I believe there is something behind to be told within the three words – The True Fake.
“Adaptability is the Simple Secret of Survival” Jessica Hagedorn.
Being something to survive in the 21st
sanctuary is as hard as you could notice. Things are not
meant to be last longer. People are seeking for the latest version of things, materials. Avaricious.
This is what driven the world today – UPDATES.
Yes, it is confusing to choose either to be truly true of to be truly fake. Being truly true is a problem.
By taking architecture as an example, building up a shopping mall at this moment in the 21st
sanctuary in any place with its form driven by its purpose and built-up rigidly followed by
practicality, you cannot expect this building is going to last forever to show itself as a symbol of
its existence in this place. Sania Mirza, an Indian Tennis Player said once: ‘As tennis players, you
are never satisfied. We are greedy as players, always want better results.’ People want things to
be always better than the original one, or either to be demolished in the future, or replace by
something else. As long as something is editable and not meant to be permanent, we would want
it always new. This is human.
Being truly fake has its authenticity problem, but it cannot be undone. See, to prevent itself from
becoming the dead in a place, it has to adapt itself to stay alive. By taking architecture as an
example again, I believe Rogers’ designed building, Lloyd’s Building is designed based on this
idea ‘improvisation and change’. Like the Lloyd’s building: The rebuilt of the headquarters were
done twice because the business outgrew the building in which it was house. If this had not been
done, I believe the building itself would be abandoned for now. Therefore, adaptability plays an
important part in architecture.
Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, presenting herself as an international brand of herself –
Lady Gaga, trying to adapt herself as much as she could in the market and in the world. From
2008 to 2020, she brought herself to the TV screens always in the new look, started as a pop
culture stratosphere with the nickname ‘Little Monster’ then slowly presented herself as the diva
that shine in her own way. Adapt and fit herself into the society in maximum acceptability. The
true fake in here, presenting Lady Gaga as a high adaptability person, packaging herself to the
public to show the meaning of her albums and songs, she survived in the way of her life and
career.
No matter what it is, either architecture or as a human, adaptability is indeed important in life. It is
the key to survive, a key to stay forever. Perhaps this is the only way to make a meaningful story
in our life until the very last breathe.
THINK SHEET 4 by Chai Phey Chiat, David 0334480
Perceiving an object as a whole or perceiving an object from the individual parts, the reader strikes
me with an equation:
WHOLE ≠ SUM OF PARTS
‘The Whole is Greater than the Sum of its Parts’, which this was first coined by philosopher
Aristotle, is defined to perceive things as a while rather than individual parts as the combination
of the parts add a different quality. Therefore, the whole is not equal to the sum of the parts.
It is true that when Farnsworth House by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe is compared to the Glass
House by Philip Johnson. To perceive them as a whole, they are almost the same, yes. Copy,
that is what people said. Of course the original idea was from Lugwig Mies van der Rohe as told
by Philip Johnson. You see, idea is one of the parts from the design of the two buildings. To be
precise, when we talk about the sum of the parts for each of the two buildings, no, they are
different, and they look very different from one another. As told, only one particular thing is the
same – Idea, but it cannot be seen physically from two solids.
It reminds me of the books that are hot selling in the bookstores: Diary of the Wimpy Kid by Jeff
Kinney and Dork Diaries by Rachel Renee Russell. As a whole they look the same: Colourful
hardcovers, the way they tell the stories to the readers with words and drawings, etc. They look
exactly the same. War that is happening in the social media, fighting that which one is the
original. But they appeared to be so different in details: Diary of the Wimpy Kid is about the
everyday life of a boy, but Dork Diaries is about the everyday life of a girl. The idea is the same,
but the content is different. Where you can see the way of deliveries and the drawings are
different from one another.
By bringing the equation and the idea to everyday life and for those people who look exactly
almost the same, they are actually different if we observe them in detail. This reminds me of the
movie called ‘Gattaca’, where Vincent Freeman looks almost the same as Jerome Morrow, or
exactly the same in front of all, but this is only applicable if we perceive things as a whole. By
looking into detail, nothing looks exactly the same as if they are compared side by side, where
the DNA or the traits are different for all and that is the thing that makes people look different.
It can be seen that either to perceive things as a whole or to perceive things as in the sum of the
parts, are different from one another. It is always the idea behind that supports the things that
we see, and it is always we people, for most of us, putting everything as a whole as we see
things. Single perspective. It cannot be blamed as people first see things in a whole. But if we
look at things part by part, guess the whole meaning will be different from its whole.

Believe.
The reader evokes me the idea ‘believe’. If we do not believe these things are actually influential,
then this book (the reader) would not be existed too.
Our brain always takes a mental shortcut to think and believe things. For example, the meals with
the recipes that are nicely arranged and easy-to-read fonts are deemed and are believed as they
are easier to be made when compared to the recipes that are written in another way round.
Fluency is the thing, and the effect of processing it on how we look at the world is very powerful.
It is true that: The better the ‘fluency’ is, the less that people judge it, the more prevalent we
believe it is, the easier the people think it is. It matters how the same thing is presented to the
people. Let us see two examples here:
1. We only use 10 percent of our brain
2. If you swallow a chewing gum, it will stay in your system for seven years.
The statements look true. In fact, if I were to tell you these statements are true, you would believe
that they are true too before you search the reasons behind from reliable resources. But those
are not. We are more likely to believe statements that are easier to be processed. And it has been
found out that if we are exposed to something repeatedly, it is more likely to believe that the
something is true. Just like what were written in the book, but we believe most of the things are
true and believe that they have brought an impact to us.
To believe something means it is acceptable by the public too. Beliefs are influential, they affect
one and another, like we have no evidence on any of the history too. Empirical knowledge, also
known as scientific knowledge, is the only one of the other knowledges that is filled and involved
in evidence. Let us put ourselves into this: nobody has actually been to the Jurassic Period to
really look at the existence of the dinasour and we actually believe that the dinasour did exist
before we were born in the world. All of these had not been proved with real evidence. In fact,
those scientific knowledges are only using the evidence to falsify. If they could not falsify a certain
hypothesis, we just assume it is much more likely to be true. So this is when people started to
believe dinasours are real as there is no evidence to think that it is false, or fake.
It is all depending to our own view either to believe a thing or not, but, for me, I believe that
everything that all other people believe has its own reason behind and the meaning too. To
proceed with something means he or she believes something that is existed in his or her life.
Since there are so many influential stories and beliefs in this world, no harm too if we believe
some of them in our life, since we are picking up the values within the stories, trying to make
ourselves better, and have something to go in our life.
THINK SHEET 6 by Chai Phey Chiat, David 0334480
Everything in this world has its life, they born and die.
Time.
It is the matter of time that everything born and die within a period no matter if it is a living or non-
living thing. It is always the ‘trend’ that act as a new layer that submerge the so-called ‘old’ layers.
How does this happen? This shall be first looking towards human behavior.
It is interesting that your brain will tell you that something is outdated or looks old, as this is a sign
of your life asking you to look for something new, interesting, like experiences. When things
started to stop at a certain stage, they started to look boring, outdated, and old. As a human, we
always look forward something that is new and we perceive a non-updated thing as something
that is boring, and most of the time, lack of interest towards those things. It is true that different
people have different period of time to feel bored about something but, that something soon will
be outdated. Still, it is the matter of time.
From the book itself it talks about the evolution of architecture from time to time, and we can see
that it is the ‘current trend’ that slowly engulf the physical appearance of the history. Why the
evolution occurs has turned to be the question. Human behavior turns to be the one to blame for
things to occur, but it is all about time. Human is just another factor that aided to the evolution
where no single force like human behavior can cause the reactions to happen.
Invisible Cities, a book by Italo Calvino is not a book talking just about the cities that cannot be
seen or talking just about architecture. The stories talked about the value that the time and place
resulted and caused the human to change their way of view to look at things, where most of the
stories presented that the human are unsatisfied with their current life and decided to make a
change to improve the current situation. From here, you see, time acts as the movement that
causes things to change. If time is not moving, everything in this world will turn to be static.
Therefore, time causes a thing to change instead of making a thing static. From this book, also, it
can be seen that the cities have a life that they born and die within a period of time, where new
things keep coming in to cover up those old and outdated buildings within the city.
Of all the things happened in this world, I believe there is a force that causes a thing to change.
It is the time, that created a lot of opportunity to transform a thing, even our thoughts could be
changed too after some time. Perhaps time is the universal power to make things happen, and
human is the factor that causes a change. It is also the power of time to determine whether a
thing to exist or disappear in this world. And maybe this is the reason that we should cherish
everything that are existed within our life time.
