Ecoreco, India’s pioneering E-waste Recycling Company,
started in January 2005 and introduced the concept of
electronic waste management in the country. Prior to this,
informal scrap merchants were responsible for collecting
and dismantling e-waste.
As the only company in the WEEE industry in India listed

Revolutionizing India’s E-Waste Recycling Industry
The growth and progression of the e-waste recycling

criteria of the tender.
Since April 2008, the introduction of the first E-waste
Guidelines in India and the subsequent E-waste
Management Rules from 1st April 2023, Mr. B. K. Soni has

The Success Story
A decade ago, Alex Magaraggia and
James Calver two young
entrepreneurs commenced on a journey
by founding Ecoware – a dynamic and

Being first to market, some 11-12 years
back with advanced raw material
technology that challenged the
well-established plastic industry was
by no means a small task for the
co-founders.
Alex and James, with a small team
around them, spent years knocking on
doors explaining to prospects that this
was indeed the future of the industry.

They were laughed out of board rooms,
told to ‘get real’ and more importantly
said ‘NO’, for the first five or so years.
It was a challenging task for the
co-founders. They viewed No as YES,
so they kept turning up and refining
their product and brand. It took
approximately five years for the tide to
turn, and then, it was only forward.
Ecoware went from only certified
compostable hot cups and lids, to
having a comprehensive range using a
handful of different certified raw
materials.
Ecoware now has over 500 SKU’s and
provides an environmental solution for
any takeaway (food and beverage)
environment. Its range enables the
clients to make their customers proud.

now ingrained in every corporate

The past couple of years have seen
exponential growth and a shift of
attention towards a global

Alex and James were keen on using the

Having a mutual understanding, they

another person to implement

people. “It’s what we believe is

company is looking at the globe for
expansion. “We will continue to grow

with some investment into those
countries that are already taking off,”
explained James.

with the third party govt assistance,
team Ecoware is focused on the North
American and the European markets as

What is your company’s approach to sustainability in
waste management, and how do you ensure compliance
with local and state regulations on waste management?
At Flame UK, we believe there’s a recovery route for every
waste stream. We operate on a zero-to-landfill approach to
ensure as much waste as possible is diverted from landfill.
We’re incredibly proud to have been able to find different
recovery routes for waste streams that are often viewed as
‘unrecyclable.’ This includes a range of materials from used
disposable vapes to food waste. We know that resources are
limited, so we feel a responsibility to do what we can to
discover new recovery routes for waste and protect the
resources we already have.
We provide all our customers with a high level of waste
reporting, allowing them to see exactly where their waste is
disposed of and helping them to ensure they’re compliant
with all environmental legislation. As a fully licensed waste
carrier, we’ll work with our customers to ensure their waste
is dealt with correctly and safely.
How do you measure the success of your sustainable
waste management initiatives?
As a business, we’re constantly evaluating how we can
improve our sustainable waste management initiatives.
We’re tracking the carbon footprint of around 90% of our
waste collections. This enables us to identify key areas of
improvement and helps with making collections even more
sustainable.
On a personal level, we’re tracking our carbon footprint as
a business, too, not just our operations. We had our carbon
emissions calculated by Nottingham Trent University and,
from this, were able to make the necessary changes to
become a carbon-neutral business. We’re working on a

waste management?
One of Flame UK’s current projects is Flame Sustain. This

through their waste management. Illustrating a roadmap to
showcase our journey to sustainability, covering numerous
objectives we have set ourselves to further our efforts to
sustainability.
We believe one of the best things we can do as a sustainable
business is to educate our employees on everything
sustainability. If we can continue to invest in and educate
our employees, they’re in a better position to help our
customers with their sustainability journeys. Our staff is
constantly taking part in carbon management and
sustainability courses. Training for newer members of staff
is also provided as part of their induction to help develop
their knowledge. The more they know, the more they can
help the businesses we work with.
As an inventive leader, what advice would you give to

The best advice we could give to other businesses is to
make a start. There’s a common misconception that
sustainability is a big scary journey, but there are so many
small things you can implement to make your waste
management more sustainable. It can be as small as putting
a compost bin in your office kitchen for food waste. Once
you’ve got the ball rolling, it becomes even easier to
become more sustainable with your waste. Take a look at all
your different waste streams and identify all the changes
you could implement. Once you’ve got sight of the bigger
picture, making your business more sustainable will no
longer seem like a daunting task.
How to envision scaling your organization’s services and
operations in 2023 and beyond?
Going forward, we’re aiming to expand our network of
approved suppliers to cover even more waste streams. This
helps us to make sure that we can handle any waste stream
our customers might come into contact with. We believe
there’s a recovery route out there for any and every waste
material, and finding these is crucial for the future of the
planet.

Could you provide a brief of your background and the
journey that motivated you to your current position in

In 1998, I started Malamall.com, which launched in a
market that was not ready for it at the time. However, I
learned a lot from this experience. Later in 2007, we formed
a SaaS company called Martjack, which worked with
companies like Pizza Hut, Walmart, and Future Group.
Eight years later, it was acquired by Capillary Technologies.

Hence, after deep research, I decided that waste
management could be the next big thing for me. Therefore,
along with Abhishek Deshpande and Anirudha Jalan, we
started Recykal in 2017. Later, Ekta Narain and Vikram
Prabakar also joined our journey.
Now we have a PAN India presence with the largest and
most digitally integrated network of brands, recyclers,
waste aggregators, and government agencies in Recykal’s

How does Recykal help brands, recyclers, and
government agencies?
Recykal Provides Circularity and Sustainability Solutions to
Brands, Recyclers, and Govt. Agencies with a set of
digitally empowered tools that can be further customized
for effective waste management.
1. Brands: Recykal helps brands implement Extended
Producer Responsibility (EPR) compliance, which
requires brands to take responsibility for the disposal of
their products after they have been used. Recykal offers
a variety of services to help brands achieve this goal,
including setting up recycling programs, tracking
metrics, and implementing effective communication
strategies. Brands can also run take-back programs to
become plastic-neutral.
Recykal offers IT Asset Disposal services for brands
with heavy IT inventory. With 100% secure data
erasure, privacy protection, refurbishing/reuse services
for the equipment, if possible, and Recykal takes care
of recycling the remaining e-waste responsibly. This
process helps to reduce the environmental impact
caused by electronic waste and offers a comprehensive
solution for e-waste management.
2. Recyclers: Recykal’s Marketplace connects the
recyclers and sellers of plastic/paper/metal/e-waste
scrap to transact efficiently in a single platform.
Recykal Marketplace solves the challenges of
consistent material supply, timely payments for sellers,
and traceability and transparency in transactions for
recyclers. With our marketplace, we are bridging the

3. Government Agencies: Recykal helps government
agencies monitor and enforce regulations related to
waste management and recycling. e.g., Recykal
digitizes Material Recovery Facilities as Smart Centres
with the implementation of “Smart Skan” an AI-
powered waste analytics and sorting program. For the
implementation of Smart Skan, QR-coded plastic bags
are distributed to households, and only dry waste is
collected in these bags. These bags are collected, and
the waste is segregated into different categories at the
MRF (Material Recovery Facility) center with Smart
Skan. Smart Skan is aimed at preventing the
contamination of plastic by keeping it separate from
wet waste and educating users on the importance of
responsible waste management. It induces behavioral
change amongst consumers toward proper waste
disposal, provides information on recycling options,
and allows government agencies to track waste back to
the generator.
Apart from Smart Skan, Recykal’s Digital DRS (Deposit
Refund System) is benefitting Municipal Corporations and
other government bodies in India. Digital DRS involves
providing serial unique identification codes (SUIN) to
distributors of consumer goods, which are then affixed to
the product packaging. Customers are required to pay a
refundable deposit at the point of purchase, which varies
from Rs. 2 to 10 depending on the type of packaging
material. When the packaging material is returned to the
collection center after usage, customers are refunded the
deposit upon scanning the SUIN. This cycle of waste
collection and recycling ensures the circularity of waste
materials, promoting sustainability and responsible waste
disposal habits among residents and tourists. The digital
DRS system applies to various types of product packaging,
including chip packets, water and cold drink bottles,
sachets, shampoo and other personal care product bottles,
tetra packs, milk packets, aluminum cans, and glass
containers.
How does the Recykal Foundation contribute to changes
that promote sustainability and enable a circular
economy?
Recykal aims to make a positive impact on the stakeholders
involved in the waste management sector by working
closely with waste collectors and providing them with
safety training and opportunities to increase their income.
One of our verticals, ‘Recykal Foundation,’ focuses on
educating the community about the concept of the circular
economy, raising awareness through campaigns, and
increasing efficiency in waste management practices.
Recykal Foundation collaborates with other organizations
to educate people on recycling and responsible waste
management. Through outreach programs that include
tailor-made activities and CSR initiatives, Recykal
encourages people to participate in waste reduction
activities.
How do you measure the success of your sustainable
waste management initiatives?
Recykal’s unique, integrated approach marks India’s first
digital circularity and sustainability company that connects
waste generators with waste processors and recyclers, and
brand owners to solve some of the biggest challenges faced
by the industry. Today, we have 210+ brands, 325+
recyclers and co-processors, 10,000+ businesses,

Our efforts for revolutionizing the waste-commerce sector
with digital innovations led to recognition as a “Technology

As an inventive leader, what advice would you give to
other companies looking to implement sustainable waste
management practices?
Our advice would be to start small, focus on education and
communication, leverage technology, and work with
industry experts who can guide you toward the best waste
management practices and solutions. Companies can
embrace circular economy principles that focus on
reducing, reusing, and recycling resources to minimize
waste generation. Another approach can be, engaging
employees in sustainability practices and partnering with
waste management firms that can accelerate the company’s
sustainability efforts. Conducting regular audits and
measurements of waste management’s effectiveness to
monitor progress and identify opportunities for ongoing
improvement. By doing so, companies can make a
significant impact on reducing waste and contributing to a
more sustainable future.
How do you envision scaling your organization’s
services and operations in 2023 and beyond?
Recykal’s vision is to channel 5% of India’s waste into a
circular economy. We have made inroads into new
categories like tyres and batteries and aim to grow their
volume similar to what we have done in plastics, e-waste,
and paper. We plan to implement dDRS in multiple ULBs
and even a state-level implementation.
It can be inferred from the environmental policies enforced
by developed and developing countries that the volume and
scope of recycling will continue to grow in the next 25
years. Upon achieving the set goals, recycling has the
potential to become the thought leader in the clean-tech and
sustainability space.

Changing the Landscape of Sustainability
When a certain company’s scrap is properly
disposed, the chances of them ending up on the
black market are less to none. A company can
also be confident that its liability will be reduced, that its
competitors will not gain an advantage, and that the quality
of its product will stay good. Sometimes, it is difficult to
manage and trace the supply chain of the purchase, usage,
and the disposal of a product. But the role of modern
technology, especially the likes of AI, can play a vital role
in the supply chain.
Using certified destruction services, the disposal procedure
can be tracked and secured. This chain of custody ensures
the highest level of professionalism by including
photographic and video evidence of the destruction.
Looking at this, TeknTrash, an AI analytics company
started to offer its services to deliver the missing link of
product lifecycle. It uses AI to locate products at disposal
time and thus obtain real time consumer data.
In the following interview, Al Costa, the Founder and
CEO of TeknTrash, sheds light on the journey of his
company, its offerings, and the future aspects of the
GreenTech sector.
Please brief our audience about TeknTrash, its USPs,
and how exactly does it help companies match their
sales to their effective consumption.
TeknTrash is an AI and analytics company which obtains
data from trash. We believe that today we recycle
everything except the most important part, which is the
consumer data a product contains. So, the who, the when,
and the where of a disposed product are important metrics
which need to be accounted for, and yet for some reason
they are not.
We live in a data-based world and data has been named the
‘new oil’ which makes even less sense. Finally, while we
buy our products from many sources, there is one single
place where they all eventually end up at, which is the
garbage. Thus, being able to locate those products there
means knowing the entire consumption of an individual,
and that is powerful.
Shed some light on TeknTrash’s offerings and how they
impact the industry and its clients?
We believe the recycling model is a failed one, as it only
punishes if people don’t recycle, but does not reward if they
do. And because it depends on the sale of materials, which
pays little, so it is unable to pay too. The end result is that
today 11% of methane in the atmosphere already comes
from trash (and methane is 88 times stronger than CO2
causing global warming), only 6% of plastic is actually
recycled, the largest trash dump is actually the Great Pacific
Garbage Patch, etc.
So, we think data is the solution to that problem because it
is valuable. So, we can reward people for recycling. To that
end, we created stipra.com, which is currently the only
service that effectively rewards people for proper recycling,
while providing valuable post-sales data. Regular people
register at stipra.com and take pictures of their consumer
products before throwing them in the trash.
Companies then register at corp.stipra.com and consume
that data, geolocating where their products ended up. So,
this allows consumer product companies know their
consumers better, encourages proper recycling, and creates
a source of income for vulnerable people.

Al, please brief us about your journey in the industry
and how you have contributed to TeknTrash’s success.
I am a biologist with an MA in Computer Engineering. My
father was a diplomat and I’ve lived in countries such as
Haiti, so poverty alleviation is something deeply ingrained
in me. I founded TeknTrash while living in Barcelona and
later I came to the UK to promote it.
Before that, I created companies in USA, UK, Brazil, and
Spain, sold my first to one listed in Nasdaq, fundraised in
Silicon Valley, lost everything in another, so it’s been a fun
ride. And thus, I am called to help startups with marketing,
fundraising, and strategy.
TeknTrash is led by a team of scientists and thus, we do not
enjoy the greenwashing that unfortunately is taking place in
the market. To that end, I brought in Dr Kaveh Madani,
who served as the Deputy Head of Iran’s Department of
Environment and was Vice President of the United Nations
Environmental Assembly Bureau, to create a business
model which effectively rewards companies participating in
Stipra with real and accountable carbon credits.
In fact, since garbage produces methane and that is such a
strong GHG gas, even a single bottle produces enough
carbon to be able to translate into credits, so that means
companies can obtain carbon credits they can sell in the
market for using stipra. For example, Tesla makes more
money from selling carbon credits to its competitors than
actual car sales, so that is a real opportunity for companies.
Being an experienced leader, share your opinion on how
the adoption of modern technologies has impacted the
green tech space and what more could be expected in
the future?
When it comes to Greentech, I always make a comparison
with the Brazilian ethanol model. Having lived in that
country for 20 years, I saw how it created a biofuel model
that is actually sustainable and widely implemented, as all
fuel pumps carry ethanol, all petrol carries 27.5% ethanol,
½ of the fleet is flex, etc. And that was created not by the
need to be sustainable and to reduce carbon, but simply
because the country would not have the funds to import oil
during the fuel crisis of 1973.
Thus, we need to look at the financial sustainability of a
green solution, as that speaks much louder than the ESG
component, and therefore is more able to bring widespread
usage and real ESG benefits.
In fact, if our leaders could see the clear financial benefit of
ESG, they would take actions, but they are only presented
with the pure environmental benefits, so they of course
don’t care. So, it’s a poor marketing scheme if you ask me.

TeknTrash to sustain operations while ensuring the
safety of your employees at the same time?
We may be one of the few companies which were
unaffected from the pandemic, as our operations were
already remote, and I plan them to ever be. In this, I always
make a comparison with Harry Potter’s Gringotts Bank.
This bank has no ATMs, APP, online presence, etc. It
requires its customers to go to the one and only office for
any common banking operation such as withdrawing,
depositing, getting a statement, etc.
However, no one today would open an account in a bank
which requires its customers to go there. On the other hand,
no one would trust a lot of money to a bank which has no
offices, where one can go and physically speak with a
manager when things go sour. That’s why banks created
ATMs. These are ‘offices’ of sorts where people can do
most of their everyday banking operations, and if they
require something fancier, then they can go to the main one.
At TeknTrash, we plan to have a similar model. We will
have small offices (ATMs) spread across the UK where
employees can work, meet, and do usual everyday work.
These offices will be of the size of a room with space for up
to four people and will allow employees to work at a place
close to their homes, while still physically interacting with
other employees.
They will have an app which allow them to choose the
closest office to wherever they are at the moment, open the
door, get a laptop, printer, etc. from some closet, have a
coffee, turn on the heating, etc. For example, if they need to
have a meeting with many people, they can choose a larger
office or just go to the main one. That way, they don’t need
to waste their lives away commuting to work and they can
still feel part of an enterprise instead of feeling like they
work in solitude of some trappist monastery.
What would be your advice to budding entrepreneurs
who aspire to venture into the green tech market?
The same I always give to any entrepreneur irrespective of
area: that there are two ways of succeeding. The first way is
by quality: when you do the right thing, talk to the right
people, close the right deals, etc. However, that usually
requires previous expertise, college education, etc., and that
is the main reason why so many people do not try being an
entrepreneur. To those, there is a second way, which is by
quantity.
Basically, going there, doing the wrong things, talking to
wrong people, closing the wrong deals, etc., and by doing
that acquiring the expertise, knowledge, techniques, etc.
that the best MBA would not be able to provide. Both
methods lead to success, the only difference is the second
takes longer as it requires many more tries, but it is also
more satisfying due to learning along the way.
How do you envision scaling TeknTrash’s operations
and offerings in 2023 and beyond?
We are embarking on a major fundraise which will allow us
ultimately to develop a smart bin. This will allow people to
just throw their garbage in one single bag, do the recycling,
take pictures of all the products, and reward in stipra.com
the corresponding points. These bins will initially be
deployed in shopping centers, as we believe that the public
would prefer to go to a shopping center that uses smart bins
which reward people for their disposed products rather than
others that have old and boring garbage cans.
In the future, we envision this to become a major player in
the recycling industry, as we could take the content of this
bins to the recycling centers, charge for that service, and
they would be glad to pay as the products would already
much better recycled than through them. So, they would be
able to sell more paper, plastic, metal, etc.
Demonstrating Excellence
TeknTrash is a finalist to the Red Herring Top 100 Europe
competition in 2021. It was selected by the WEF (World
Economic Forum) as one of the three most impactful
technologies, and Euronews chose TeknTrash as #1
Greentech company to watch in 2021.
“So far, we received three grants, so we are making good
noise and getting recognition. Stipra.com is already
capturing data on top products such as Nescafé, Nivea,
Pepsi, and even Ikea furniture! So, we are happy overall,”
