The 1906 San Francisco earthquake struck the city of San Francisco at 5:12 am on April 18, 1906, causing widespread damage with an estimated magnitude of 7.9. Over 80% of the city was destroyed and 250,000 residents were left homeless, with damage estimated at $400 million and over 3,000 deaths resulting from the quake and subsequent fires. The effects of the earthquake were felt from San Francisco north through the Santa Cruz Mountains to San Jose, and as far south as Los Angeles.
