DEFINITION OF TOTAL SURFACE AREA
• Total surface area is the total of the areas
covered by the surface of the objects.
• For example : the cube is covered by six
squares, this means that to find the total
surface area of a cube, the areas of those six
squares which are covering the cube should
be added together.
TOTAL SURFACE AREA OF A CUBE
• The cube is made up of six squares, so the
formula to be used when calculating the total
surface area of a cube =6(s²).
TOTAL SURFACE AREA OF A CUBOID
• The cuboid is made up of six faces(shapes). It
can be made of six rectangles.
• The formula to be used=2(LΧW)+2(LW)+2(LW)
TOTAL SURFACE AREA OF THE
CYLINDER
• Cylinder is a solid shape which is made up of
three shape which are; two circles and a
rectangle.
• Total surface area of the cylinder(formula)
=2(𝜋𝑟2
)+(LW)
TOTALN SURFACE AREA OF A CONE
• A cone has a circular base attached to a
curved face that wraps around and narrows
into a point. From the side, a cone looks like a
triangle. Objects that are shaped like cone
include party hats and funnels.
• Total surface area of a cone = 𝜋𝑟𝑠 + 𝜋𝑟2
• R is for radius while s is for slant height.
TOTAL SURFACE AREA OF A PYRAMID
• Pyramid has a polygonal base and flat
triangular faces, which join at a common point
called apex.
• Total surface area of a pyramid =(B+12ps)
SUMMARY
• Total surface area of solid shapes is found by
adding all the areas that build up such solid
shape. As the SI units of area are to be
squared, also the SI units of total surface area
are squared because here the areas are added
to find the total surface area of a solid shape.
• NB; Most of solid shapes are made up of
different shapes.
