This document summarizes the need for disability insurance. It notes that one in five people will become disabled before age 65, yet many do not plan for this possibility. Disability insurance can replace lost income, which is important as over 40% of workers live paycheck to paycheck. While group disability insurance only costs around $218 per year on average, most employees do not have access to such coverage through their employers. This presents a risk if someone is unable to work due to disability.

Editor's Notes
Disability insurance is one of the least talked about lines of coverage but arguably one of the most important. This same type of avoidance is seen in the very low savings rates among average Americans, which is now at its lowest level since the days of the Great Depression. Source: CBS News 2-7-06. This is a recipe that can have devastating financial consequences to an employee and his/her dependents.
It is not difficult to imagine the negative impact that financial worries may have on job performance. By providing income protection, the employer is directly addressing a major stressor plaguing many of its employees.
In 2004, 23,200,000 Americans suffered a disabling injury. Source: National Safety Council. Many consumers underestimate the potential of becoming disabled. The recent NAIC survey (2-07) shows that only 13% of those polled believe that it is somewhat or very likely they would become disabled and unable to work.
If instead of a salary you relied upon an ATM in your basement as the source of your income, wouldn’t you take the necessary steps to ensure that the machine would continue working properly? You’d probably seek out an affordable service plan to keep it operating at optimal performance and ensure against catastrophe. Isn’t your income worthy of the same protection? Disability insurance can help an employee maintain a semblance of normalcy in their life during otherwise turbulent times.
Millions of employees are perilously exposed to the danger presented by the inability to work.
The cost of group disability insurance is usually much less than most people think. Disability coverage can help cushion the pain of increased medical costs for many companies that are now forced to share a greater portion of this expense with their employees. Considering how economical the added protection of disability insurance is, by adding our coverage, employers can provide an additional benefit to their employees that may soften the adverse reaction of increased medical premiums paid by those employees. While offering an essential benefit to their employees, business owners can also realize a significant cost savings for their own personal coverage by including themselves in the group plan as opposed to purchasing individual insurance.
Most disability plans replace 60% of lost wages. The choice of monthly benefit rates commonly range from 50% to 70%. Some features such as the ADL benefit provide income protection for 80% or even 100% of pre-disability salary. The Vocational Rehabilitation benefits offered by many disability plans provides employees assistance toward reclaiming their ability to resume employment. This may include developing and funding worksite accommodations that allow the employer to retain a valuable employee that would have ordinarily left the company. Many disability plans provide assistance, at no cost to the claimant, to secure Social Security Disability benefits. This service includes assistance with filing for benefits and may extend to representation during any subsequent review or decision appeal if necessary. Services such as FICA tax matching provided by many disability plans are valued by employers. Having a disability plan also replaces the need for an informal salary continuance plan on the part of the employer, thus avoiding the inconsistency and potential legal consequences that may arise with this practice.
As with most insurance, long-term disability coverage is often under-appreciated until it’s needed. Most claimants recognize that it is vital to their ability to maintain their quality of life during these times of physical and emotional uncertainty. Various media outlets such as financial news services, magazines and newspapers have begun devoting greater attention to the need for the income protection provided by disability products. A December 19, 2006 article in the Wall Street Journal profiled a recent long-term disability claimant who benefited from disability coverage.
