Theseus volunteered to be one of the young men sent as a sacrifice to the Minotaur. He was able to escape the Labyrinth with the help of Princess Ariadne, who gave him a ball of thread. Theseus followed the thread to escape and killed the Minotaur. He then took Ariadne but later abandoned her. Upon returning to Athens, Theseus forgot the signal telling his father he had survived, causing his father to commit suicide believing Theseus had died. Theseus then became the new king of Athens.
