Geo-projects and Innovation in EducationKarl Donert
A presentation at EUROGEO 2021 to illustrate innovation in education through the projects which EUROGEO, as a Belgian NGO, is involved in. The presentation examines the links between knowledge transfer and innovation and the process that the organisation has been going through. The presentation introduces geo-projects like GeoCapabilties and the creation of a European Values Atlas and those concerning the use of new technologies with different target audiences such as GOdIGITAL working with NEETS.
By Bee Thakore, addressing the UN Committee on Peaceful Uses of Outer Space in Vienna, Austria on behalf of Space Generation advisory council on youth members volunteering for disaster management from space in the Asia Pacific Region.
Digital transformation and the concept of a 'virtual world' was a topic of interest in the 1990s. The Australian Defence Organisation conducted a number of major capability studies in the mid 1990s including the Environmental and Geographic Information Capability Study. Following on from that I presented this presentation.
There are moments in one’s career that, in retrospect, hold significance. The 24th August 2001 is one of those days – 20 years ago today.
On 23rd August I travelled from Adelaide to Canberra and gave a number of presentations on my recent overseas trip on 24 August 2001.
In this document I introduce two audacious initiatives: Aeronatical Intelligence and eGeoBriefs (via an avatar).

Geocapabilties Workshop: presentation at the AAG 2016 conference San FranciscoKarl Donert
GeoCapabilities has been an NSF and EU-funded project which aims to improve the quality of education and training in Geography by providing support for dealing with complex issues in geography. The capabilities approach ensures educational aims are clearly in sight. Quality learning and teaching implies sound content knowledge, pedagogic awareness and knowledge of the students being taught. To be successful, teachers need to be effective 'curriculum makers' and therefore leaders in curriculum development as well as in their own disciplinary areas. GeoCapabilities ensures that geographical knowledge underpins curriculum making efforts and addresses a conceptual framework for curriculum thinking in geography.
This workshop introduces the GeoCapabilities concept and approach. Participants are encouraged to reflect on the activities and outcomes of the GeoCapabilities Project (http://www.geocapabilities.org) and consider how a Capabilities approach, involving Powerful Disciplinary Knowledge, Curriculum Making and Leadership Perspectives can be used to enhance student engagement in higher education. enhance spatial thinking and improve the quality and outcome of higher education courses in disruptive times.

UN-Habitat Governing Council approves the International Guidelines on Urban and Territorial Planning (IG-UTP)
We are pleased to inform you that the International Guidelines on Urban and Territorial Planning have been approved by the UN-Habitat Governing Council last Friday.
We are grateful for the instrumental support of the co-sponsors of the Resolution (France, Japan, South Africa and Uganda)….
We attach here some relevant documents (also available on-line at http://unhabitat.org/gc25/) that we encourage you to use and share with your constituencies, partners and professional networks:
1. Resolution 25/L5 that approves the Guidelines and gives a mandate for their implementation and monitoring.
2. Press Release that you may wish to adapt and disseminate as appropriate.
3. Final Guidelines in the 6 UN languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Spanish, Russian): currently being put in a proper lay-out for outreach and communication purposes.
4. Compendium of Inspiring Practices: sample of an on-going, larger and open initiative to document inspirational and international experiences on Urban and Territorial Planning that illustrates the Guidelines….
We will continue to explore…avenues to inform global and regional agendas as well as country operations. An immediate activity could be to translate the Guidelines in other languages (eg: Portuguese, Indonesian...) for broader outreach and impacts. We are open to suggestions and count very much on your feedback and active participation….
We thank you for your continuous engagement and commitment. We look forward to keeping you with us in this exciting IG-UTP journey.

Building Spatial Data Infrastructures for Spatial Planning in Africa: Lagos e...Samuel Dekolo
Lagos is the fastest growing Megacity in Sub-Saharan Africa, with its population estimated to double in the first quarter of this century; it is expected to be the third largest urban agglomerations in the world. This growth is not without challenges, as the city is grappling with myriads of urban management problems. City planners lack the most important ingredient of land use management, which is Information. In spite of huge investment on spatial data infrastructures at the national and state levels of government, most land use planners at both state and local government level agencies are ignorant of existing geospatial technology portals and unlock the full potentials of information and communication technologies. A statewide survey of the spatial data infrastructures of the city’s urban and land use management ministry and agencies proves its pathetic state, thereby creating information gap void between urban development and intelligent management. The result is has led to a sporadic growth of slums and unplanned settlements which now accounts for over 60% of the city. To avoid an impasse, it is necessary to review the level of geospatial technologies used at the local level and recommend formidable means of integration in the decision making process. This paper examines the level of geospatial technologies and Spatial Data Infrastructure use in spatial planning agencies and barriers to implementation in the 20 local governments of Lagos State and suggests the way forward.

Intermodal Transport Data Sharing Programme (Sep 2021)FairTechInstitute
This was a year-long project conducted in Hong Kong to support evidence-based policymaking, supporting good data governance, green smart cities, and strong data security and protection. The project developed a Proof-of-Concept to demonstrate a trusted data sharing mechanism - Data Trust 1.0 - could be implemented to allow transport operators and service providers to share limited amounts of data for the purposes of limited-scope, mode-specific research e.g. research which asks "how many people cycle to work between 8-9am?"
While this research was conducted for transport operators, the Data Trust 1.0 model is applicable across all sectors. Funding was provided by the Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Commission, and supported generously by sponsors Daimler, MTR, Thales, and Via.

f you offer a service on the web, odds are that someone will abuse it. Be it an API, a SaaS, a PaaS, or even a static website, someone somewhere will try to figure out a way to use it to their own needs. In this talk we'll compare measures that are effective against static attackers and how to battle a dynamic attacker who adapts to your counter-measures.

The target groups of this working group are Master- and PhD
Students, young professionals and commission delegates.
In a time where many of the member organizations are facing
difficulties to attract young people to the profession of surveying this
working group have been created. The goal is to create
connections between “older” and “younger” surveyors.

The purpose of the Foundation is the funding of educational and
capacity building projects and scholarships. The objectives are:
To give grants and scholarships to projects, for instance to develop curricula for surveying
education, training and capacity building, especially in developing countries;
To encourage research into all disciplines of surveying and to disseminate the results of that
research;
To promote high standards of education and training for surveyors and to facilitate
continuing professional development;
To educate people in the disciplines of surveying, particularly in developing countries and

“The pressure on the land and resources - and therefore the
environment - will increase. Sustainable growth therefore will
determine strategies of politics, but also for surveyors. Spatial
information is vital because it shapes policy-making, surveyors are
responsible for translating raw data into pieces of information useful
for policy-makers. Spatial information needs to be reliable and
reusable, there lies a challenge for the surveyor of the future,
according to the Prime Minister.”
