Please Support The Chase After a Cure for Childhood CancerGoing Places, Inc
Chase After a Cure (CAAC) was started in 2009 by Summerville, S.C., resident Whitney Ringler and her family after her son, Chase, was given a 30 percent chance of survival after being diagnosed with Stage 4 neuroblastoma, a cancer of the nerve tissue of the sympathetic nervous system. Chase survived this aggressive form of cancer and now his family works tirelessly on behalf of childhood cancer research.
CAAC raises awareness about childhood cancer, specifically neuroblastoma, and funds childhood cancer research at the Medical University of South Carolina Children’s Hospital.
Cancer is the No. 1 cause of disease-related death among children. About 13,500 children between birth and age 19 are diagnosed with cancer each year. Just at the Medical University of South Carolina, about 70 children are diagnosed with pediatric cancer annually.
Compared to adult cancer, childhood cancers are rare. Even though childhood cancer incidence rates continue to increase slightly each year, they still represent less than 1 percent of all new cancer diagnoses. That means funding for childhood cancer research is limited. In particular, neuroblastoma – which has one of the lowest survival rates – receives very little attention because the population base with this form of cancer isn’t profitable enough for pharmaceutical companies to develop new treatments.
While childhood cancer may impact a smaller population, it impacts the young lives of those diagnosed at 100 percent. Please help support Chase After a Cure. www.chaseafteracure.com/donate

South Nassau Launches ‘Truth in Medicine’ Ad Campaign To Help Health Care
Consumers Decipher Fact from Fiction
Oceanside, NY – Does dyeing your hair increase your risk of cancer? Does a heart attack feel like an
elephant is sitting on your chest? Will you be less active after joint replacement surgery? Is having a leaky
bladder during exercise normal? Do older adults need less sleep?
The answers to those questions, which are posed in a new, multi-faceted South Nassau Communities
Hospital advertising campaign called ‘Truth in Medicine’, can be found at wherequalitymatters.org. In addition
to addressing those specific questions, the site also provides consumers with guidance about where to turn for
information and medical care.
The new ‘Truth in Medicine’ ad campaign includes a full complement of strategically placed cable
television and print ads in Newsday, the Herald Community Newspapers and select Anton newspapers as well
as other local newspapers serving the area. The unconventional ads feature provocative full page photos – such
as a woman who has died her hair green – and poses a question relevant to the photo. Consumers are then urged
to go to the hospital’s ‘wherequalitymatters.org’ webpage to view a short video featuring a South Nassau
physician – an expert in that area - who provides the answer.
The physician experts featured in the videos are (click on the questions to view their answers):
• Rajiv Datta, MD, FACS, FRCS, FICS, chair of the department of surgery and medical director of the
Gertrude & Louis Feil Cancer Center, Does dyeing your hair increase your risk of cancer?
• Jason Freeman, MD, director of interventional cardiology, Does a heart attack feel like an elephant is
sitting on your chest?
• Alan Garely, chair of obstetrics and gynecology and director of urogynecology, Is having a leaky
bladder during exercise normal?
• Bradley Gerber, MD, chief of joint replacement surgery, Will you be less active after joint replacement
surgery?
• Rupinder P. Kaur, D.O., geriatric medicine, Do older adults need less sleep?
