A tsunami is caused by a sudden displacement of large quantities of water, often due to earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, or landslides under the sea. Tsunamis consist of many waves that can last for minutes or hours, with waves reaching heights of 10 meters that travel very quickly and destroy everything in their path. While tsunamis are not dangerous in deep water, they have devastating effects when reaching the coast, where the water level first retreats before a powerful wave hits. Everyone in a coastal area should immediately run inland and to high ground to try and escape a tsunami.

2. The tsunami is a marine phenomenon
created by the sudden displacement of
large quantities of water from an ocean,
a sea, a lake or a fjord.
3. The waves of tsunami are not like a
normal wave. It is like a spreaded tidal. It is
usually called “ tidal waves “. A tsunami
consists of many waves that they last for a
few minutes or even long hours. Tsunami
are huge waves of ten meters which travel
with high speed and can destroy
everything in their path.
4. The initial rapid displacement of water
may cause the birth of a tsunami . The
result of the earthquake, mostly
underwater, causes sharp reduction of
the seabed. A volcanic eruption or a
submarine landslide or a falling
celestial body of sufficient size to the sea
may cause tsunami as well.
5. While in deep water the tsunami due to
these characteristics is not a serious risk ,
reaching the coast has particularly
devastating consequences. Before a
powerful tsunami hits the sea level the
water retreats from the coast, giving the
impression that all the sea has gone
backwards.
6. Everyone should run towards the
interior of the land away from the coast
without stopping any second and try to
remove from the coastal areas staying
on a hill several metres above the
surface of the sea .
