Windows Embedded 8 Handheld is a new operating system designed for ruggedized handheld devices. It is based on Windows Phone 8 and aims to address limitations of the previous Windows Embedded Handheld 6.5 platform. The new OS will provide longer support for newer hardware, be more customizable for business needs, and better integrate with existing infrastructure. The SDK was released in December 2013 and key partners like Panasonic have announced support. Developers can obtain the SDK online and use it to build applications utilizing features like point of sale functionality.
