1. THIS IS A POWERPOINT. Hello! This is a power point about the places and attractions of the United Kingdom. Specifically, the places in Britain. There is also information about the traditional foods, customs, and facts about the country.

2. Stonehenge is one of the greatest mysteries in the world today. It is a formation of rocks, and no one knows how this strange place came to be. Stonehenge is not only a scientific place to visit, but attracts many average tourists as well. It is said that Stonehenge has very clear and loud acoustics.

3. The westminster abbey is over a thousand years old. Many memorable monarchs have been buried there, and it is a very complex and beautiful building. The structure is decorated with paintings, stained glass, pavings, textiles and other artifacts.

4. The London eye is the highest observation tower in the world. From the top of the wheel, it’s possible to see 55 of London’s greatest attractions!

5. Big Ben is the commonly used name for the clock tower at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London. Even though the tower was finished being built in 1858, the famous clock is still keeping time to this day.

6. Foods of England: Fish and Chips Fish and chips are a common take-away dish of the United Kingdom. The first official fish and chip shop was recorded to have opened up in 1860, by a proprietor named Joseph Malin. He claimed to “fry fish in the Jewish fashion” . The version of English chips are different from the American ones; the chips of America are very thin and salted potato slices, while the English version appear like American french fries that are thick-cut.

7. Foods of England: Yorkshire Pudding While many Americans think of a chocolate mixture in a snack cup as pudding, the Yorkshire Pudding is a very different dish. Yorkshire pudding’s batter is made of the fat that drips from a meat when being cooked. This batter was usually called ‘dripping pudding’. Many people started to use this batter to make pancakes, which in turn became so delicious that it soon turned into one of the most popular dishes in England. It is usually served with meat and vegetables.

8. Foods of England: Toad in the hole Toad in the hole is a dish made of sausages baked in yorkshire pudding batter, which is best served with onion gravy or vegetables. Its name is very strange, and there is a dispute over where the name originated from.

9. Holidays in England Spring Bank is a holiday celebrated throughout the UK. It has the same premise as Labor Day, but takes place on the last monday of May. Boxing Day is a holiday on the 26 th of December. The original tradition of the holiday was for this day to be a day of giving; to help the poor and those around them. To this day, that tradition is being upheld, but the holiday is turning very commercial. Boxing Day is very much like Black Friday in America, and there are also many sports that are broadcasted on the day, including the English variation of Football, and rugby.

10. RUGBY Rugby is a very European sport, especially popular in England where it originated. Rugby is usually played in upper and middle class schools, on teams. This sport is physically violent, and results in many injuries.

11. Government of England England is much different from the other countries making up the UK, when considering their governance. Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland all have separate governments, but England is under the jurisdiction of the Parliament of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. There has been no successfully created government for England so far.

12. Queen of England Elizabeth the second is the current queen of England. She was made queen on February 6, 1952. Her full name (at birth) is Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor.

13. Languages 95% of the UK speaks English, although it is not their official language. 30% of England uses the British Sign Language, or BSL for short. Just as British English is different from American English, BSL is different than ASL.

14. Education Schools in England are almost similar to the ones in America. Instead of elementary, middle, and high schools, there are primary and secondary schools. What is normally called “Pre K” in America is called “Nursery” in England. The amount of children that go to state run schools (public schools) is 93%. The rest of the percentage go to faith schools or boarding schools.

15. Weather The weather in England is very controlled, and usually stays around the 40’s to the 70’s (degrees Fahrenheit.)

16. Music: The British Invasion The British Invasion was a point in time, starting in the 1960’s with The Beatles. Bands from this region were already extremely popular in the United Kingdom, and soon their music played through the American airwaves. Two of the most popular bands were The Beatles , and The Rolling Stones . Many people often use the codename “Beatlemania” instead of TBI.
