Educational institutions are instrumental in
equipping students with the skills, knowledge, and
personal attributes necessary to navigate a
successful and fulfilling future. However, what guides
schools onto transformative paths are organizations like
Higher Education Innovation, LLC. With a mission to
empower colleges to adapt, innovate, and thrive in a rapidly
changing world, President Dr Mary Landon Darden's
visionary approach serves as an inspiration for women
aspiring to create meaningful change in academia.
Darden began her higher education leadership journey as a
second career in the mid-1990s. She became the wellness
director and subsequently added the position of coordinator
of community programs, which was a tiny division of the
college at that time. Over the next seven years of innovation
and entrepreneurship work, along with her administrative
assistant and support team of interns, they were able to
build the enrolment of that division from a few hundred to
6000 part-time enrolments.
Entrepreneurial Revolution of Higher Education
Darden has won a few state awards, but the big one was the
2001 National Exemplary Award from the National Council
of Continuing Education and Training. At that time, she was
offered a full research assistantship for her doctorate in
educational administration at Baylor University. She
completed that program in 2006 and began consulting,
researching, and writing.
She worked directly and indirectly with a number of
institutions and organizations and published her first book
with The American Council on Education (ACE) and
Rowman & Littlefield (R & L) in 2009, Beyond 2020:
Envisioning the Future of Universities in America. In 2010,
she accepted a position as Dean of a satellite campus for
Concordia University Texas in San Antonio.
There, along with her great team, she continued to build
partnerships with businesses and industry and develop out-
of-the-box programming and delivery mostly to non-
traditional students. In 2015, she left to found Higher
Education Innovation, LLC (HEI), a company that focused
on the entrepreneurial transformation of higher education
and its leadership.
In 2021, she published her second book (also published
with ACE and R & L), Entrepreneuring the Future of
Higher Education: Radical Transformation in Times of
Profound Change, which won the 2021 American Bookfest
Award (education/scholarly) and was named a winner of the
"Bookauthority Best Higher Education Books of all Time."
In nearly eight years of working with institutions across the
nation, Higher Education Innovation, LLC has had a 100
per cent success rate in assisting colleges and universities in
developing entrepreneurial presidents and administrators,
increasing enrolment from 20 to 40 percent, building
business and industry partnerships, and expanding
workforce training and credentialling, starting philanthropy
programs, running innovation workshops to help
institutions re-envision their role for the future with relevant
programming, emerging fields, niche development, job-
market alignment and more.
Catalyst in Radical Transformation
HEI now has a team of accomplished higher education
specialists/consultants who help lead institutions into future
success.
Through Darden's work and research with multiple
institutions, she has long seen the emerging crisis in higher
education. The resistance to change – which for so long was
somewhat of a stabilizing force for the academy in times of
gradual change – is now the albatross around its neck.

Higher education has
changed far too slowly. HEI's
primary goal now and for the
future is to be a leading
catalyst and partner for
radically transforming higher
education into what the
world needs it to be to meet
the extraordinary change that
is continuing and escalating
for everyone. To do this, HEI
is currently partnering on
various initiatives with
organizations like The
League for Innovation in the
Community College and the
National Association for
Community College
Entrepreneurship. It plans to
conduct in-depth studies
along with successful
institutional presidents from
across the U.S. to impact and
accelerate the transformation
process maximally.

Adapting Changes
The most significant challenges Darden has encountered in
her years working with the academy are risk aversion,
resistance to change, fear (mostly of failure), and inability
or unwillingness to make the necessary stretches into the
future. Research, training, tenacity, and success in training
and implementation have been the keys to overcoming
these challenges where they can be overcome.
One of her greatest moments of glory was when she
conducted an assessment of her first college that had not
been growing in enrolment despite being in one of the
fastest-growing areas in the country. From the findings and
recommendations, the college was able to increase its
enrolment by 37 per cent by the following fall semester.
This spurred Darden to continue and accelerate her outreach
and research, including writing her second book. The
awards she is most proud of are the 2001 NCCET National
Exemplary Award, the 2021 American Bookfest Award for
her second book, and the 2018 Distinguished Alumni Award
from The University of Texas Permian Basin. All of these
helped Darden realize that she was on the right track and
inspired her to ramp up the work.
The key principles that have guided Darden in her
leadership style and decision-making are integrity,
trustworthiness, transparency, compassion, kindness,
collaboration/teamwork, honesty, communication and
listening, admitting when wrong, innovation, investing in
the success of others, leading by example.
Building Greater Relevancy
Perhaps the most pressing issue in higher education is the
falling behind in the ability to prepare students for the
current and emerging job market. It is important to look at
the relevancy of the courses and programs. Darden believes
that educational institutions must teach students to think
critically and communicate, as well as prepare them for
careers.
Because of its research and successes, HEI is positioned to
assist institutions to self-disrupt and build greater relevancy.
The academy has already been disrupted by the private
sector to the tune of almost 3000 companies that are doing
just that and are entering the degree-granting and/or
credentialing market.
Expanding Operational Scale
Darden was tasked with the crucial mission of researching
and developing essential training for innovative leaders in
the education sector. This responsibility was entrusted to
her by Kentucky Community and Technical College System
President Jay Box and George Washington University
President Emeritus Stephen Joel Trachtenberg, who
expressed firm confidence in her abilities. Darden drew
strength from their continued support and encouragement as
she embarked on this monumental undertaking.
She hopes to work with higher education organizations to
build and implement on a large scale what HEI has been
able to do on a much smaller scale. She will be asking
higher education to think less "Ivory Tower" and more
"Silicon Valley" in their approach to the future.
Darden has some advice for other women aspiring to make
a difference in higher education – and some of this is based
on her dissertation, where she studied the success of 18
women presidents. She believes that women should know
that they will have to work harder, produce more, make
fewer mistakes, sometimes take bigger risks, communicate
very well, and be prepared to stretch into new and different
education skill areas. But, perhaps most importantly, they
need to make it a point to mentor other women and help
move them into innovative leadership roles.

Educational leaders make this process creative, engaging,

the primary objectives of education are to enlighten minds
and impart knowledge. These administrators have
tremendous power that helps in creating a supportive school
climate.
Education leaders encourage installing a shared vision that
promotes friendship and expectations. The most efficient
curriculum design offers a student-centric education and
builds strong bonds between teachers and students. They act
as mentors, assisting students in discovering who they are

by people who work in schools: schooling, knowledge,
teaching, and learning. Research data shows that varying

mean exist at the boundaries of education. Teaching staff,

She believes that raising that degree of professional and
personal understanding is the sector's collective challenge
to maximise the effectiveness of every classroom and
learning opportunity. Her entire body of work is devoted to
pursuing this same goal.

when the emphasis is on the students and the educational
process, and technology is used to support the learners'
needs by providing on-demand assistance and support at the
learning point or making practices inclusive and accessible.
Learning and learners are observed to be impacted when
learners and knowledge are the centre of attention.
In her co-authored book, "From EdTech to PedTech:
Changing the Way We Think about Digital Technology,"
with Peter Twining, she explains what the research says
about the appropriate use of digital technology and how to
apply those insights to enhance learning efficacy. They are
thrilled that the book has become so well-known
worldwide; it simply shows that a new strategy that puts
learners and learning first is needed.
A Visionary Leader
With her singular vision and tireless dedication to progress,
Dr Fiona has brought about a wave of transformation in the
educational field. She has a broad range of experiences
because of the nature of her work. She might be working
with a group of kids on the floor of a classroom one day,
then teaching a group of school administrators the next,
talking about product development with edtech vendors the
next, and doing scholarly research the following day.
She advocates for a clear purpose or "why" behind an

other stakeholders compete for their attention. She says
that's something that educators and educationists should be
mindful of. They must always maintain learners and
learning as the primary focus.
Inviting a Wave of Transformation
Dr Fiona conducted several research interviews during the
pandemic as kids got ready to return to school after an
extended homeschooling period. "I don't want to go back to
school because my teacher prevents me from learning," a
child said.
They said they felt empowered and agentive while learning
remotely because they had the freedom to decide when and
how to finish their assignments. They did not want to go
back to rigorously scheduled classes, where they would sit
in rows, wait to be told what to do and when, and listen to
the teacher talk for most of the day. These days, education
doesn't have to be like that. This scenario reaffirmed Dr
Fiona's commitment to transforming the education
landscape.
Insights to Make a Difference
Dr Fiona shares her insights based on her years of
experience and expertise. Every interaction and encounter,
in her opinion, has the potential to impart new knowledge
or open people's eyes. She suggests keeping an open mind
and learning from everyone you encounter at all times.

information comes to light. It's crucial always to have
many questions, lead by example in lifelong learning, and
include others in the journey.

international development and

adventure. It all began with her initial
role at the United States Agency for
International Development (USAID)
on the Healthy Mother Healthy Child
project. Despite challenges in
accessing maternal care, this project
achieved a significant milestone by
notably reducing maternal mortality
rates.
From this crucial starting point, Dr
Sherif’s career path led her through
various USAID projects and
participation in the European Union
Trade Enhancement program,
immersing her in the realm of
economic development and the pursuit
of global millennium goals. The
pinnacle of her aspirations was realized
when she secured her dream job with
the U.S. Foreign Commercial Service,
where she led efforts to promote
education as an export sector,
significantly contributing to the
nation's prosperity. As a Commercial
Service trade professional, she helped
companies like Disney Imagineering,
Raytheon, Bell Helicopters, Paramount
Picture, Dream Works Pictures,
National University, Northrop
Grumman and many more with their
export successes in global markets.
Venturing into Educational Realm
Life took an unexpected turn when Dr
Sherif moved to the U.S. during the
Arab Spring, marking the beginning of
a new, but a little uncertain career path.
“Luck is when preparation meets
opportunity” is one of her favourite
quotes, and she had actually won the
diversity visa lottery that same year.
During this phase, Dalia found
profound inspiration to pursue a career
in education. Assisting students in
gaining admission to U.S. colleges and
universities ignited a deep passion
within her. Their stories of success and
gratitude remain a wellspring of
inspiration.
Another twist in Dr Sherif's journey

success. Despite concerns from family
and friends about burnout during Dr
Sherif's time in graduate school, she
found that pursuing higher education is
akin to opening a door that leads to a
hallway full of doors. Now, she
remains enrolled in graduate school
pursuing a data science degree, even
after obtaining the terminal degree. Her
motivation is fueled by a deep love for
learning, which continually inspires
her to seek more knowledge.
Guided by the warmth and support of
the community, Dr Sherif endeavoured
to give back through service on various
organization boards, including the
Asian Chamber of Commerce, East
End Chamber, Women Professionals in
Government, Girls Empowered, and
the Community College Baccalaureate
Association.

The challenges of her first day as a

the students she has had the privilege
to teach and mentor. Their successes,

dedication to education. Her dedication
to the Women Professional in
Government as the Scholarship Chair
and her contributions to the East End
Chamber of Commerce through the
scholarship and mentorship committee

to experience real-life scenarios even if

modality. Dr Sherif also established a

with the Information Systems Security
Association (ISSA) aimed at preparing
students in the cyber security program
for the professional landscape. This
mentorship initiative provided students

offering them a bridge between

provides them with a frame or reference

Dr Sherif's most significant

Texas. She played a pivotal role in
establishing and expanding the UHD
MBA, and helped elevatee it from being
the smallest in Houston to becoming the
largest in the State of Texas. This
accomplishment not only reflected a
transformative growth trajectory but also
underscored the program's significant
impact and influence within the
educational landscape. Additionally, she
spearheaded the building of the Lone Star
College baccalaureate degrees, leading to
a remarkable threefold increase in
enrolment within just three years.
Helping students earn a world-class
bachelor’s degree at an extremely
affordable price point was a dream come
true. These achievements were
acknowledged and honoured by
prestigious accolades, including the Jesse
H. Jones Award in 2023, and the
esteemed recognition of the Houston
Business Journal Woman Who Means
Business Award in 2018. These awards
validated her innovative contributions
and relentless team efforts in shaping the
educational sphere and empowering
students within the higher education
community.
Dr Sherif has also received four
meritorious honour awards from the
International Trade Administration, U.S.
Commercial Service, and the U.S.
Department of State and several finalist
excellence awards as an adjunct faculty.
She is also a member of the Alpha Chi
National Honour Society and PSI Chi
International Honour Society in
Psychology. She has just concluded her
five-year term of service on the board of
the Asian Chamber of Commerce, one of
the largest and most impactful multipliers
in Houston. Dr Sherif culminated her
service by witnessing an MOU between
the chamber and the U.S. Small Business
Administration to support local

The other pressing issue is that many
schools are already running as
businesses. When it is a business, the
students will be more the products
instead of real humans.
Kristy envisions changing this if she is
given the opportunity. She will be
building up a new educational system
and a school to lead by example.
In her presence at all past corporate
organizations, she influenced a lot of
the company culture, and her courage
in being the changemaker helped many
people make better choices and,
particularly, be their authentic selves.
According to Kristy education isn't an
effective education if it's not designed
for people.
