1. Theories of Language Acquisition
1.Behaviorist Theory
-Was based on the idea that language is learned through observation and imitation. The theory
states that we do not learn words grammar because they are connected to meanings; instead ,we
have mental concepts of each word for concept. The theory of Behaviorist language acquisition argues
that children acquire language only due to their own active experiences and not by imitation or
instruction. This theory based on the idea that humans are unique in how they think and learn about
new information.
2.Acculturation and Nativization Model
-is one of the theories of second language acquisition proposed by John Schumann in 1978.The
process of acculturation was defined by Brown as” the process of of being adapted to a new culture”
which involves a new orientation of thinking and feeling on the part of L2 learner.
3.Accomodatuion Theory
-Theory adapted by Giles that says people adapt to others in order who are different than them,
and the accommodation can converge, diverge, or be over accommodating.
Convergence: Communicating in similar ways interpersonally as someone else to accommodate the
interaction, such as adopting a similar tone, accent, or pitch in one’s voice.
Divergence: Communicating in different ways than another person in order to maintain differentiation
from the person culturally, such as exaggerating a different accent, or speaking much louder than the
other person.
2. • 4.Cognitive theory
• -Cognitive Behavioral Theory refers to the role of cognition in the behavioral pattern of
individuals. By formulating self-concepts of the individual’s own accord, their behavior is
directly affected. The concepts can be based on extrinsic or intrinsic factors, both positive or
negative.
• 5.Discourse Theory
• -Discourse theory proposes that in our daily activities the way we speak and write is shaped
by the structures of power in our society, and that because our society is defined by struggle
and conflict our discourses reflect and create conflicts.
• 6.Monitor Model
• -This Monitor Model theory suggests that we should both strive to increase our second
language inputs (like viewing videos, television, and going through books for reading) and make
sure we receive proper error correction in one form or another.
• 7.Social Interaction Theory
• -Social interactionist theory (SIT) is an explanation of language development emphasizing
the role of social interaction between the developing child and linguistically knowledgeable
adults. It is based largely on the socio-cultural theories of Soviet psychologist, Lev Vygotsky.
3. • 8.The Variable Competence Model
• -The variable competence model of second language acquisition proposes that the ability to
use language varies systematically within functional domains and linguistic contexts, and that
such variability is inherent in interlanguage as well.
• 9.The Universal Hypothesis
• -It provides an interesting account on how the linguistic properties of the target language and
the learner’s L1 may influence the course of development
• 10.The Neurofunctional Theory
• -Neurofunctional theory considers the involvement of the right and left hemispheres of the
brain to be firmly related to comprehension and production of language. It also accounts for age
differences, formulaic speech, fossilization, and pattern practice in second language acquisition.
The neurofunctional explanation of SLA has considered the contribution of two areas of the
4. • QUESTION:
• Which of those theories do you believe that you applied the most during childhood? and
why?
5. Language is the ability to communicate with others. There are significant
differences between the understanding of language and speech. Language includes
all forms of communication, whether expressed orally, written, used signs, gestures, or
facial expressions. While the speech is a spoken language that is the most effective
form of communication and considered most important and widely used.
According to the first respondent she choose Accomodation Theory because
because base on her experience his son got his english language and accent thru
thru watching you tube. He imitated the language and accent himself. They are
are Ilocano’s but their son’s first language is english. To the second respondent she
respondent she choose Social Interaction Theory because she help his child to learn
learn the other language to help him understand it and use it daily.. Its best for their
their developing brains and it will stick to their mind forever.
6. To the third one he pick the Behaviorist Theory because he used to show or
demonstrate through action the meaning words. In this manner he trained her
children to understand language with action. To the fourth respondent she choose
Accomodation Theory because based on her experience her kids got their ilocano
and tagalog language and accent thru people nearby. And from us also we talk with
them ilocano in the first place.. They learn the tagalog language by waching Tagalog
movies they imitated the tagalog language by their selves. As their mom im half
ilocana and their dad was itneg but their first language is ilocano now they grew up
they are usually using itneg dialect. And to the last respondent he choose Social
Interaction theory because based on his experience his son had developed
language through this social interaction theory. His son was exposed both social
interaction with his classmates, friends, relatives and to us his parents. Learning
could happen by associations of the aforementioned people during this pandemic
aside on mdl as the mode of learning which is enhanced through the use of
handheld radio as means of contact with his teachers.
7. Language development is an important part of child
development. It supports your child’s ability to communicate. It also
supports your child’s ability to: express and understand feelings. It also
supports your child’s thinking ability and helps them develop and
maintain relationships. Language development lays the foundation for
the reading and writing skills in children as they enter and progress
through school.
