The document discusses LOD2 Deliverable 3.1.1, which will publish a survey of tools concerned with knowledge extraction from structured sources. The data will be collected in a Linked Data and SPARQL enabled OntoWiki to allow for sustainability through crowd-sourcing updates and maintenance. The OntoWiki has been deployed at http://data.lod2.eu/2011/tools/ and will need further fine-tuning over the next several weeks. The data is available as Linked Data or through SPARQL queries at the provided URL.

The Big Data challenge consists in managing, storing, analyzing and visualizing these huge and ever growing data sets to extract sense and knowledge. As the volume of data grows exponentially, the management of these data becomes more complex in proportion.
A key point is to handle the complexity of the 'Data Life Cycle', i.e. the various operations performed on data: transfer, archiving, replication, deletion, etc. Indeed, data-intensive applications span over a large variety of devices and e-infrastructures which implies that many systems are involved in data management and processing.
''Active Data'' is new approach to automate and improve the expressiveness of data management applications. It consists of
* a 'formal model' for Data Life Cycle, based on Petri Net, that allows to describe and expose data life cycle across heterogeneous systems and infrastructures.
* a 'programming model' allows code execution at each stage of the data life cycle: routines provided by programmers are executed when a set of events (creation, replication, transfer, deletion) happen to any data.

It reviews six studies on extraction, including two that examine the Klarity and DC.dot tools. The studies found extraction provides more efficient metadata but still requires human oversight and scoring was around 80% accurate. Standardization in formats and schemas is needed to improve extraction for real-world use.
Crossing the Analytics Chasm and Getting the Models You Developed Deployed
There are two cultures in data science and analytics - those that develop analytic models and those that deploy analytic models into operational systems. In this talk, we review the life cycle of analytic models and provide an overview of some of the approaches that have been developed for managing analytic models and workflows and for deploying them, including using analytic engines and analytic containers . We give a quick overview of languages for analytic models (PMML) and analytic workflows (PFA). We also describe the emerging discipline of AnalyticOps that has borrowed some of the techniques of DevOps.
What is Data Commons and How Can Your Organization Build One?
1. Data commons co-locate large biomedical datasets with cloud computing infrastructure and analysis tools to create shared resources for the research community.
2. The NCI Genomic Data Commons is an example of a data commons that makes over 2.5 petabytes of cancer genomics data available through web portals, APIs, and harmonized analysis pipelines.
3. The Gen3 platform is an open source software stack for building data commons that can interoperate through common APIs and data models to support reproducible, collaborative research across projects.

Linking Scientific Metadata (presented at DC2010)
Linked entity data in metadata records builds a foundation for semantic web. Even though metadata records contain rich entity data, there is no linking between associated entities such as persons, datasets, projects, publications, or organizations. We conducted a small experiment using the dataset collection from the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES), in which we converted the entities and their relationships into RDF triples and linked the URIs contained in RDF triples to the corresponding entities in the Ecological Metadata Language (EML) records. Through the transformation program written in XML Stylesheet Language (XSL), we turned a plain EML record display into an interlinked semantic web of ecological datasets. The experiment suggests a methodological feasibility in incorporating linked entity data into metadata records. The paper also argues for the need of changing the scientific as well as general metadata paradigm.

Research software is a key asset for understanding, reusing and reproducing results in computational sciences. An increasing amount of software is stored in code repositories, which usually contain human readable instructions indicating how to use it and set it up. However, developers and researchers often need to spend a significant amount of time to understand how to invoke a software component, prepare data in the required format, and use it in combination with other software. In addition, this time investment makes it challenging to discover and compare software with similar functionality. In this talk I will describe our efforts to address these issues by creating and using Open Knowledge Graphs that describe research software in a machine readable manner. Our work includes: 1) an ontology that extends schema.org and codemeta, designed to describe software and the specific data formats it uses; 2) an approach to publish software metadata as an open knowledge graph, linked to other Web of Data objects; and 3) a framework for automatically extracting metadata from software repositories; and 4) a framework to curate, query, explore and compare research software metadata in a collaborative manner. The talk will illustrate our approach with real-world examples, including a domain application for inspecting and discovering hydrology, agriculture, and economic software models; and the results of our framework when enriching the research software entries in Zenodo.org.

Linked Data in Linguistics for NLP and Web Annotation
This document discusses leveraging linked open data and semantic web technologies for natural language processing. It describes the output of the "Skunkworks" FAIR implementation group, who were tasked with building a prototype infrastructure that would fulfill the FAIR Principles for scholarly data publishing. We show how a novel combination of the Linked Data Platform, RDF Mapping Language (RML) and Triple Pattern Fragments (TPF) can be combined to create a scholarly publishing infrastructure that is markedly interoperable, at both the metadata and the data level.

Producing, publishing and consuming linked data - CSHALS 2013

The Future of LOD
The current status of Linked Open Data (LOD) shows evidence of many datasets available on the Web in RDF. In the meantime, there are still many challenges to overcome by organizations in their journey of publishing five stars datasets on the Web. Those challenges are not only technical, but are also organizational. At this moment where connectionist AI is gaining a wave of popularity with many applications, LOD needs to go beyond the guarantee of FAIR principles. One direction is to build a sustainable LOD ecosystem with FAIR-S principles. In parallel, LOD should serve as a catalyzer for solving societal issues (LOD for Social Good) and personal empowerment through data (Social Linked Data).
Microtask Crowdsourcing Applications for Linked Data
This document discusses using microtask crowdsourcing to enhance linked data applications. It describes how crowdsourcing can be used in various components of the linked data integration process, including data cleansing, vocabulary mapping, and entity interlinking. Specific crowdsourcing applications and systems are discussed that address tasks like assessing the quality of DBpedia triples, entity linking with ZenCrowd, and understanding natural language queries with CrowdQ. Bio2RDF Release 2 is an updated version that provides improved coverage of life science linked data through additional datasets and properties. It features open source conversion scripts, a common URI pattern for integration, and dataset provenance information. The release includes 19 datasets with over 1 billion RDF triples that can be queried using SPARQL endpoints or through federated queries across datasets using the Semanticscience Integrated Ontology. Future work aims to incorporate additional large datasets and consolidate provenance.

While the Linguistic Linked Open Data (LLOD) Cloud (http://linguistic-lod.org/) has evolved beyond expectations - thanks to the effort of a vibrant community - overall progress has to be seen under a more scrutinizing light.
Initial challenges which have been formulated by Christian Chiarcos, Sebastian Nordhoff and me as early as 2011[1][2] have been discussed extensively in the LDL, MLODE and NLP & DBpedia workshop series and in several W3C community groups. In particular, the LIDER FP7 project (http://www.lider-project.eu/) - originally conceived to tackle these challenges and build a Linguistic Linked Open Data Cloud - rather gave them more shape and uncovered that there is yet quite a long road ahead to solve problems such as proper metadata, contextualisation of knowledge, data quality, hosting, open licensing and provenance, timely updated network links, knowledge integration and interoperability on the largest possible scale - the Web.
The invited talk attempts to give a full account of these abovementioned challenges and presents and critically evaluates pertinent efforts and approaches including evolving standards such as the NLP Interchange Format (NIF)[3][4], DataID[5], SHACL[6], lemon[7] and the LIDER guidelines[8] as well as practical services such as LingHub[9], LODVader[10], RDFUnit[11] (just to mention a few).
As a glimmer of hope, the talk will conclude with the recent efforts of the DBpedia community to coordinate the creation of a public data infrastructure for a large, multilingual, semantic knowledge graph, which is, of course, not a panacean golden hammer, but a potential step in the right direction to bridge the gap between language and knowledge.
