The parasite is transmitted via the bite of an infected female Anopheles mosquito and infects the liver, then destroys red blood cells. Early symptoms include fever, chills, and fatigue, while later symptoms can include seizures, coma and organ failure if untreated. Treatment depends on severity, ranging from oral medications for uncomplicated cases to intravenous medications and supportive care for severe cases. Prevention focuses on mosquito avoidance, insecticides and antimalarial drugs.

Resonance Manifestations is a work for whispering choir by Lindsay Vickery. It uses a text collage from webpages about the transit of Venus set to a scrolling electronic score. The six voice parts are indicated by color and relative pitch and loudness. Like Cage's Aria, it draws on the spatial qualities of the choir situated around the audience. A 2013 performance can be viewed online. Vickery is an active composer across different genres and styles who explores relationships between notation, electronics, composition and improvisation.

The Foundation for Lee County Public Schools is a non-profit organization established in 1986 to enhance the quality of public education in Lee County, Florida.
