This document discusses Pöyry's capabilities for multiphase flow simulations using their CFD/CMFD platform. The platform combines computational fluid dynamics and multicomponent fluid dynamics with multiphysics capabilities. It features modules for complex 2D and 3D turbulent flows with heat and mass transfer as well as dedicated modules for multi-fluid and particle flows. Example applications discussed include dam break problems, snow avalanches, coastal engineering projects, sea water intake designs, spillway designs, waterfalls, and Pelton turbines.

Suspected origin of pollution
Releases from the oil refinery is suspected. The
density of this pollution suggests that these are
heavy chemical constituents that evolve slightly
below the water surface, the density of which is
close to that of water ~0.9 kg/m3.

The Problem
The water desalination plant is located in an
industrial LNG harbour, such that the water intake
channel can be surrounded by oil droplets.
Solution(s)
A collector systems needs to be designed in order
to prevent such scenarios, which were found to
heavilly depend on the weather conditions.
Simulations of water-air-pollution are performed for
various designs (left panels), using TransAT.
