“We got involved with the CIBC Run for the Cure
in 2007 when several of our colleagues were
touched by breast cancer and started a team.
The entire hotel rallied behind them. We’ll always
remember waiting in the pouring rain to accept
our 2011 Corporate Challenge award – the
positive energy, support and spirit broke through
the miserable weather and reminded us of the
important reason we were there.”
– Ashley Tompkins, Customer Service Manager, The Fairmont Royal York

T
he Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, founded
in 1986, is Canada’s leading community-driven breast
cancer charity dedicated to funding relevant and
innovative research and supporting and advocating for the
breast cancer community. CBCF is the largest funder of breast
cancer research in Canada and we are changing the landscape
of what is known about prevention, detection, diagnosis and
treatment, helping to reduce mortality rates and improve the
quality of life for women living with breast cancer.
How to get involved?
Visit www.runforthecure.com to register your team. Be
sure to set up your Team’s Personal Fundraising Page via
the Participant Centre, which you will have access to upon
registration. Use your Participant Centre for tips and tools to
help kick-start your fundraising.
You may be able to double your donation! Across Canada
a variety of employers are looking to support the Canadian
Breast Cancer Foundation and are able to match their
employees’ fundraising efforts and donations. Corporate
giving can include corporate donations, matching gifts,
fundraising and donations for volunteering. To find out
if and how your employer matches your volunteer hours,
fundraising efforts, or donations to charitable causes, speak
to your human resources department.
Impact of your Fundraising Dollars
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in Canadian
women over the age of 20. It is a complex disease that
requires an evidence-based approach and multi-faceted
research that investigates how to reduce the incidence of
breast cancer, how to improve the quality of life for those
living with the disease and how to reduce mortality so that
more women survive the disease.
CBCF’s investments in innovative and relevant research and
education have led to progress in breast cancer prevention,
diagnosis, treatment and care.
Examples of our investments include:
Dr. Wendy Parulekar is part of an international trial test-
ing whether a diabetes drug can help reduce breast cancer
recurrences.
Dr. Jean-Phillipe Pignol discovered a better form of radiation
therapy, which can be done in a one-time, one-hour pro-
cedure rather that five weeks of daily treatment, improving
patients’ quality of life.
Dr. Karen Fergus received a Foundation Fellowship and
went on to receive a research grant to help young couples
cope with the challenges of a breast cancer diagnosis.

The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation
CIBC Run for the Cure is Canada’s largest
single day, volunteer-led fundraising event
dedicated to raising funds for breast cancer
research, education and awareness programs.
It was founded by a small group of volunteers
who wanted to raise awareness and funds
for the breast cancer cause. The CIBC Run
for the Cure has made great strides since
then, while staying true to grassroots and
our volunteer founders’ vision.
