The Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) program collects data on toxic chemical releases and waste management activities from U.S. industrial facilities. It was established by the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act of 1986 after a 1984 industrial disaster in Bhopal, India and a 1985 New York Times editorial calling for more toxic chemical data. The TRI makes data on toxic releases publicly available online and through mobile apps to support decision making by communities, government agencies, companies and others.
