1. Three Passovers Presented
in Scripture
Introduction:
1Cor 5:7
5Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye
may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For
even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:
The Passover lamb shows us:
An innocent lamb is the only substitute
that will protect a person from the wrath
of God (Mat 20:28).
Matt 20:28
20Even as the Son of man came not to be
ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his
life a ransom for many.
2. Innocent blood had to be shed, as well as
applied.
The lamb was to be eaten. Christ is the
daily food of the believer’s soul.
No one could move till they had
consumed the Passover meal. The
believer is to be filled with The Word of
God before he is ready to walk through
the wilderness.
Exod 12:11 And thus shall ye eat it; with
your loins girded, your shoes on your feet,
and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it
in haste: it is the LORD'S passover.
Matt 20:28
3. 20Even as the Son of man came not to be
ministered unto, but to minister, and to give
his life a ransom for many.
A Christian is redeemed from the bondage
of his sins at a price. -No one goes free
merely by the mercy of God- The price
had to be paid.
(Matt 20:28) …to give his life a ransom for
many
“Who receives the ransom?” Not Satan. Satan
has no rights. It was paid to God- the Judge
of all the earth.
Gen 18:25 …Shall not the Judge of all the earth
do right?
The sacrifice of the Lamb of God:
4. vindicated the wrath of God
satisfied the demand of the law
and makes mercy possible.
The result of the Passover is redemption from
bondage. Man is no longer a slave to a
satanic taskmaster.
Three Passovers stand out in the scripture as
a beacon of hope.
Ex. 12 the Passover that gave birth to Israel as
a nation.
Mat 20:28 the Passover that offers the New
Birth to a Believer.
2King 23 the Passover that Proves the Power
of a Changed life.
5. Passover was held every year; But the purpose was
not freedom from Pharaoh- there must be more to
Passover than just Salvation for a Christian.
Paul uses the Passover to provoke the Church to live
a pure life, much like Josiah’s experience.
1Cor 5:6-8
6Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a
little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?
7Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye
may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For
even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:
8Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old
leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and
wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of
sincerity and truth.
I. Provocation of Passover 2Kgs 22:11
6. 2Kgs 22:8 And Hilkiah the high priest said
unto Shaphan the scribe, I have found the
book of the law in the house of the LORD.
And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan, and
he read it.
2Kgs 22:11 And it came to pass, when the
king had heard the words of the book of the
law, that he rent his clothes.
2Kgs 22:13 Go ye, enquire of the LORD for
me, and for the people, and for all Judah,
concerning the words of this book that is
found: for great is the wrath of the LORD
that is kindled against us, because our
fathers have not hearkened unto the words of
this book, to do according unto all that which
is written concerning us.
2Kgs 22:16 Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I
will bring evil upon this place, and upon the
7. inhabitants thereof, even all the words of the
book which the king of Judah hath read:
2Kgs 22:19 Because thine heart was tender,
and thou hast humbled thyself before the
LORD, when thou heardest what I spake
against this place, and against the inhabitants
thereof, that they should become a
desolation and a curse, and hast rent thy
clothes, and wept before me; I also have
heard thee, saith the LORD.
II. Preparation of Passover
A. Declaration- 2Kgs 23:1-2
1 And the king sent, and they gathered unto
him all the elders of Judah and of Jerusalem.
2 And the king went up into the house of the
LORD, and all the men of Judah and all the
inhabitants of Jerusalem with him, and the
8. priests, and the prophets, and all the people,
both small and great: and he read in their
ears all the words of the book of the
covenant which was found in the house of the
LORD.
B. Dedication- 2Kngs 23:3
3 And the king stood by a pillar, and made a
covenant before the LORD, to walk after the
LORD, and to keep his commandments and his
testimonies and his statutes with all their heart
and all their soul, to perform the words of this
covenant that were written in this book. And all
the people stood to the covenant.
C. Demonstration- 2Kgs 23:4, 15
2Kgs 23:4 And the king commanded Hilkiah
the high priest, and the priests of the second
order, and the keepers of the door, to bring
9. forth out of the temple of the LORD all the
vessels that were made for Baal, and for the
grove, and for all the host of heaven: and he
burned them without Jerusalem in the fields of
Kidron, and carried the ashes of them unto
Bethel.
2Kgs 23:15 Moreover the altar that was at
Bethel, and the high place which Jeroboam the
son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin, had
made, both that altar and the high place he
brake down, and burned the high place, and
stamped it small to powder, and burned the
grove.
III. Power of Passover 2Kgs 23:21-25
10. A. Exercise of Purification
Exercise is not a destination but a
perpetual practice.
2Kgs 23:21-25 21 And the king commanded
all the people, saying, Keep the passover unto
the LORD your God, as it is written in the book
of this covenant.
22 Surely there was not holden such a passover
from the days of the judges that judged Israel,
nor in all the days of the kings of Israel, nor of
the kings of Judah;
23 But in the eighteenth year of king Josiah,
wherein this passover was holden to the LORD
in Jerusalem.
24 Moreover the workers with familiar spirits,
and the wizards, and the images, and the idols,
and all the abominations that were spied in
the land of Judah and in Jerusalem, did Josiah
put away, that he might perform the words
of the law which were written in the book that
11. Hilkiah the priest found in the house of the
LORD.
25 And like unto him was there no king before
him, that turned to the LORD with all his
heart, and with all his soul, and with all his
might, according to all the law of Moses;
neither after him arose there any like him.
B. Escape from Wrath
Heb 11:27-28
27 By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the
wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing
him who is invisible.
28 Through faith he kept the passover, and
the sprinkling of blood, lest he that destroyed
the firstborn should touch them.
12. IV. Conclusion John 19-15
Passover required great preparation.
One day the Passover Lamb will sit in
judgment of your preparation.
John 19:12-15
12 And from thenceforth Pilate sought to
release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If
thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar's
friend: whosoever maketh himself a king
speaketh against Caesar.
13 When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he
brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the
judgment seat in a place that is called the
Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha.
14 And it was the preparation of the
passover, and about the sixth hour: and he
saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!
13. 15 But they cried out, Away with him, away with
him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I
crucify your King? The chief priests answered,
We have no king but Caesar.
Rev 5:6 And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst
of the throne and of the four beasts, and in
the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it
had been slain, having seven horns and
seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of
God sent forth into all the earth.
Zech 4:10 For who hath despised the day of
small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall
see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel
with those seven; they are the eyes of the
LORD, which run to and fro through the
whole earth.
14. Mark 14:23-25
23And he took the cup, and when he had given
thanks, he gave it to them: and they all drank of
it.
24And he said unto them, This is my blood of
the new testament, which is shed for many.
25Verily I say unto you, I will drink no more of
the fruit of the vine, until that day that I drink
it new in the kingdom of God.
How are your preparations for Passover
future going?
