Aphids: Aphis craccivora (Hemiptera: Aphididae) Symptom of damage • Nymphs and adults colonize on growing spikes at base of buds and suck the sap • Damaged buds and flowers fall off • Affected spikes look withered and droop • Black sooty mould develops on the buds in case of heavy infestation Identification of the pest • Adult - tiny insects, soft bodied, deep purple or black in colour.
- 4. 3. Grasshoppers: Atractomorpha crenulata (Orthoptera: Acrididae) Symptom of damage • Feed on young leaves and flower buds. • Affected plants with damaged foliage and flowers lose their elegance. Management • Deep ploughing of soil exposes egg masses to natural enemies. • Or soil solarization. • Netting - prevents damage from hoppers to nurseries. • Spraying of chlorpyriphos/quinalphos @2ml/L to protects the foliage.

Red Spider Mites: Tetranychus urticae (Acarina: Tetranychidae) Symptoms of damage • Mites thrive well under hot and dry conditions, usually on the undersides of the leaves. • It webs the leaves. • Mites suck the sap, resulting in the formation of yellow stripes and streaks on the foliage. • Affected leaves become yellow, silvery or bronze and distorted. Identification of the pest • Adult - red or brown in colour Management • Spray miticide like dicofol @ 3 – 5ml/L or spiromesifen @ 0.6 to 0.8ml/L or propargite @ 1ml/L followed by a spray of pongamia oil @1% is recommended for effective control.

Ash Weevils: Myllocerus spp. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) Symptoms of damage • Weevils - nocturnal in habit • Ash coloured adult weevils feed from the edges of the leaves, producing a notched effect (characteristic holes) • Grubs feed on roots and tunnel into the bulbs causing wilting . Identification • Full grown grubs pupate in earthen cells below the ground level Management • Neem oil @2% effcetive. • Soil drenching with chlorpyriphos @ 5ml/L.

Thrips, Thrips spp (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) Nature of damage • Both nymphs and adult cause damage by sucking sap from leaves and growing buds • Resulting in browning and distortion of damaged leaves • Damaged leaves become brittle and develop brown streaks • Affected buds get distorted in shape and dry up • Plant growth is retarded and do not produce flower spikes • The pest is also associated with transmission of bunchy top disease in which inflorescence gets malformed.
- 9. Management: • Set up blue sticky trap. • The pest can be controlled by need based spraying of crop with pymetrozine 50 WG @ 0.6g/L or flonicamid 50 WG @ 0.3g/L.
- 10. 7. Rodents Symptoms of damage • Rodents do considerable damage to tuberose plants in the field by making burrows. Management • Poison bait is helpful in checking rodent menace in the field. • Commercial bait - 'Roban' is available in the market and the same may be used effectively.
