MobiWeb - SMS for Courier & Postal ServicesMobiWeb
Today’s life is mobile. Literally, people spend a considerable amount of their daytime on the way and use their mobile phones more than ever.
In 2014 there were more than 6 billion subscriptions. By early 2015, there will be more mobile phone subscribers than the world's population. With increasing penetration of mobile phones to the most rural areas, mobile networks cover more than 90% of the world’s population. Consumers are always on the move and expect to use services and products on the go. This combined with the fact that mobile phone is the most personal digital device there is, make mobile a great B2C communication channel.
With the internet and mobile revolution, expectations are shifting towards the mobile phone. Many globally established businesses now choose SMS as an important channel when planning their mobile strategy. The mobile phone has become the new “must have” for any serious “innovative” service.

Kubernetes & AI - Beauty and the Beast !?! @KCD Istanbul 2024Tobias Schneck
As AI technology is pushing into IT I was wondering myself, as an “infrastructure container kubernetes guy”, how get this fancy AI technology get managed from an infrastructure operational view? Is it possible to apply our lovely cloud native principals as well? What benefit’s both technologies could bring to each other?
Let me take this questions and provide you a short journey through existing deployment models and use cases for AI software. On practical examples, we discuss what cloud/on-premise strategy we may need for applying it to our own infrastructure to get it to work from an enterprise perspective. I want to give an overview about infrastructure requirements and technologies, what could be beneficial or limiting your AI use cases in an enterprise environment. An interactive Demo will give you some insides, what approaches I got already working for real.

GDG Cloud Southlake #33: Boule & Rebala: Effective AppSec in SDLC using Deplo...James Anderson
Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. He is known for his dynamic presentations in CI/CD and application security integrated in software delivery lifecycle.
Gopinath Rebala
Gopinath Rebala is the CTO of OpsMx, where he has overall responsibility for the machine learning and data processing architectures for Secure Software Delivery. Gopi also has a strong connection with our customers, leading design and architecture for strategic implementations. Gopi is a frequent speaker and well-known leader in continuous delivery and integrating security into software delivery.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
11. SMSSync shortcomings
• Requires an extra SIM card and android mobile
• Might not handle huge number of SMS
• Need to recharge the account on a constant
basic if you regularly send SMS from it
• The mobile number will be 10 digit
12. Working with VAS
• Value Added Services (VAS) provides SMS
services on behalf of telecom operators
• you can get 4 digit shortcode
13. How SMS Gateway works?
Application
Server
SMS Gateway
(E.g. Kannel)
Telecom Mobile
Http call SMSVPN
14. Advantages of shortcode
• Easy to remember 4 digit numbers
• VAS should provide APIs to send and receive
SMS
• You could set price for each SMS
• Will work for huge number of concurrent SMS
We will talking about the need of SMS in your application in the context of Nepal and what you need to know about making use of SMS as a medium in your application.
Before we start, lets start with the basis stats of the mobile environment in Nepal. As of Jul 2014, number of mobile users stood at 84% and 33% of them use internet and majority of them use 3G. As for smart phone, we still don’t know the real numbers. We can atleast assume that majority of those using 3G belong to smart phone users. But it doesn’t cover the whole population – which raises questions on if your users belong to that category only or beyond. Also 3G coverage in Nepal is not very high. We have to understand our target users and their target locations.
Based on our target users and target locations, we can see if our app solely based on internet is adequate or not. If our target areas is rural areas without 3G network, then we might have to consider other medium like SMS.
SMS might be one of the options based on your target users and locations. It might not be. Also the usage of sms depends on the type of content/services you are serving from your app. If it’s rich content, then sms is definitely not for you. SMS could be either push or pull based service. Push sms is where you send SMS directly to your customers like notifications or some alerts, send info through SMS. Similarly there could be pull sms where the user send information to you, seeking services like sending sms to take certain action like querying for the weather or temperature status.
What can you do with sms? Request for agriculture
How do you do that? There are quick solutions like smssync, an android based application, which turns your phone into local sms gateway. SMS gateway can send and receive sms and send to your application. This could be quick fix if you are planning to use sms in your app. Your app can now send sms to this mobile with smssync installed, which sends the sms to the designated URL, which can then process the process and send sms notification accordingly.
Though there are shortcomings, you can use it for quick testing and during the making of the MVP. There are services called VAS which gives you such services. VAS are authorized organisations who deal with the telecom and help you get the codes and provide apis to send and receive sms.
