Tools That Make You Go Hmmmm!

Editor's Notes

  1. (Timing 0:30 mins.) My name is Mary Duvall. I would like to tell you a little bit about myself. As you can see I have a broad background in regards to my education. Some would call me a “Career Switcher”. To me, this means that I bring many different perspectives and experiences to the library and classroom.
  2. (Timing 0:30-1:00mins.) My first career began in the world of business as an Accounting and Benefits Administrator for Winchester Metals, Inc., a small family owned business in Winchester, VA. Although I loved working for this company, I believed that I needed to share my knowledge and skills with a bigger audience. So I returned to school to obtain my endorsement and licensure in Business Education. I proceeded to pursue a teaching position and landed at Millbrook High School. After about five years of teaching, I decided to spread my wings again and add a Marketing endorsement to my license. However, that was not enough either.
  3. (Timing 1:30-2:30.) So last fall, I began the process of enrollment into ODU’s Library and Science Media Masters program which would enable me to help students and staff. The library, a learning commons, has many tools to help shape and redefine the standards and is an area that invites collaboration and creativity between staff, students, and parents. My mission as a school librarian is to ensure that our library serves as a place for students and staff to maximize their learning potential, discover and understand cultural diversity, and “be effective users of ideas and information” in an ever changing society. The five areas I have listed on this slide must work together to accomplish this goal. No one area is any greater than the next but at times may play a larger role in the process. Technology is in my opinion the driving force behind much of our student learning. An example of this can be found in Virginia’s new graduation requirement that requires that all students either take an online course or pass an online certification for a verified credit.
  4. (Timing 2:30-4:00 mins.) As educators, we are well aware of the importance of standards. The standards for core classes in Virginia are known as SOLs, for career and technology classes they are known as competencies. Standards and competencies are determined by federal, state, and local governing boards as well as prospective employers. So, how can we help each other and our students meet these expectations? I would like to show you a few tools that I have been introduced to in my Production class and at a recent Virginia Association of Marketing Educators conference. I hope these tools make you say “Hmmmm” and do not worry, I will have handouts at the end with the tools I discussed today so you can go back and try them for yourself. Some of the tools were easy and some only became easy through a process of trial and error. My focus today is on how we as librarians can help each other in any setting but more particularly the high school setting.
  5. (Timing 4:00-6:00 mins.) Word clouds are a great tool that allow text to be visually generated making words appear in a cloud or shape like setting. Words are easily recognized and are given importance or relevance based on shape, size, font, and color. This is an apple shaped word cloud about my favorite book genres that I created for my website. Remember words can be vocabulary, descriptions, thoughts, or anything that can be put into text. (Click on the link and check out my tagxedo on my website)
  6. (Timing 4:00-6:00 mins.) Tagxedo is a popular choice for creating word clouds. This tool is free and easy to use. Users can create word clouds in Tagxedo and save to their hard drives, embed in blogs, and share with friends. Tagxedo offers shapes, but does not require you to sign-up for an account. Students can create these Meeting the Standard- Economics and Personal Finance requires students to identify the factors of production. There are four factors which effect our market economy-notice how each word is given relevance. This is a high school standard, but it is also found in Standards History Grade 2-Economics-2.7The student will describe natural resources (water, soil, wood, and coal), human resources (people at work), and capital resources (machines, tools, and buildings). I’d like to show you the site before we move on to the next example. (click on the link and explore the site, show a quick example)
  7. (Timing 6:00-7:00 mins.) An example to meet the standard EarthScience-ES.12. The student will investigate and understand that energy transfer between the sun and Earth and its atmosphere drives weather and climate on Earth. Key concepts include a) observation and collection of weather data. How cool would it be for a student to observe thunderstorms and the pattern of lightening and then record their observations in this lightening word cloud?
  8. (Timing 7-8:00 mins.) Wordle is another word cloud tool that is easy to use and does not require signing up for an account. Students could choose to meet this English standard by evaluating a famous quote. After analyzing the quote, students would be encouraged to use words to visually explain the cause and affect of the quote’s message on various audiences.
  9. (Timing 8:00-9:00 mins.) The teacher could direct students to quotes made by famous authors, historical figures, etc…. I chose this one as the affect of the quote could have a negative impact on the treatment and advancement of females in education and the workplace. Students could also show the positive effects and how Eleanor Roosevelt championed for equal treatment of females and the important role the wife of a president plays in politics.
  10. (Timing 9-10:00 mins.) These are just some of the negative words that came to my mind after I read that quote. Just imagine what your students will think of when they read a quote, view a video, or listen to a podcast. Words are powerful tools within themselves. Wordle allows users to make the words relevant and gives a certain amount of distinction to each word. A note of caution when using this tool. Wordle will ask if the cloud can be publicized in the public gallery. Personal information should be withheld as a matter of privacy. Let’s look at the site www.wordle.net -go to link on the Wordle
  11. (Timing 10-13:00 mins.) Foreign Language is a valuable tool to employers and to making students more aware of cultural diversity in both the educational and workplace settings. Spanish students must be able to recognize simple spoken and written Spanish through a variety of media based on familiar topics. Bighugelabs offers both teachers and students the opportunity to produce a variety of visual media applications such as posters, magazine covers, or a jigsaw puzzle. (Click on the link- Show the tool that I used for my next slide)
  12. (Timing 13-14:00 mins.) Anyone could make a simple magazine cover like I did and ask the class to translate the line titles on the magazine. Students would then be asked to do the same thing, or use any of the other free tools available on Bighugelabs. I would suggest putting simple topics into a bowl and letting students draw out the topic names. Since not all students have smartphones, use pictures from clipart in Word or images from www.Flikr.com. Just remember that students should cite all pictures or media used that is not their own work.
  13. (Timing 14-16 mins.) History students could use the Bighugelabs tool to create this poster. Even though this is not a motivational poster, the black background gives prominence to the event. When studying certain eras, students could create a poster and questions that classmates would respond to as well as encourage a full class discussion. (Discuss the Blog click on Word document link.)English classes could use this poster tool as a visual aid to a journaling assignment. Write an entry into a journal that summarizes the events of the day for one of the men in this photograph. How would you explain his thoughts and emotions before, during, and after he stands in line for bread?
  14. (Timing 16-18:30 mins.) Infographics are great tools to visually present information. Information can include statistics, pictures, symbols, text that is relevant to the chosen topic. Infographic content should consider the following items-Audience, clarity, relevance, and plot. This is the Piktochart.com site and you can see for yourself what options are available. Piktochart claims on their site that even an 11-year-old can use this site.
  15. (Timing 18:30-20:00 mins.) Piktochart requires users to sign up for an account. Students or staff should have or create an email address that can be used for purposes such as signing up for online tools. This infographic could be created by students or teachers to show an analysis of the value of employment. Notice that there is a bar graph, text, symbols and pictures all neatly organized to convey relevant information. This site was a bit difficult at first to use until I became comfortable with the tools. This tool requires a bit of time so when suggesting this site you may want to inform users to take their time and set at least two class periods aside to produce an infographic.
  16. (Timing 20:00-21:00 mins.) Another use for Piktochart would be to make an infographic in math class to visually display important Math-Calculus terminology. This would be a helpful study tool for students.
  17. (Timing 21:00-22:00mins.) Students in Health 9 class created the infographic above to meet the following standard- Standard 9.1 The student will apply health knowledge and skills to the development and analysis of personal goals to achieve and maintain long-term health and wellness.
  18. (Timing 22-24:00 mins.) Smore is another visual tool that is similar to Piktochart. As with Piktochart, users are required to create an account. This is helpful as it stores your images for you. I did find it difficult to save just the image on my computer, but this would be a great graphic image to save to your blog or website. Creating a Smore is easy. The boxes are easy to use and navigation is simple. Don’t be afraid to make a few for fun before showing your students. Graphic students could use this to create a flyer and meet 8482.041-.048 which pertains to Identifying the Designed World. Marketing students may be inclined to use this tool to meet competency 8110.045 which is to use computer technology and software tools to perform marketing tasks thus making a flyer. Don’t just take my word for it, let’s check out the site.
  19. (Timing 24:00-25:00 mins.) Audio tools have been around for many years. However, these tools are taking on new formats as they are available online and can be embedded or linked to documents, websites or blogs. Perhaps you have students in your class that need a verbal reminder along with a visual reminder of what is due next class. Maybe, you have a student that is on homebound but needs to complete a group project or give feedback on a group project. Audio tools are readily available, they may or may not require creating an account, and can be accessed via smartphones, QR codes, links, or by recording into a microphone. Most laptops have a built in microphone, but you will need to check this out when reserving the laptop cart from your library or IT department.
  20. (Timing 18:00-20:00 mins.) This may be one of the easiest audio tools to use. In Spanish class, students are required to speak Spanish in person to a teacher. These speaking drills can be unnerving for some students. To assist with this graded assignment. Students can use the Vocaroo tool to practice or even turn in vocal assignments to the teacher by saving to an email and then sending to the teacher. Just paste your link into your web browser and your message will play on the Vocaroo player. Other uses may include recording short descriptions of insects for a bug project in Biology I. Another curriculum that would benefit from this tool would be Health and PE. Students could record messages about the myths and dangers of drug abuse and alcohol and then post them to a group discussion board.
  21. (Timing 25:00-27:00 mins.) This is a free tool for students and teachers. As with many other tools, certain options within the application are inaccessible unless you have a paid account. This is not problem though as there are plenty of free avatars to choose from. Anyone can add their voice to their Voki avatar. The Voki can be put on websites, blogs, or profile. This would be a creative way for students to introduce themselves to classmates at the beginning of the year. Creating a blog in English class would be a great way to discuss books, important assignments, and post a “Welcome” message that was created using Voki. This is the site( click on screen shot).
  22. (Timing 27:00-29:00 mins.) My Voki took about one hour to create. I would allow students at least one block period or more to create their Voki. I was able to maneuver around the site fairly well, but it did take me a bit of time to get it just right! My message welcomes all visitors to the library on my webpage. (Click on my link) This is something that any librarian could put on their blog or website. This is great tool for visually impaired students to have access to both as viewer and as a producer. Voki gives you the option of recording your message through your computer microphone, your phone-simply dial a number, or upload an audio file you have already created. (Click Voki)
  23. (Timing 29:00-29:30 mins.) Agriculture students could create different animal Vokis as there are several to choose on the Voki site. Caring for and Managing Cats could be explained with the Cat Voki and could be sent to students at the elementary level to serve as animal how-to.
  24. (Timing 29:30-31:00 mins.) QR codes have many uses. Believe it or not the classroom and library are great places to use these codes. All CTE course competency lists begin with 21 Workplace Readiness Skills. Some CTE areas are Business, Marketing, Graphics, Agriculture, and Family and Consumer Science. Each CTE area will require students to meet this competency in a variety of ways. Business could use a QR code to link to the Federal Reserve, Marketing could make a QR code linking to the latest fashion magazine. QR codes would be helpful in Math as well. Teachers could give students several problems to work on while in class. If students try to figure out a solution, but still have problems, they could refer to a QR code that has the answer to the problem embedded in it. Why would this be helpful? The teacher could make these ahead of time if he/she were unable to teach that day. Students would not have to wait and could get immediate help.
  25. (Timing 31:00-32:00 mins.) Here is an example of a QR code I made on http://www.i-nigma.com/CreateBarcodes.html. I made this code to allow users to scan the code which takes them to the Federal Reserve site.
  26. (Timing 32-33:00 mins.) Like any other school, the library has limits on how many magazines can be bought and put into circulation. This is a great tool that would allow Marketing students to view some of the main articles and front page of Vogue magazine.
  27. (Timing 33:00-34:00 mins.) QR Codes can be used in multiple formats. The first code I have posted at the top is a QR Voice Code that I embedded on my blog. I recorded a greeting about my thoughts on books. The next QR code when scanned will take the user directly to my blog. This use of the QR code can be very useful in regards to linking to websites or directions. This is the tool I used-(click on link above www.i-nigma.com/CreateBarcodes.html)
  28. (Timing 34:00-35:00 mins.) This QR code that I created could be used in the library. This code links students to a review that has been made by another student, staff, or parent. Having book recommendations at your fingertips would certainly broaden the selection process for occasional reader all the way up to students that devour books on a daily basis. One limitation to using this tool is that you need a QR scanner. The app is free, but a device like an iTouch, iPad, or iPhone is needed to scan and view the content of the what is embedded in the code. ( Click and Play the video for only a minute)
  29. (Timing 35:00-37:00 mins.) If you can take pictures, upload them, speak, and then add music, you have just made your first Videolicious video. It really is that simple. One specific requirement is that you have an iPad available to use the app for the least amount of production issues. The free app is only for one minute, but as far as I am concerned, it is a great introduction on how to use an audio/visual tool. This wonderful tool would be a great tool to use in Statistics. Standard AII.12 states that the student will compute and distinguish between permutations and combinations and use technology for applications. 1-Math students could check out flip cameras or take picture of index cards that explain the difference between permutations and combinations. 2-This would also be a great tool for guidance counselors to use for ESL students that are new to the high school. The students could watch a series of short virtual tools in their native language and or any other short videos about policies and procedures.
  30. (Timing 37:00-38:00 mins.) Doesn’t this look delicious? Well, just think how much fun students in Culinary Arts 1 will have not only creating a meal, but making a video about it as well. Watch out school cafeteria, you have some serious competition! One standard that would apply to this idea is Culinary Arts I 8275.061 which states- Read and Follow a recipe.
  31. (Timing 38-45:00mins.) Well, we covered many tools today. I hope most of them made you say “Hmmmm!” As I said in the beginning of this presentation, we as educators must meet the standards and competencies and yet bring relevance and rigor to the assignments and projects we assign to our students. All staff members must meet new evaluation guidelines as determined by the State Board of Education. Under Standard 3 , Competency 6: The teacher uses effective verbal, nonverbal, and media communication techniques to foster positive interactions in the classroom. More specific to librarians are the Core Competencies of Librarianship as written by the ALA, Number 4-Technological Knowledge and Skills. (Empowering Learners, AASL, 2009) Thank you for your time, and please feel free to ask questions now.
