between the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea.
• Total land area of 244,100 square kilometres. From north to
south it is about 1,000 kilometres long
States and territories of United
Kingdom
• The United Kingdom is made up of:
• England- The capital is London.
• Scotland - The capital is Edinburgh .
• Wales - The capital is Cardiff.
• Northern Ireland - The capital is Belfast.
England, Scotland and Wales together form Great Britain.
• Great Britain and Northern Ireland together
form the "United Kingdom of Great Britain and
Northern Ireland" (UK)
Weather and the seasons
• United Kingdom's seasons follow the sequence:
▫ Summer: June to August
▫ Autumn: September to November
▫ Winter: December to February
▫ Spring: March to May
• It rains a lot in United Kingdom, and it can be cloudy. The
weather is unpredictable though its rarely extreme. The rain
doesn’t come all in one season – it can come at any time of
the year, and on any day. You might experience beautiful
sunshine, blustering winds and drizzling rain – all in one
afternoon!
People
• British people live in the UK. They are people who live in England, Scotland,
Wales or Northern Ireland.
• British people can also either be English, Scottish, Welsh, or Irish (from
Northern Ireland only).
• The British are said to be reserved in manners, dress and speech. They are
famous for their politeness, self-discipline and especially for their sense of
humour.
• British people have a strong sense of humour which sometimes can be hard for
foreigners to understand.
• Britain is a country of mixed cultures. London has the largest non-white
population of any European city and over 250 languages are spoken there.
• Therefore not all British people are White or Christians

beans and mushrooms

• Tennis: Wimbledon
– Traditionally, visitors eat strawberries and cream while watching the game
brought to Britain from India in the 19th Century by army officers
• Boxing Day Hunts: Traditionally it is a day for fox hunting
– Boxing Day is the following day after Christmas Day
Language
• The main language in the UK is, of course, English, which is spoken throughout the whole
country.
• In Wales, some people still speak Welsh; however, since all Welsh people also speak
English, you only need to speak English anywhere in the UK.
• For such a relatively small country, there are a lot of dialects in the UK, and some of them
can be hard to understand, even for English people.
UK dialects include:
1. Cockney - probably the most famous and generally attributed to people from
London
2. Brummy - people from Birmingham
3. Mancunian - people from Manchester
4. West Country - people from Devon, Cornwall and Bristol area
