Triple Bottom Line of McDonald’s: How Great Is It?Preethi Umashanker and Katie Abbott
Triple Bottom LinesTriple Bottom Lines are a reporting system that businesses use (not anymore) that gives a sense of how your business is doing in 3 ways:
EnvironmentallyIs your company helping the environment? Is your company sustainable?EconomicallyCan your company work sustainably and make a profit?SociallyAre you affecting society in a good way?
Environmental Impact-Not such a good impact-Cattle are fed corn (naturally are grass eaters)-Uses Styrofoam (Plastic 6: polystyrene) packaging-Doesn’t recycle everything that can be recycled
Economic ImpactMade a profit past 3 years2009: 9% increaseDoes McDonald’s work sustainably?
Social ImpactHow does McDonald’s impact its consumers?Nutritional Value: Not Very HighMcDonald’s continues to sell unhealthy food and the people are paying the priceAmerican people are facing one of their biggest problems: OBESITY!!!
Environmental SolutionsCattle should be fed grass and should be allowed to grazeInstead of Styrofoam (Plastic 6), there are bioplastics (derived from plant starches and oils) that biodegrade that can be used for packagingMany waste materials that aren’t being recycled can be recycled
Economical SolutionsNot very many solutionsMcDonald’s is doing pretty well in its profits and losses but if they tried harder to be more sustainable their budget might increase and it might be harder to make a profit
Social SolutionsHealthier Options:Salads with oil and vinegar based dressingGrilled chicken (rather than fried)Whole wheat buns/breadEtc.Have Nutrition Facts presentPeople can know what they are eating; if they knew, they might not want to eat it
