Media Studies Evaluation Sunpreet Mashiana
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? At the beginning there was powerful music used. This is generally used in news channels and documentaries. This connotes the powerful presence of the news and the effect it has on the world. An example is BBC News and the commanding voice it has on its viewers. The presenter is shown to be wearing a suit which shows realism and professionalism in the documentary. This shows a positive effect on viewers and the smartness. An example is shown in Tonight with Trevor McDonald where Trevor McDonald is wearing a suit. In the documentary there were also four interviews taken. Interviews are conventions for documentaries as there is information coming from another’s point of view. So interviews are an advantage in a documentary. At the beginning there were some establishing shots around the royal town of Windsor. These shots just connote the royalty involved in the town as they are of Queen Victoria’s statue and the flag of sovereignty .
How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts ? There are many differences between my main product and ancillary texts. They are that my main product which is a documentary can be seen and viewers can understand what the subject is about. My ancillary texts which are newspaper and radio advertisements are different in a way. The newspaper advert would need a lot of thinking to just understand what the subject is about and it is just a still image so it would be harder to understand. But a radio advert would be quite easy to understand because of the message it is giving out but there is no image to it and you cannot see nothing, only hear.
What have you learned from your audience feedback? From the audiences who have watched the documentary they have all thought it was a bit slow. And the tempo is a bit slow compared to other documentaries. I have learnt that in future if I was making another documentary I am to quicken the tempo by putting in some more exciting and upbeat music and to take less establishing shots of the town. This way the documentary would be better and I have learnt something from the audience feedback.
How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages ? My main media technology I had used throughout this coursework was a computer. Through the construction stages I had been using a Apple Macbook editing the documentary using Final Cut Express. I had also used the Macbook to pick my the music for the documentary and to do my ancillary tasks which were a radio advertisement and a newspaper advertisement. Through the research and planning stages I had used my blog. I had done my research and planning beforehand and uploaded it on to the blog where all my planning resources are. This had made it easier for me as all of the correct resources were on one site with a lot of videos and pictures making it a visual blog. And through the evaluation stages I had been recorded whilst answering the evaluation questions. This is an efficient way of evaluating our coursework and it shows the professionalism in my work.
Thank You
