Kenya is the third largest tea producer globally but farmers are poorly paid. TrueTea is a proposed mobile and web system to address problems like lost receipts, lack of farming advice, and high costs. It would send SMS confirmations to farmers after tea submission and collection, generate monthly reports, and allow farmers to access production records online or via USSD to potentially get loans. The system aims to increase transparency, motivate farmers, and improve living standards in the tea industry and potentially other agricultural sectors in Kenya.

1. Problem Definition
• Tea is among the leading foreign exchange earner for Kenya
today.
• Kenya is the third largest tea producer in the world after
China and India. Ironically, Kenyan tea growers are poorly
paid for their effort regardless of the returns gained from
outside.

2. •Despite the measures being adopted and
implemented to eliminate fraud by KTDA through
introduction of automatic weighing balance that post
data to a PDA that later is used to upload data to the
servers, these measures may not fully address the
agonizing problems that relate tea growing.


7. • TrueTea is a system that provides solutions to the above
mentioned problems through the use current technology. It
takes advantage of mobile technology where farmers can
receive an sms confirmation upon submission of their tea to
the collection centers.
• The system also can be implemented on a web platform
where those growers with internet skills can access their
accounts created for them by the KTDA Ltd. after registration
as a grower.

9. • The system is also out to reach those with phones that
cannot support GPRS data. It can support a USSD support
platform where farmers can request for automatic electronic
receipt of their cumulative tea weighed.

and cumulative weight updated on the server.

• Generate yearly reports, graphs which the farmer can present to a
bank for proof of eligibility for a loan if need be.
