Thomas Jefferson was born in 1743 in Virginia and had a large family. He received his early education through private tutors before attending the College of William and Mary. Jefferson later became a lawyer and was elected as a burgess in Virginia. He wrote the Declaration of Independence and served as the third President of the United States from 1800 to 1809. During his career, Jefferson made important accomplishments such as authoring the Declaration of Independence, making the Louisiana Purchase to double the size of the U.S., and founding the University of Virginia.
