THE ROLE
OF
SCIENCE
-Group 6-
What is Science?
- the systematic study of the structure
and behavior of the physical and
natural world through observation,
experimentation, and the testing of
theories against the evidence
obtained.
• He pursued a degree in Medicine
at the Universidad Central de
Madrid.
• He continually pursue his study in
Heidelberg Univeristy, Germany,
where he focused on
ophthalmology.
• He collect various of species.

“In the house of the Philosopher”
Rizal’s Filosofo Tasio says:
“The Gobernadorcillo learns and enjoys the
reputation of being a sane man. Having learned no
more than to serve chocolate and to put up with
the evil disposition of Padre Damaso, he is rich
today. He affects the petty destinies of his fellow
citizens and at times speaks of justice. ‘That is a
talented man,’ the common people think. ‘See with
nothing he has grown great!’” [Soledad Lacson

El Filibusterismo
Chapter 1
• Simoun was wearing a tinted
eyeglasses.
• Eyeglasses: was to protect Simoun
from the sun;
EL FILIBUSTERSIMO
In chapter 13: “The Class in Physics”
• Physics laboratory equipment at the UST was
kept in glass cases
• Padre Millon asked one of the student to
determine the essence of the mirror.
• Additional query: Does Kamagong is really a
mirror based on its essence?
RIZAL’S PERSPECTIVE ON THE
ROLE OF SCIENCE
• Science as a tool for progress
and development
• Science as a means to challenge
superstition and ignorance
“Ignorance is slavery, because as a man
thinks, so he is: a man without the
capacity to think for himself is not
human; the bind who follows the
thought of others is like a beast who
follows the rope that tethers him.”
CONCLUSION
Science serves a paramount role to us in exploring new
things. And Rizal’s proved to us that we must not limit
ourselves to be more productive despite the hindrance we
faced especially Rizal want us to alter our fixed mindset
into a growth mindset. Science can explain and provide
scientific evidence that can broaden our perspective.
In a nutshell, Rizal believed that science is a silver lining for
all Filipinos to beat ignorance and discrimination towards
the foreign countries.
QUESTIONS
• If you were Rizal being exiled in the unknown place,
how would you invest yourself in the world of
science?
• As a student who are more knowledgeable, How
would you encourage elders who are been stuck with
their superstitious belief that everything happened is
science?

Editor's Notes

  • #5 during his exile, Rizal let himself to be entertained by the surroundings he have in Dapitan. thus, he collected over 340 shells without a conchological library or museum. he collected variety of species and he sent that to A.B Meyer (Dr. A.B. Meyer was a German scientist and director of the Dresden Museum... Adolf Bernhard Meyer) rizal trade his discoveries to A.B. Meyer for a books and scientific instruments the books he tri to have are: 2 volumes (French) Mathematics 1 volume Natural History Collector 1 volume German Vocabulary 1 volume Preparation and stuffing (of birds) 1 volume Malay Grammar 1 volume Kurschner's Lexicon some species were bare with his name.
  • #6  Rhacophorus rizali is a species of tree frog that was named after Dr. Jose Rizal, the Philippine national hero, by German zoologist Oskar Boettger in 1899¹³. It is also known as the harlequin tree frog and belongs to the family Rhacophoridae ¹³. The species is native to the Philippines and can be found in Mindanao, Negros, Bohol, Luzon, and other areas in Southeast Asia². Rhacophorus rizali is an orange-brown amphibian with white, yellow or blue spots¹. It can grow up to 7.5 cm in length and is known for its extended wing-like ribs that enable it to glide across distances of up to nine meters¹. The skin under the wings is blue for males and yellow for females¹.
  • #7  Draco rizali is a species of flying lizard that was named after Dr. Jose Rizal, the Philippine national hero, by German zoologist Wandolleck in 1911¹²³. It is found only in the dense forests of the Philippines and feeds on ants and termites¹. Draco rizali can grow up to a length of eight inches and has extended wing-like ribs that enable it to glide across distances of up to nine meters¹. The skin under the wings is blue for males and yellow for females¹. Draco rizali is also known as Günther’s flying lizard
  • #8  Apogonia rizali is a rare species of small beetle that was discovered by Dr. Jose Rizal, the Philippine national hero, during his exile in Dapitan ¹². It is the only species named after Rizal that still retains its name ². The beetle can grow up to an inch long when fully mature and belongs to the family Melolonthidae ³. Unfortunately, little information exists about this species as many of the specimens Rizal sent did not make it to the scientific catalogues of that era ¹.
