Bootstrapping Language Associated with Biomedical Entities - TREC 2007 Genomics Talk - Edgar Meij (Univ. of Amsterdam)

Observing various learning goals from peers allows learners to specify new objectives and sub-goals to improve their personal experience. Setting goals for learning enhances motivation and performance. However an unrelated goal might lead to poor outcome. Hence learners have divergent objectives for a same learning experience. Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) is a model considering documents as a mixture of topics. This study then proposed a recommendation model based on LDA, able to determine distinct categories of goals within a single dataset. Results focused on a dataset of 10 learning subjects and over 16,000 goal-based Twitter messages. It showed (1) different goal categories and (2) the correlation between the LDA parameter for the number of topics and the type of subject. Evaluations of goal attributes also showed an increase of goal specificity, commitment and self-confidence after observing different types of goals from peers.

Goal-Setting enhances learning by providing a sense of direction and purpose. Often only a few goals are suggested, as a result many learners fail to find the goals that they can relate to. To address this problem, we propose to extract a large number and variety of goals from social media. Learners can then observe goal-based messages from others and adopt the ones they find useful. Conceptually, this approach could be considered a combination of Goal-Setting and Observational Learning. To provide a practical implementation, we automate this process by retrieving a large number of messages from Twitter, classifying which of the messages contain goals, determining what those goals are.

This is a drain on our collective effectiveness through the production of inefficient software and the loss of man hours to inefficient coding. Imagine you ran a biology research lab. How would you get all of your biologists up to speed on best practices so they could write good software to amplify their laboratory efforts? From square one. That's what I'll be talking about - how to teach / how people learn as well as what needs to be learned in order to build effective teams. This is presentation slides of the paper "Attentional Parallel RNNs for Generating Punctuation in Transcribed Speech" in 5th International Conference on Statistical Language and Speech Processing (SLSP 2017) Abstract Until very recently, the generation of punctuation marks for automatic speech recognition (ASR) output has been mostly done by looking at the syntactic structure of the recognized utterances. Prosodic cues such as breaks, speech rate, pitch intonation that influence placing of punctuation marks on speech transcripts have been seldom used. We propose a method that uses recurrent neural networks, taking prosodic and lexical information into account in order to predict punctuation marks for raw ASR output. Our experiments show that an attention mechanism over parallel sequences of prosodic cues aligned with transcribed speech improves accuracy of punctuation generation.
