Treatments Available for Anxiety
People shouldn’t have to live their lives suffering from panic attacks and being terrified of
even the simplest of social interactions. If you are suffering from an anxiety disorder and feel
like it is impacting your life then you should seek help as there are many institutions and
professionals out there who understand completely and will stop at nothing to help you live a
normal life. Treatment can help many anxiety problems and can range from medication to
therapy depending on your circumstances.
Therapy
Therapy is in most cases the most effective option for people suffering with anxiety as it can
get to the bottom of the underlying causes of your worries and fears. Therapy can also help
you to relax and develop a new attitude towards situations so that you may overcome them
and keep gaining confidence. People who undergo therapy for their anxiety can also become
better at coping with bad or undesirable situations and can improve problem-solving skills.
Anxiety disorders can differ considerably from individual to individual with different roots of
causes and triggers. This means that not all disorders can be solved with just one kind of
therapy and adaptations must be made. Therapy should be tailored to a person’s specific
symptoms and diagnosis. Naturally, because of this there have been many different distinct
methods of therapy developed to help different types of anxiety.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
● Focuses on how thoughts, beliefs and attitudes affect the way you behave and how
you feel.
● Teaches coping skills to deal with all sorts of different problems.
● Can help to prevent and change negative thinking and behaviours associated with
depression.
● Can help to change thought patterns and behaviours that lead to anxiety.
● Points out worries and looks at them in a more realistic way.
More information here.
Applied Relaxation Therapy
● Teaches patients to relax muscles in situations which
would normally instigate symptoms of anxiety.
More information here. Image Source
Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy
● Practice based on the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction model created by Jon
Kabat-Zinn, who is an American professor emeritus of medicine and created the
Stress Reduction Clinic. He is also known for creating the Center for Mindfulness in
Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical
School.
● Combination of cognitive therapy with the principles of mindfulness.
● Specifically tailored for people who experience “repeated bouts of depression or
chronic unhappiness”.
More information here.
Interpersonal Therapy
● Focuses on personal relationships that patients may have that could be considered
disturbing and may cause depression or make it worse.
More information here.
Psychodynamic Therapies
● Can sometimes help with treating depression.
● Focuses on resolving internal psychological conflicts, usually related to childhood,
that can be rooted in certain patients.
● If a patient has a lifelong history and pattern of difficulty coping with negative or
self-damaging behaviour, a condition known as maladaptive coping mechanisms,
then long-term psychodynamic therapies can prove to be useful.
More information here.
Eye Movement Desensitisation Resolution (EMDR)
● This method is recommended especially for people who have experienced trauma or
suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
● Made up of an eight stage approach that recalls traumatising events and upsetting
memories while also engaging in side to side eye movement and other sensory
tasks.
More information here.
Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT)
● Originally developed to help manage Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD).
● Made up of individual and group sessions.
More information here.
Somatic Therapies
● These are body-centred practices and focus on the relationship between an
individual’s body and mind.
● These methods are based on the belief that thoughts and emotions have physical
impacts on the body.
More information here.
Interpersonal and Social Rhythm Therapy (IPSRT)
● Originally developed as a form of psychotherapy for one to one sessions between a
single clinician and patient. IPSRT has since been adapted to work in a few different
settings, one of which being outpatient and inpatient groups.
● Designed to help improve the moods of patients by understanding their biological and
social rhythms and working with these.
● Emphasises techniques to improve medication adherence, reduce social rhythm
disruptions and manage stressful life events.
● Teaches patients skills to help protect themselves against future episodes that may
develop.
More information here.
Self-Help Resources
Self-help resources may be appealing if therapy is too expensive or you
just feel that you would rather help yourself than go to a professional.
While these methods may work for some, they aren’t for everyone and it is
highly recommended that even if you do use methods to seek professional
help if you think you are suffering with anxiety. In some cases, self-help
resources may be the first treatment option that is given to a patient. There
are two main methods in which self-help can be delivered which are:
● Workbooks - Books like the Reading Well Books on Prescription. Reading Well
Books is a scheme that is supported by most local libraries meaning that they can be
checked out for free and no real prescription is needed.
● Computer-based CBT programmes - Online, there are several app-based CBT
courses that are recommended on the NHS apps library for treating anxiety and
panic attacks. You can search the apps library to find many apps that may be useful
to you.
You may also be referred to a course along with other people suffering from similar
symptoms and difficulties. Your Doctor may give you a resource to work through on your
own too.

Medicine
Some people suffer from really severe anxiety that therapy alone might not be able to help. If
this is the case, a doctor may prescribe a specific medication to individuals depending on
what their symptoms are and this will usually be at a low or even micro-dose to see what
effects the medicine has. The medication available for
people suffering from anxiety typically consists of:
● Antidepressants - usually a Selective Serotonin
Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI) which causes serotonin in
your brain to be produced at a higher and faster
rate. These drugs can have side effects so make
sure you know the risks before taking and take
precautions. More info.
● Pregablin - This is an anti seizure drug which is
usually used to treat epilepsy but is also licenced to treat anxiety. More info.
● Beta-blockers - These can be used to treat the physical symptoms of anxiety such
as rapid heartbeat, tremors and heart palpitations. They do not help with
psychological symptoms however. More info.
● Benzodiazepine Tranquillisers - This is for people with severe anxiety that impacts
everyday life. These drugs can also have very unpleasant side effects and are also
addictive so they should be prescribed at a low dose for a short time, usually through
a period of crisis. More info. Image Source

Treatments Available for Anxiety - The Linden Method

  • 1. Treatments Available for Anxiety People shouldn’t have to live their lives suffering from panic attacks and being terrified of even the simplest of social interactions. If you are suffering from an anxiety disorder and feel like it is impacting your life then you should seek help as there are many institutions and professionals out there who understand completely and will stop at nothing to help you live a normal life. Treatment can help many anxiety problems and can range from medication to therapy depending on your circumstances. Therapy Therapy is in most cases the most effective option for people suffering with anxiety as it can get to the bottom of the underlying causes of your worries and fears. Therapy can also help you to relax and develop a new attitude towards situations so that you may overcome them and keep gaining confidence. People who undergo therapy for their anxiety can also become better at coping with bad or undesirable situations and can improve problem-solving skills. Anxiety disorders can differ considerably from individual to individual with different roots of causes and triggers. This means that not all disorders can be solved with just one kind of therapy and adaptations must be made. Therapy should be tailored to a person’s specific symptoms and diagnosis. Naturally, because of this there have been many different distinct methods of therapy developed to help different types of anxiety. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) ● Focuses on how thoughts, beliefs and attitudes affect the way you behave and how you feel. ● Teaches coping skills to deal with all sorts of different problems. ● Can help to prevent and change negative thinking and behaviours associated with depression. ● Can help to change thought patterns and behaviours that lead to anxiety. ● Points out worries and looks at them in a more realistic way. • 2. Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy ● Practice based on the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction model created by Jon Kabat-Zinn, who is an American professor emeritus of medicine and created the Stress Reduction Clinic. He is also known for creating the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. ● Combination of cognitive therapy with the principles of mindfulness. ● Specifically tailored for people who experience “repeated bouts of depression or chronic unhappiness”. More information here. Interpersonal Therapy ● Focuses on personal relationships that patients may have that could be considered disturbing and may cause depression or make it worse. More information here. Psychodynamic Therapies ● Can sometimes help with treating depression. ● Focuses on resolving internal psychological conflicts, usually related to childhood, that can be rooted in certain patients. ● If a patient has a lifelong history and pattern of difficulty coping with negative or self-damaging behaviour, a condition known as maladaptive coping mechanisms, then long-term psychodynamic therapies can prove to be useful. More information here. Eye Movement Desensitisation Resolution (EMDR) ● This method is recommended especially for people who have experienced trauma or suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). ● Made up of an eight stage approach that recalls traumatising events and upsetting memories while also engaging in side to side eye movement and other sensory tasks. More information here. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) ● Originally developed to help manage Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). ● Made up of individual and group sessions.
  • 3. More information here. Somatic Therapies ● These are body-centred practices and focus on the relationship between an individual’s body and mind. ● These methods are based on the belief that thoughts and emotions have physical impacts on the body. More information here. Interpersonal and Social Rhythm Therapy (IPSRT) ● Originally developed as a form of psychotherapy for one to one sessions between a single clinician and patient. IPSRT has since been adapted to work in a few different settings, one of which being outpatient and inpatient groups. ● Designed to help improve the moods of patients by understanding their biological and social rhythms and working with these. ● Emphasises techniques to improve medication adherence, reduce social rhythm disruptions and manage stressful life events. ● Teaches patients skills to help protect themselves against future episodes that may develop. More information here. Self-Help Resources Self-help resources may be appealing if therapy is too expensive or you just feel that you would rather help yourself than go to a professional. While these methods may work for some, they aren’t for everyone and it is highly recommended that even if you do use methods to seek professional help if you think you are suffering with anxiety. In some cases, self-help resources may be the first treatment option that is given to a patient. There are two main methods in which self-help can be delivered which are: ● Workbooks - Books like the Reading Well Books on Prescription. Reading Well Books is a scheme that is supported by most local libraries meaning that they can be checked out for free and no real prescription is needed. ● Computer-based CBT programmes - Online, there are several app-based CBT courses that are recommended on the NHS apps library for treating anxiety and panic attacks. You can search the apps library to find many apps that may be useful to you. You may also be referred to a course along with other people suffering from similar symptoms and difficulties. Your Doctor may give you a resource to work through on your own too. Image Source
  • 4. Medicine Some people suffer from really severe anxiety that therapy alone might not be able to help. If this is the case, a doctor may prescribe a specific medication to individuals depending on what their symptoms are and this will usually be at a low or even micro-dose to see what effects the medicine has. The medication available for people suffering from anxiety typically consists of: ● Antidepressants - usually a Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI) which causes serotonin in your brain to be produced at a higher and faster rate. These drugs can have side effects so make sure you know the risks before taking and take precautions. More info. ● Pregablin - This is an anti seizure drug which is usually used to treat epilepsy but is also licenced to treat anxiety. More info. ● Beta-blockers - These can be used to treat the physical symptoms of anxiety such as rapid heartbeat, tremors and heart palpitations. They do not help with psychological symptoms however. More info. ● Benzodiazepine Tranquillisers - This is for people with severe anxiety that impacts everyday life. These drugs can also have very unpleasant side effects and are also addictive so they should be prescribed at a low dose for a short time, usually through a period of crisis. More info. Image Source Sources https://www.helpguide.org/articles/anxiety/therapy-for-anxiety-disorders.htm https://www.mind.org.uk/information-support/types-of-mental-health-problems/anxiety-and-p anic-attacks/anxiety-treatments/#.XapGYuhKiUk https://www.takingcharge.csh.umn.edu/what-types-psychotherapy-are-helpful-anxiety-and-d epression
