Executive Function disabilities are common in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Working around them requires specific strategies that build on strengths, differing from how "most people" do tasks, to be successful. Visual supports and relatively low cost, low tech, environmental modifications can contribute to successful independent functioning through the lifespan. Executive Function disabilities are common in ASD. Working around them requires specific strategies that build on strengths, differing from how "most people" do tasks, to be successful. The two presenters of this session are adults on the spectrum, and both have limited incomes. One of us is a young adult, living on her own, working and attending University. The other is the parent-financial, medical, educational and social coordinator for a family of three, all on spectrum, who previously was the household coordinator of a family of six. The four older kids, all of whom have significant Autistic characteristics, are now out and on their own.
A variety of visual supports can contribute to successful independent functioning through the lifespan. It is unfortunate that so many providers and parents believe visual schedules and charts to be applicable to only young children, as they are useful for anyone. This is why consultants earn huge sums developing timelines and other visuals for corporate and governmental America. For many people on the spectrum, visuals are crucial, for out of sight truly is out of mind. Because of our own experiences and situations, we emphasize relatively low cost, low tech, environmental modifications. We also define success in a manner that does not hold people to unattainable guidelines, as that is counterproductive to functioning in the real world.

A smart goals template is a means to scientifically layout and track your plan with precision.
There is a plethora of information pertaining to this topic, so I will try and make it specific and practical.

To begin and well before the smart goals template is created one must be sure that the project or purpose for the goal is solid.
This means an examination or inventory of who you are, what you are, and why you are. Some insight to this here. [Ref Project Mayhem]
So let’s assume that part is behind you. Here’s a short story.
In 1979 I came to the US, by 1982 I had my first opportunity as a line manager.

The era was that of the “One Minute Manager” [Ref One Minute Manager Video With Ken Blanchard] and “Thriving on Chaos”.

If you have an individual or a group of individuals and they are not well managed or supervised their attitude towards a task will be…..
….approached based upon:
• The work ethic of the individual.
• His/her morals, meaning what is it can I get away with today.[Based on the notion that people are basically lazy]
• The extent that he/she believes someone is watching their movements. [The cat is away, the mouse will play]
The One Minute Manager cites the example where the above occurred, but then also cites what occurred when the individual was challenged.
“So Bill, how long does it take to make one of these widgets?” Bill replies “oh about 10 minutes”.
Bill is half way through his shift, he has worked four hours. There are fifteen widgets completed. “So Bill, you have worked four hours and you have fifteen widgets completed, 15 x 10 = 150 minutes = 2-1/2 hours work, what did you do for the other 1-1/2 hours?”

Time is never on your side, but that shouldn’t stop you from making more with less, that way you can choose how you want to spend your time rather than be in a position where you have to do something, which is not good as an entrepreneur.
Tip 1.
Do something where you are not paid for your time.
People get caught up in the concept of an hourly rate, this is a way to try and commoditise you but this is a very silly way to buy or sell. For example what I can do in an hour is very different to what other people can do, in an hour of my time on marketing or entrepreneurial strategy I can deliver serious value but in other areas I’m just not, “a good fit’ for example DIY, yes I can do it and if I have to I’m neat and tidy, but I’m not fast and so my productivity is low. By the way I don’t enjoy DIY so don’t even ask, in fact a good friend of mine who’s an electrician jokes that I try and fix everything with a hammer which is not far from the truth in some circumstances.
Do what you do well and put a value on the job, not the hours, this way you can work less and earn more.
Tip 2.
Don’t tray and do too much
People make the mistake of getting organised by using a list, which is on a basic level fine, but when the list gets long the chances are it will actually slow you down and cause you to procrastinate. I find the best possible way to manage things is to set out a “To Do List” of no more than three things at a time and base these things on what I can deliver on fast, then create a new list.
Now I get that it’s not always this straight forward but you will be surprise that if you use a simple, list of only 3 things and block out as many other distractions until they are done, like email and phone calls, then you really do much more in less time and this means you work less and earn more.
Tip 3.
Stop focusing success and start defining desired outcomes
If you set yourself a goal or specific set of criteria that define success or failure then you are likely to get frustrated and disheartened from time to time. What I like to do is set a desired outcome and look at small results as I move towards that outcome, let me give you and example relative to working less and earning more.
If you have a customer and they have an expectation based goals or a specific set of success criteria it will be hard to measure the true value of something, for example if you set out a budget for Facebook Ads and your goal is 1,000 new leads in the next 7 days then this is good in so much as you have metrics and a deadline, but it’s far from serving your customer well.

- 1. Thrive not Survive Helping people with anxiety and limited focus to enjoy and succeed in the workplace
- 2. What were the issues that you used to experience in your work role? Problems organising thoughts and tasks. There is an IT based work tracking system, but I can’t use it. I can’t manage the tasks on the system to know what to do next. Jamie works at The Accessibility Group
- 3. Which OurBoards product are you using? The Worries Board Nathan works at The Accessibility Group
- 4. How are you using the board? I use the little blue stickers for thoughts and the larger orange stickers, that I borrowed from someone else in the office, for tasks. Some of the blue stickers are for things that I’m worrying about but they’re also for things that I’m just thinking about.
- 5. When I’m worried or thinking about something I write it on a blue sticker and then leave it for an hour. When I come back to it, I decide where to place it. I use the “things for the future” circle for questions that I can’t answer now or when I’m waiting for an answer from someone else.
- 6. I open the work tracker and take the tasks and write them on the orange stickers. I then put the stickers in “things I can do something about”, “things I can’t do” and “things for the future”. I do the ones in the “things I can do something about” circle then when I finish the task, I take the sticker off and write it in the corner of the board to show what I’ve done.
- 7. I also use green, orange and red stickers as mood stickers. I put the green one on my desk if I’m OK to chat about life generally and be interrupted, the orange sticker if I’m ok to talk about work and the red sticker if I need some time. The others in the workplace know the system and respect it.
- 8. How has it affected the way that you do your work? I’m less anxious because I can see what tasks I have to do, what things I’m thinking about and what I’ve done.
- 9. If I can’t see that I’ve finished anything I worry that I have to keep working. Now that I can see when I done tasks, I’m happier.
- 10. I can see what tasks need to be done each day so I get more things finished. I’m more productive.
- 11. OurBoards personal planning boards, worries boards and support worker services can be funded through the UK Government Access to Work scheme.
