This presentation is very much focused on our model, and while only half way through the current year's program, we are already seeing great things as:
1) the course actively engages student concerns, and supports them as they develop a business case for change
2) The course is not an elective, but is part of the core curriculum (i.e. required for graduation), and integrates with other core topics (finance, operations, marketing, etc)

Agroecology and Extension - the case of 'Green Extension' in Lao PDRlaos case
Green Extension (GE) is an agroecological approach to rural advisory services endorsed by Lao PDR's Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. GE was developed by the Lao Upland Rural Advisory Service and builds on 20 years of cooperation between the extension department and Helvetas. GE supports farmers' socio-ecological learning through participatory action research, farmer field schools, and farmer-to-farmer exchanges to test and adapt sustainable agriculture practices suited to local conditions. The key is creating, sharing, and applying local knowledge through a learning process where farmers actively generate and share knowledge. Care Group Operations Research in Burundi and Niger_Jennifer Weiss_4.23.13
This document summarizes operations research being conducted on Care Group models in Burundi and Niger. In Burundi, the research is comparing a traditional Care Group model to an integrated model where community health workers and health facility staff are more involved in training and supervision. Preliminary results show both models achieve similar improvements in knowledge and functionality. The integrated model shows potential for improved sustainability. In Niger, the research is assessing whether Care Group leader mothers can deliver integrated community case management of common childhood illnesses. Formative research found the community is receptive and training tools are being developed. The overall goal is to test innovative Care Group approaches that can be adopted within existing health systems.
Cultivating Children's CIT

The Beyond School Walls program is a workplace mentoring partnership between local businesses and career academy students managed by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Florida. Students are transported monthly to business sites to meet with mentors and learn about the industry, earning certifications to enhance opportunities after graduation. A match support specialist monitors mentor-student relationships and ensures classroom learning aligns with workplace exposure. In 2012-13, six partnerships served 252 students, of which 97.5% regularly attended school, 97% had no suspensions or referrals, and 96% were promoted.
Systematic Literature Reviews Health Information Management Journal
There is a need to enhance the effectiveness and reach of complex health promotion initiatives by providing opportunities for diverse health promotion practitioners and others to interact in online settings. This paper reviews the existing literature on how to take health promotion communities and networks into online settings. A scoping review of relevant bodies of literature and empirical evidence was undertaken to provide an interpretive synthesis of existing knowledge on the topic. Sixteen studies were identified between 1986 and 2007. Relatively little research has been conducted on the process of taking existing offl ine communities and networks into online settings. However, more research has focused on offline (i.e. not mediated via computer networks); ‘virtual’ (purely online with no offl ine interpersonal contact); and ‘multiplex’ communities (i.e. those that interact across both online and offl ine settings). Results are summarised under three themes: characteristics of communities in online and offl ine settings; issues in moving offl ine communities online, and designing online communities to match community needs. Existing health promotion initiatives can benefit from online platforms that promote community building and knowledge sharing. Online ehealth promotion settings and communities can successfully integrate with existing offl ine settings and communities to form ‘multiplex’ communities (i.e. communities that operate fl uently across both online and offl ine settings).

Buildings account for 40% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Improving the energy efficiency of existing buildings through programs like LEED's EBOM can significantly reduce emissions. HKU's CYC and TTT building retrofit project in Hong Kong demonstrated energy savings of 30-33% through upgrades like HVAC and lighting improvements. However, achieving the certification required demonstrating actual performance, which depends on organizational support and user behaviors. EBOM projects can be challenging but provide lessons for improving building operations and sustainability efforts in China and Asia.
ISCN 2016: Session 1: Food Sustainability at the Micro and Macro Level
Climate change impacts global food security in four key ways: availability, access, utilization, and stability. It threatens to reduce average yields and increase yield variability. The global population is growing while incomes are rising, increasing demand for resource-intensive Western diets. Achieving sustainable agriculture requires intensifying production on existing lands to avoid converting more natural areas while understanding sustainability is complex with no single approach. Spatially, landscapes must be designed smarter to provide multiple goods. Changing diets and reducing food loss and waste can help create more space for sustainability. Significant challenges require increased investment in research and social change.
ISCN 2016: IARU Overview
The IARU Sustainable Campus Initiative is a collaboration between 11 major universities, including the University of Copenhagen, UC Berkeley, and Cambridge, to provide leadership in sustainability. Through research initiatives, student exchanges, workshops, and guidelines, the Initiative aims to illuminate pathways to a more sustainable future and support sustainability globally. ISCN 2016: Student Leadership Award Winner
The Sustainability Week is the largest student-run sustainability event in Switzerland. It brings over 120 sustainability events and over 10,000 visitors to the five universities each year. The goals are to raise awareness of sustainability issues among students, set concrete sustainability demands for the universities, and connect the universities. In 2016 it engaged over 4,000 visitors and led to achievements like a new minor in environmental studies and a vegan cafeteria. It is organized democratically and sustainably by students with support from university departments and the Swiss Student Union.

Surveying: Object Principles & Types of Surveying; Site Plans, Plans & Maps; Scales & Unit of different Measurements.
Linear Measurements: Instruments used. Linear Measurement by Tape, Ranging out Survey Lines and overcoming Obstructions; Measurements on sloping ground; Tape corrections, conventional symbols. Angular Measurements: Instruments used; Introduction to Compass Surveying, Bearings and Longitude & Latitude of a Line, Introduction to total station.
Levelling: Instrument used Object of levelling, Methods of levelling in brief, and Contour maps.
Chapter 4
Buildings: Selection of site for Buildings, Layout of Building Plan, Types of buildings, Plinth area, carpet area, floor space index, Introduction to building byelaws, concept of sun light & ventilation. Components of Buildings & their functions, Basic concept of R.C.C., Introduction to types of foundation
Chapter 5
Transportation: Introduction to Transportation Engineering; Traffic and Road Safety: Types and Characteristics of Various Modes of Transportation; Various Road Traffic Signs, Causes of Accidents and Road Safety Measures.
Chapter 6
Environmental Engineering: Environmental Pollution, Environmental Acts and Regulations, Functional Concepts of Ecology, Basics of Species, Biodiversity, Ecosystem, Hydrological Cycle; Chemical Cycles: Carbon, Nitrogen & Phosphorus; Energy Flow in Ecosystems.
Water Pollution: Water Quality standards, Introduction to Treatment & Disposal of Waste Water. Reuse and Saving of Water, Rain Water Harvesting. Solid Waste Management: Classification of Solid Waste, Collection, Transportation and Disposal of Solid. Recycling of Solid Waste: Energy Recovery, Sanitary Landfill, On-Site Sanitation. Air & Noise Pollution: Primary and Secondary air pollutants, Harmful effects of Air Pollution, Control of Air Pollution. .
