Tópio: Creative Placemaking for Young Community Leaders

This project examines how citizens experience and engage with urban spaces in Brasov, Romania through ethnographic research methods. Researchers conducted walk-through tours with participants to understand how they navigate and interact with the city. They analyzed the data collected to identify themes of mobility, attentiveness, attachment, territoriality, and memory. The researchers involved students and community members to challenge their interpretations and ensure the project produces knowledge about the city from the perspective of its inhabitants. They aim to sustain the project by publishing academic papers, continuing research collaborations, and maintaining an online platform to engage the public.

However, as researchers and designers we have tools to change this reality. Let’s learn how we do!

1) The Bala Janaagraha program by Janaagraha Centre for Citizenship and Democracy provides civic education to school children to encourage active citizenship. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) organized an EU-wide seminar of the European Commission-funded project entitled “Active Citizenship: Enhancing Political Participation of Migrant Youth” (ACCESS), which IOM Helsinki has implemented during 2013-2015 in cooperation with partners in Czech Republic, Finland, France, Romania and Spain. The purpose of the EU-wide seminar was to disseminate the project results, in terms of how the project has contributed to the capacity building of migrant youth and partner municipalities involved. Furthermore, the seminar gave insights gained through the Peer Review’s conducted and launch the Online Self-Assessment Tool and the Discussion Paper produced by the project.

A survey of 6,184 public library users in Romania found that the library played an important role in developing digital skills, promoting social inclusion, and supporting employability and lifelong learning. The survey asked questions about where users first used computers and the internet, what they achieved through library activities, how library ICT services benefited them, and whether library programs helped with job searches or other learning. The results indicate that public libraries can have a high level of interconnection across areas like digital skills, social inclusion, employability, and lifelong learning.

Volunteer students organized a clean-up event in their neighborhood on May 6th as part of a project to raise environmental awareness. The goal was to educate students and the local community about environmental problems and encourage daily actions to improve the local environment. The students developed a new respect for their community and sense of pride after cleaning up. Volunteering helps improve lives and communities while also giving volunteers a greater sense of belonging. Keeping cities clean is important for public health, tourism, and future generations. Effective ways to do so include proper trash disposal and educating others.

This study examines the profound emotional, psychological, and professional impacts on students engaged in pro-Palestine protests, focusing on Generation Z's (Gen-Z) activism dynamics. This paper explores the significant sacrifices made by these students and even the professors supporting the pro-Palestine movement, with a focus on recent global movements. Through an in-depth analysis of printed and electronic media, the study examines the impacts of these sacrifices on the academic and personal lives of those involved. The paper highlights examples from various universities, demonstrating student activism's long-term and short-term effects, including disciplinary actions, social backlash, and career implications. The researchers also explore the broader implications of student sacrifices. The findings reveal that these sacrifices are driven by a profound commitment to justice and human rights, and are influenced by the increasing availability of information, peer interactions, and personal convictions. The study also discusses the broader implications of this activism, comparing it to historical precedents and assessing its potential to influence policy and public opinion. The emotional and psychological toll on student activists is significant, but their sense of purpose and community support mitigates some of these challenges. Το πρόγραμμα “Tópio: Creative Placemaking for Young Community Leaders” είναι μια νέα ιδέα που στοχεύει στην ενδυνάμωση των μαθητών δευτεροβάθμιας εκπαίδευσης και στην εκπαίδευση τους ώστε να γίνουνε οι ίδιοι καταλύτες της αλλαγής στη δική τους γειτονιά. Το όραμα είναι μια νέα ανάγνωση του σχολείου ως μια ανοιχτή πλατφόρμα συζήτησης και αλληλεπίδρασης για όλη τη γειτονιά, όπου οι μαθητές θα είναι οι υποκινητές της αλλαγής τόσο μέσα όσο και έξω από τις πόρτες του σχολείου. Μέσα από το πρόγραμμα επιθυμούμε να ωθήσουμε τους νέους να αρχίσουν να νοιάζονται για τη γειτονιά τους, την κοινότητα αλλά και το δημόσιο χώρο με το να συναποφασίσουν, να οργανώσουν και να συμμετέχουν ενεργά σε πολιτιστικές και άλλες δραστηριότητες, ξεκινώντας από το σχολείο τους και την αυλή τους, στη συνέχεια προσκαλώντας όλη τη γειτονιά μέσα στο σχολείο και τελικά βγαίνοντας έξω στη γειτονιά. απόδοση στα Ελληνικά: «Τόπιο: Δημιουργική Ενεργοποιήση του Αστικού Τόπου με τους Νέους σε Ηγετικό Ρόλο»

Μέσα από το πρόγραμμα επιθυμούμε να ωθήσουμε τους νέους να αρχίσουν να νοιάζονται για τη γειτονιά τους, την κοινότητα αλλά και το δημόσιο χώρο με το να συναποφασίσουν, να οργανώσουν και να συμμετέχουν ενεργά σε πολιτιστικές και άλλες δραστηριότητες, ξεκινώντας από το σχολείο τους και την αυλή τους, στη συνέχεια προσκαλώντας όλη τη γειτονιά μέσα στο σχολείο και τελικά βγαίνοντας έξω στη γειτονιά. απόδοση στα Ελληνικά: «Τόπιο: Δημιουργική Ενεργοποιήση του Αστικού Τόπου με τους Νέους σε Ηγετικό Ρόλο»
And this is the main street where the metro construction has closed many parts of it. Gaps in the urban fabric and life.
What I envision is the CULTIVATION of a generation of active citizens that will facilitate urban change on a neighbourhood level. This goal will be achieved via a creative placemaking process (explain if needed what placemaking is).
