. cerevisiae. His passions include medicine, informatics, anthropology, global health, blogging at isaacholeman.org, and practicing the Christian faith. Eventually he hopes to attend medical school. In this presentation, I highlighted the significance of adopting development methods for the successful development of IoT-based systems. By adopting systematic development methods, we can ensure that IoT systems are built with a structured approach, minimizing risks and enhancing overall reliability. I discussed the benefits of utilizing development methods, such as improved project management, streamlined development processes, and the ability to consistently deliver high-quality IoT solutions.
Extreme Citizen Science technologies: attempting to embed values in codeMuki Haklay
Extreme Citizen Science (ExCiteS) is a situated, bottom-up practice that takes into account local needs, practices and culture and works with broad networks of people to design and build new devices and knowledge creation processes that can transform the world. The ExCiteS group at UCL was set up to support the implementation of this concept through the development of theories, methodologies, processes, and technologies that allow any community, regardless of (technical) literacy, to engage in citizen science projects that produce results that are meaningful and useful for them. Stemming from theoretical foundations in participatory action research and public participation geographic information systems (PPGIS), our technologies are designed to carry values with them. Once we visit these values, we can see how they turn into code, and ask how successful these efforts are, using cases in the Amazon, Congo-basin, Namibia, UK, and Malta.

At present, the state-of-the-art supplies for conducting a face-to-face design thinking workshop typically consists of self-stick notes and stickers, markers, and whiteboards. However, this analog way of working is incongruent with the realities of global software companies, where most products and services are developed by distributed teams. This paper explores the process of facilitating remote design thinking workshops, using information technology and communication tools. The paper is based on a participatory action research undertaken by the author as a part of the doctoral thesis - ‘a study on an approach to prepare the organization mindset to build design-led innovation culture to become a customer-centric and future driven software company’ in the Indian IT sector. The participating company realized the innovation breakthroughs using design thinking can happen only when their organization can collaborate across disciplines, silos, time zones; and were looking for a solution to scale design thinking in their organization. The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Synthetic Fiber Construction in lab .pptxPavel ( NSTU)
Synthetic fiber production is a fascinating and complex field that blends chemistry, engineering, and environmental science. By understanding these aspects, students can gain a comprehensive view of synthetic fiber production, its impact on society and the environment, and the potential for future innovations. Synthetic fibers play a crucial role in modern society, impacting various aspects of daily life, industry, and the environment. ynthetic fibers are integral to modern life, offering a range of benefits from cost-effectiveness and versatility to innovative applications and performance characteristics. While they pose environmental challenges, ongoing research and development aim to create more sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives. Understanding the importance of synthetic fibers helps in appreciating their role in the economy, industry, and daily life, while also emphasizing the need for sustainable practices and innovation.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

ARNOVA presentation 2013
1. Assessing ICT Adoption Decisions of
Kenyan Nonprofit Organizations
Melissa Tully, PhD
University of Iowa
2013 ARNOVA Conference
Hartford, CT
melissa-tully@uiowa.edu
2. Situating this study
• Part of larger (dissertation) project
• 11 months of fieldwork over four visits to Kenya
between December 2008 and January 2011
• RQ: what factors influence ICT adoption decisions
among small- and medium-sized civil society
organizations?
3. Research Framework
• Diffusion of innovations (DOI) theory – used
across disciplines; popular in communications
research (Rogers, 2003)
• Technology acceptance model – used in IS
research (Davis, 1989; Venkatesh & Davis, 2000)
• Design-reality gaps – concept developed and
applied to ICT for development (Heeks, 2002, 2009)
• Current research uses concepts from all three
4.
5. Current Study
• How do the different factors affect adoption
decisions of the Ushahidi platform?
• Ushahidi platform – open-source software for data
aggregation and visualization (mapping)
6. Methods
• Data collected over time (2008–2011) using
multiple qualitative methods:
– Participant observation
– Workshops and focus groups
– Interviews
– Surveys of employees
– Document analysis
7. Nairobi, Kenya
• Organizations in this study
are based in Nairobi
• Growing tech sector
– Fiber optic cable; mobile;
government investment
• Huge NGO sector
– Hub for East Africa (Taylor, 2004)
Tech hub + NGO hub = lots of ICT for social change initiatives
8. A Few Key Findings
• Individuals with technical and sector expertise are
best suited to develop ICT projects and make
good adoption decisions
– Rejecting an innovation can be the best decision
– Ability to adapt the software to fit needs (closing the
design-reality gap)
• When the decision to adopt a new technology is
top-down, it is less likely to be accepted, often
leading to project failure (supported by DOI).
9. A Few Key Findings
• “Trialability” and “visibility” as key factors in
adoption decisions
– Previous DOI research have found these to be less
predictive
– Follow-up study will more systematically measure the
impact of these factors
• “Complexity” often miscalculated
– Potential adopters focused on technical complexity,
instead of on the complexity of implementation and
project management
10. Discussion
• Usefulness of comparative case studies and
looking at “negative” cases
• Intersection of factors (no simple predictor)
• Miscalculations about digital/social media in NP
sector
• Misalignment between expectations, goals, and
outcomes
