MDM Adoption Remains Modest, Basic
Introduction
Most mobile device management (MDM) platforms contain dozens, if not hundreds, of features and capabilities to help
organizations manage their mobile estates. Too often, though, the enterprise telecom management department
overlooks many of these functions amid daily work demands. Yet taking the time to study areas of potential oversight
should pay off by generating more efficiencies, staff productivity and overall value to the business. This report will help
the industry gauge the maturity of enterprise adoption of MDM features and functionality. It further will educate
vendors about which areas they must help enterprises exploit.
How Enterprises are Using MDM
Despite its high-profile nature and obvious benefits, adoption of MDM software among enterprises remains modest,
and basic, as AOTMP Research learned in Fall 2017 through interviews, questionnaires, existing data and analyst
expertise. A full quarter of 272 enterprise respondents who had not yet launched MDM software told AOTMP
Research they planned to do so. And most enterprises responding to AOTMP Research inquiries in September and
October 2017 said their MDM adoption remains rudimentary, focused mainly on security protections. That squares
with AOTMP Research findings. From most to least, here are the MDM features and capabilities enterprises employ:
Enterprises seem to understand that they must do more with their MDM platforms. A number of respondents
indicated they do intend to use additional aspects of the software over the next 12-24 months.

Enterprises have a challenging road ahead as they seek to protect their mobile devices, assets and networks. Vendors
can, and should, help. This Analyst Perspective Report from AOTMP’s Enterprise Mobility Management Research
Practice offers guidance and insight for both parties.
Organizations’
reliance on MDM software runs the gamut,
to say the least. The range varies from non-
existent to advanced, as AOTMP analysts
discovered during interviews.
In several cases, enterprises – private and
government – have not implemented device
protection and monitoring at all. One
manufacturing company said that’s because
it remains too small to justify paying for
MDM software. In a separate instance, a city
said it had a big-name MDM platform and
found it wanting, so the deployment ended
in 2016. “We have yet to see value…based
on our past experiences,” the respondent
said. That city looks to Apple for app
updates.
Somewhere between non-existent and
advanced lies the organizations familiar with
and accustomed to mobility, yet new to
MDM software. One county represents this
level of adoption. “We always had
corporate-issued devices but smartphones
changed the game,” said the county’s
telecom administrator. With MDM
software, that entity now pushes out
deeper policies for applications and content
management to ensure protections that
were not previously present. However, the
software does not work with the county’s
other business platforms such as HR,
procurement, finance, and so on. A senior
living facility sits a bit higher up the MDM
software adoption ladder. This company
employs DEP and Knox with its MDM
solution, and is testing approaches for
overseeing and managing content. But like
the county above, its MDM software is “not
at all” integrated with other systems, the
respondent said.
Next, a major hospital said it does not
combine managed mobility services with its
MDM software because of high cost and
slow service. However, the hospital does
require its MDM on every device and only
approves certain apps if that MDM software
is installed. The MDM platform integrates
completely with the hospital’s other
business systems, the respondent said.
As a final example, another government
agency, this one at the federal level,
operates MDM software alongside managed
mobility services. This helps it run security
tests, and monitor applications before
installing and managing them.
