Theories for Production
By Jamie Tilsley
Introduction
In this task I have been asked to create a PowerPoint
which outlines the various aspects within the era of
postmodernism and take a closer look at Jean
Baudrillard’s theory of hyper reality.
I am going to apply the theory to the music video for:
“Without me” by Eminem.
Intertextuality
In this opening of the music video, the comic/movie series
“Batman”. Here Eminem is clearly dressed up as his own
variant of Batman's side kick: Robin. There is a clear
reference to the comic book character in this section of the
video
Intertextuality
 Here there is more reference to the old batman TV
series where a spinning transition was used. Eminem
has referenced this with a transition similar to this but
has replaced the batman symbol with an E, standing for
his name.
Narcissism
 The use of narcissism is shown through the use of arrogant
lyricism. The chorus includes the repetition of the phrases
“Everybody just follow me” and “It feels so empty without
me”. These comments show Eminem to have a fascination
with himself and believes he is amazing and the media is
missing something without his presence.
Parody
 Here Eminem mocks Elvis whilst mentioning him in the
song. He is shown dresses up as Elvis, aiming to
impersonate him whilst he was fat at one point in his
life. The mockery is taken further when he is shown in a
bathroom: following the popular rumour that Elvis died
on the toilet.
Hyper Consciousness
 We are introduced to a scene where Eminem and two
girls are seen standing on a floating “log” inside a toilet.
It is mocked by the fact “True Story” is displayed in the
bottom corner when it is so obviously not real.
Breaking the 4th Wall
 Here the direct addressing of the audience is called
breaking the fourth wall. Eminem acknowledges that he is in
a video and is being recorded and gets his message across
by looking into the camera and speaking to the viewer.
Parody
 Here Eminem is dressed as Osama Bin Laden and has
recreated the television broadcast of him. The well known
CNN has been replaced with ENN in the same font. Eminem
wears a fake beard and dances around, creating a mockery
of him.
Reflection
 By completing this task I am now able to
identify the various aspects within hyper reality
and am now able to implement there uses
within my own music video if need be. I have
finished this task with a greater understanding
of elements such as parody, narcissism and
hyper consciousness.
