Theme Of Hullabaloo In The Guava Orchard
INDIAN SENSE OF RELIGIOSITY IN THE NOVEL THE HULLABALOO IN THE GUAVA
ORCHARD
T.V.N Swathi Research Scholar Department of English Acharya Nagarjuna University Guntur
swathitvn@gmail.com Winner of the Booker prize 2006, Kiran Desai was born in India in 1971.
Daughter of an eminent Indian English author Anita Desai, she has carved out a name for herself as
a novelist by writing just two novels, Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard and The Inheritance of Loss.
Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard is in the form of a fable and told with understanding and
tenderness. She made her debut with the tale of a shiftless son of middle–class Indian parents who
climbs a tree and begins to be treated as a guru. Other related incidents create an inextricable web–
the growth and popularity of the Monkey Baba, the attempts of Mr. Chawla and his family, the
arrival of the band of monkeys, the efforts of the entire administration of Shahkot etc. While Anita

For him it is a never–ending flow of misery, a prison. The only time he had a little bit of fun, he was
curtailed and punished. He feels the neighborhood houses rise like a trap, a maze of staircases. He
feels bitter at heart, and thinks his surroundings are detrimental to his mental health. He doesn't want
another job but open spaces and peace of mind. He can live this life of complete freedom only by
escaping from the humdrum of family life. To seek that he really runs away from the home. As soon
as he escapes in bus, he thinks as if he got new life like snakes that get new life after they leave the
withered rags of their old skins behind and disappear into grass. "He thought of how he was leaving
the world, a world that made its endless revolutions towards nothing. Now it did not matter any
more. His heart was caught in a thrall of joy and fear. Somehow, somewhere, he had found a crack."

Persuasive Speech On Breakfast
Getting a protein–rich breakfast can seem like a hard feat from afar but in reality there are a ton of
ways for you to incorporate awesome, high–protein foods into your breakfasts. Today, we are going
to tell you 10 breakfast hacks to help you build muscle (there's no need worry, your food will still
taste great!)
1) Switch up your Smoothies
At first glance, smoothies may not seem the best for muscle–building breakfast. However, there are
a bountiful number ways to level up your smoothie and make it the perfect breakfast. First of all, use
a fruit like guava. Guava has a significantly high protein content for fruit at 2.6g per 100g and it
tastes amazing. They are also low in calories, giving you that extra protein without all the unwanted
extra calories.
2)Add Protein Powder
A great breakfast hack to up your protein is protein powder. Protein powder is, of course, a
wonderful source of protein as it uses isolated protein from other sources and leaves out all the fats
and carbohydrates. There are a variety of protein powders from whey to soy to hemp so no matter
what diet you follow, they are a exceptional way to get extra protein. Plus, you can add them to a
variety of breakfast foods. Add some vanilla or chocolate protein powder to your oatmeal and there
is your protein rich and delicious breakfast.
3)Give Other Grains a Chance
Why not change your oatmeal up a bit? On a high–protein diet oatmeal can look like the carb–filled
breakfast of your nightmares. It doesn't

Repelling Invader Research Paper
Repelling Invader Repelling Invader, addresses invasive, alien plant species that threaten native
species and ecosystems in Hawaii. Psidium cattleianum (strawberry guava) and Miconia calveescens
(velvet tree) are two notorious invasive species to tropical islands. Strawberry guava is known to
form monotypic stands in native forests that displace native Hawaiian species and spread by the
means of seed dispersal and asexual reproduction. The velvet tree possess the ability to germinate in
minimal light, grow through holes in the forest canopy, and outcompete neighboring native plants
for sunlight. Site managers are currently combatting these invasive plant species by the means of
mechanical and chemical control methods, however many of times the plants regenerate.
Biocontrols that host on these foreign plants in their native land are currently being tested for host
specificity so that the biocontrol exclusively attacks the target plant and not the native flora. Before
the establishment of biocontrols regulations, there were numerous mistakes including the
introduction of the mongoose that attacked native Hawaiian bird populations instead of the alien rat
population. Now there is a structured process to screen biocontrol agents for host specificity ...

When evaluations of these biocontrols test positive for host specificity and their introduction into the
field is successful, a lot of labor, time, and money can be directed towards other efforts. From this
article I became aware of the Weed Risk Assessment Tool, which is used to evaluate imported plants
for their potential to become invasive. The assessment utilizes forty–nine questions to score the
plant where below zero is likely invasive, above six is potentially invasive, and zero to six is
uncertain. I learned that the updated tool predicts approximately 95% of significant pests and 85%

How The Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents, By Julia Alvarez
Many people from all over the world migrate to the United States for a variety of reasons, education,
work, freedom, or for crimes like selling drugs, violence, terrorism , etc. Yet, after typically coming
to the United States at a young age, they call it home. It being the only place they know, since they
never return to their native country. For instance, Julia Alvarez in her novel, How the Garcia Girls
Lost Their Accents, refers to the immigration experience, because after their initial struggle,
immigrants feel more at home in the United States than in their own countries.
In America, they are free to do what they please if they are of age and follow certain obvious laws.

Ghana Must Go Analysis
Literature Respond Essay (Option A)
"We Need New Names" by Noviolet Bulawayo, is a story considered to be full of despair and of the
African continent. The main idea that leaves the audience wondering is the change of situation and
the cost of escape. "In Ghana Must Go" by Taiye Selasi, the characters come together to give a story
of their experiences as a family. Both of these stories have similarities due to their settings in the
African Diaspora. The African Diaspora setting gives the two stories a sense of an African feeling as
written by the two authors.
"Ghana Must Go" concentrates on a certain family that is going through despair and their
willingness to tell it all and heals from the rough moments. Their despair and sorrow reflect loss and
uncertainty in the story. The theme of loss is reflected at the beginning of the story when Kweku, a
successful surgeon passes away (Selasi 1). He is a victim of uncertain factors in the story, which
gives us as the audience a glimpse of one of the events in the story. The story also reflects on Fola,
another character that reflects on the theme of uncertainty in the story. Fola has given up on life due
to many negative factors surrounding his life. His family is facing uncertain times as his children are
trying so hard to redefine themselves. His son Olu, follows in his footsteps while attempting to live
a different lifestyle from him. For example, "first in childhood as athlete, then in adulthood as a
physician." (Selasi 7) there

Summary Of How The Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents By...
Symbolism can be used in many different ways. Julia Alvarez uses it very well in her writing.
Alvarez was born in the Dominican Republic and since she lived there it gives her a special
connection to the girls in: How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents because they are based off real
people. Alvarez uses symbolism very well in all her writing especially in How the Garcia Girls Lost
their Accents Julia Alvarez uses symbolism effectively in order to allow the reader to see deeper into
the character's personality. Although Alvarez uses symbolism all throughout How the Garcia Girls

Yolanda's parents check her into a mental institute because she is having a mental breakdown. While
there she is having conflicting emotions and having trouble speaking. She also experiences scenes
that happen before her eyes that are not real. "They spread her mouth open as if she were screaming
a name over a great distance...Yo screams as the hooked beak rips at the man's shirt and chest; the
white figure on the lawn is a red sop." (Alvarez 82,83). Yolanda feels as she has a bird come out of
her mouth and go attack the man she loves. The raven symbolizes Yolanda's inability to talk to
people and to hold on to those she loves or has strong feelings for. The reason for this is because of
her previous relationship that ended abruptly and ever since then she has been having trouble with
emotions and expressing them. Since Yolanda can't express her feelings she feels as though people
who are important to her are just going to slip out of her life. "Symbolism exerted a profound
influence on twentieth–century literature, bridging the transition from Realism to Modernism."
(Gale). Gale is a writer for encyclopedia.com.With this quote she is saying that around the time
symbolism became popular is was used to link realism to modernism. This goes along with what

Death Of Latin American Culture
Death in Latin American Culture Death is part of life in every part of the world, and every culture
handles it differently. Just like every other region in the world, the approaches to death in Latin
America are unique to the area, and have changed over the years. The Pre–Colonial death rituals in
Mexico, Peru, and Haiti each have their own method of addressing this inevitable tragedy. Never the
less there are common threads throughout the Aztec, Inca, and Taino peoples. When the Europeans
arrived in the Americas the beliefs and assumptions surrounding death changed, along with the rest
of the cultural landscape. This tumultuous time eventually led to a very unique heritage for the
modern people of Mexico, Peru, and Haiti. The infamous Aztec empire ruled the Mesoamerica
through terror and religious wars from the 14th century to the 16th century. Their capital was the
floating city of Tenochtitlan that was founded around 1325 until it the Aztecs were conquered by the
Spanish in 1521 (Hilary Dockray, The Aztec Perspective on Death and Afterlife.) Unlike the
Christian Europeans, the Aztecs did not fear death. "...the Aztecs saw their lives as being. They did
not fear death as the harbinger of judgment, resulting in condemnation or reward. They believed
they were collaborators of the gods, chosen to support and nourish the gods, who were crucial for
the survival of the world in general, and for the flourishing of the Aztec people in particular"

The Intervention Agent of Study Is Guava-Juice and Mung Beans
The intervention agent of the study is guava–juice. The fruit itself contains up to 300 mg vitamin C
of 100g edible portion (Tun et al., 2007). Although one may think that quite a lot vitamin C gets lost
during processing techniques such as juice–making, it was shown that 100 ml of guava–juice still
contains 76.2 mg of vitamin C. Therefore it was decided to use guava juice since it is easier to
standardize. Even if the juice needs to be stored up to 8 days there is only a slight decrease of 1.2%
in the amount of vitamin C, provided it is kept at a cool place, where the temperature doesn't exceed
4°C (Jawaheer et al., 2003).
In former studies it was shown that the enhancing effect of vitamin C on iron absorption is dose–
dependent. Only 25 mg of vitamin C were enough to increase iron absorption two fold, whereas 200
mg even elevated the absorption 6 fold (Hallberg, 1981).
Therefore it was decided to include two treatment groups in the study design. These groups receive
either a low (25mg) or a high (152mg) amount of vitamin C.
To implement this idea into practice we take food–technologists into account who produce a
submission–juice. With it we then dilute the guava–juice with the high–vitamin C concentration
(152 mg/200ml) down to 25mg vitamin C per drink. The control group only gets the submission
juice, which contains colouring and flavours to imitate the actual guava–juice.
Mung bean as iron source
The iron content of mung bean ranges between 4–8 mg/100g. Whereas

Strawberry Guava And Its Impact On Hawaii
Strawberry guava, Psidium cattleianum Sabine, is valued by the general public of Hawaii for its
ornamental, straight, red bark and fleshy fruit, which is frequently prepared into jams, jellies, juices,
cakes, and pastries. However, due to false advertising and commercialization, guava as well as
coffee, macadamia, passion fruit, and pineapples are seen as icons of Hawaii, yet they aren't native
to Hawaii. Even though these species aren't native to Hawaii, coffee, macadamia, passion fruit, and
pineapples do not pose a serious threat to the native ecosystems of Hawaii, like the strawberry

cattleianum, is a highly invasive species that damages native Hawaiian forests, ecosystems, and the
watershed, which can be managed through mechanical, chemical, and biological controls. In its
native homeland of southeastern Brazil, the strawberry guava is limited, unlike Hawaii, where it
forms monotypic stands that displace native Hawaiian flora and fauna and drive these indigenous,
endemic, and endangered species towards extinction. Strawberry guava contributes further to the
displacement of native Hawaiian forests by providing nourishment to feral pigs and mice that feed
on native Hawaiian flora and fauna. Besides displacement of native Hawaiian species, strawberry
guava puts humans at risk through increased erosion and soil runoff as well as hosting fruit flies that
cause large scale damage to crops. Mechanical and chemical controls were used to manage P.
cattleianum, however they require a lot of time, labor, and money, yet the strawberry guava prevails
majority of the time. The State has recently introduced a biocontrol, T. ovatus, which is host specific
to P. cattleianum and not its commercially significant cousin, P. guajava, nor any native Hawaiian
plants. Although the T. ovatus will not kill the strawberry guava, the T. ovatus will inhibit the
growth of new foliage and fruit formation. With the introduction of T. ovatus and increased public

Economic Forecasting: An Internet WebQuest [pic] INTRODUCTION Economics is often called
the "science of decision making." The decisions that economists analyze range from personal
decisions such as how big a pizza to order or whether to buy or lease a new car to the decisions the

about these, and other decisions, to develop indicators that can be used to determine the health of

Analysis Of When I Was Puerto Rican
The autobiography When I was Puerto Rican, written by Esmeralda Santiago, tells a story of a poor
girl trying to succeed. The settings in this novel have an important influence on Esmeralda. They
influence her behavior and change her ideals as an adult. Negi goes through many changes based on
the challenges she faces by moving to new locations where society is different. All of these changes
allow her to become a stronger person. When she lives in El Mangle, Negi has to face extreme
prejudice against her upbringing as a jibara. When she leaves Puerto Rico to move to Brooklyn, she
is forced to face an entirely different society. All of these events that took place in Esmeralda's
childhood had a significant impact in shaping her into an adult.
The guava fruit from the prologue, plays a central role in When I Was Puerto Rican. The guava
symbolizes the end of Esmeralda's childhood and the beginning of adulthood. She states "I push my
cart away, toward the apple and pears of my adulthood, their nearly seedless ripeness predictable
and bittersweet"(Prologue, pg.4). From the beginning, Esmeralda signals that she considers
unhappiness to be an essential part of adulthood. Guavas, the fruit she links to her childhood are
unpredictable in their color, taste and ripeness. For Esmeralda, coming of age brings sadness.
As a child, Mancún is the place where Negi felt the most security. No matter where her family
relocated to she always wanted to return to Mancún. Life in Mancún was tough,

Lotus Bassinet Research Paper
Lotus Bassinet Review If you have been searching the web for baby products that you can fall in
love with, chances are good you have seen the Lotus Travel Crib and other products. The reason for
this is simple. Lotus designs items that make it easy to travel with a little one. It does not matter
whether you are traveling to Grandma's house or across the country to stay in a motel on vacation.
Unsure if you should consider it? Check out our Lotus Bassinet review to find out more about this
extremely versatile brand of bassinets, play yards, and travel cribs. The Difference Between Lotus
and Other Cribs/Bassinets/Playards Most bassinets are too bulky to be easy to carry along on
adventures outside of the home. Most of them do not fold up or fit inside of a storage container the
way that the Lotus does. Travel cribs are still rather large cribs that are difficult to carry if you must
travel via a plane. Playards are the same way. Many of them are playpens that are designed in a way
that allows them to fold up flat, but not fold up small. Lotus products fold up small. They are
designed for traveling, but they are comfortable enough to allow you to use them without worry
when at home. The Guava family Lotus crib folds up small enough to be carried in a large shoebox
if you are going to choose the bassinet style crib. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Survival: Short Story and Homeward Bound
DISCUSS THE THEME OF SURVIVAL IN THE EXTRACTS STUDIED.
When we talk about the "theme of survival" in literature, we should not forget the contribution of
Margaret Atwood for the Canadian indentity. Margaret Atwood had written a literary criticism book
named 'Survival: A Thematic Guide to Canadian Literature'. According to her theories, Margaret
Atwood considers Canadian Literature as the expression of Canadian identity. According to this
literature, Canadian identity has been defined by a fear of nature, by settler history and by
unquestioned adherence to the community.
In general, the term 'survive' is defined as 'continued living or existing'. So 'survival' would simply

This short story is from a Mauritian extract written by 'Shawkat M. Toorawa'. In this story, we
experience the theme of survival with the help of Rafik, his fatger and Zubayr.
For Rafik and his father the theme of survival lies in their generation gap. Rafik's father has chosen
a decent boy for her daughter Razia from a good family "He's from a good family." The latter wants
to have the confirmation of the boy's "Khandaan" from Rafik. Rafik's point of view is that we
should not always look at someone's ancestral relations to come for a conclusion. We should always
look at the "Khandaan's" present situation. But Rafik's father explained that if someone has commit
a mistake in the past that does not mean the entire "Khandaan" is to be blamed "Just because one
person does something stupid doesn't change the fact that the person is from a good family."
In this short story there is another character called Zubayr. Zubayr also called Zoob is the best friend
of Rafik. He is doing his PhD at a foreign university. He is in love with Rafik's sister Razia. But he
did not tell anything to anyone. Here we get the theme of survival by Zubayr that is how Zubayr has
survived his love. Also we get to know for how long he has been

Kilauea Volcano
Tony McGee
Mr.Hooker
(Environmental Science)
Dec 16, 2015
The Kilauea Volcano is the youngest volcano on Hawaii's Big Island. Because when viewed from
above it seems tiny in comparison to the neighboring volcano Mauna Loa, Kilauea was originally
believed to simply be a satellite of Mauna Loa instead of a distinct volcano. Research that has taken
place during the last decades, however, shows that not only is Kilauea a separate volcano, but its
magna–plumbing system actually goes over 60 kilometers deep into the earth. The Kilauea Volcano
sits on a curved line made up of other volcanoes such as Kohala and Mauna Kea.
Description
The highest point on the Kilauea Volcano is slightly less than 4,200 feet. In addition, it has a large
caldera at the summit that is 3 kilometers by 5 kilometers wide at the main depression but is 6
kilometers by 6 kilometers at the outermost faults and goes down 165 meters deep. The entire area
of the volcano is 552 square meters. The oldest rocks found on the volcano date back 23,000 years
and scientists estimate that the first eruption occurred between 300,000 and 600,000 years ago.
Despite this, about 90% of the basaltic shield volcano found on the surface is made from lava flows
that occurred less than 1000 years ago while 70% of the actual volcano's surface is 600 years old or
younger. The volcano gets its name, Kilauea, from the Hawaiian word meaning much spreading or
spewing, referencing the frequent lava flows.

Disease Spread Of New Zealand
Disease Risk Profiles
Introduction: As the world progress in the trade and rapid human movement from one place to
another, the spread of pathogens also progresses (WHO, 2001). There are many ways that a
pathogen can get into a new country. Usually the entry of pathogen into New Zealand is less due to
its geographical location. But, there are pathogens getting into the country. This might be because of
an undetectable pathogen, pathogens with no symptoms and other related reasons. For better
understanding of the mode of entry, the pathogen pathway and other properties of a pathogen we
will consider a fungi Puccinia psidii and a virus called Plum pox. It is notable that the detection
techniques, the means of disease spread varies from one pathogen to another.
Puccinia psidii
Geographical spread: Puccinia psidii is a fungi, indigenous to Brazil. In 1884, it was first observed
in the guava fruit and hence was named as guava rust. Later in 1934, the disease spread to Central
America and Caribbean island causing a major devastation. The reason behind this spread is still
unclear (Tommerup et al., 2003). This fungi is found in China, Southern and Central America,
Japan, Africa and Australia (Jolanda Roux et al., 2013). It is notable that a similar type of fungi,
'Puccinia asparagi' causing rust entered New Zealand from Australia in 1973 (Viljanen et al., 2006).
Fungi properties and symptoms: Guava rust causes rust most commonly in the flowering buds, fruits

An Essay About Invasive Species
Out of all the problems our environment faces like pollution and global warming, one of the most
threatening problems is invasive species. An invasive species is an organism that is not native to an
ecosystem and causes harm. They can harm the environment, economy, and even human health.
When an invasive species starts to affect the economy, it becomes a bigger problem because it starts
to get expensive to maintain and control. One invasive species is a strawberry guava or psidium
cattleianum is an invasive species in Hawaii. The strawberry guava is a small shrub or tree that can
grow to be 3–15 feet tall. The tree has a smooth trunk with shiny egg–shaped leaves that are about
2–4 inches in length and 1–2 inches wide. The strawberry guava ... Show more content on

The round goby was discovered in 1990 in the St.Clair River. The round goby is about 10–25cm
long. Round gobies have mottled grey, olive green, and brown markings and the parental males
usually have black markings and their dorsal fin might appear as a greenish color. But the male
round goby is a bit larger than the female goby. It's important to maintain the round goby because
round gobies have been found in hundreds and not only do they eat other species of fish but they
also eat fish eggs when the opportunity presents itself. Round gobies are native to the Caspian and
Black Sea and they may have been introduced through ballast water in the transatlantic ships
originating from Eastern Europe. Both these invasive species need to be maintained and controlled
before it gets out of control. Even though they may have been introduced by accident like the round
goby, or on purpose like the strawberry guava they do have their pros. Like the wood of the
strawberry guava tree can be used as firewood to smoke meat and the fruit can be made into a juice.
Also, the round goby consumes another invader of the Great Lakes, the zebra mussel. So, even
though invasive species are a pest to the environment and economy they can also be a help to

Iron Deficiency: A Major Public Health Problem in India
Iron deficiency is considered a major public health problem in India. It has been shown that iron
deficiency is common in school–aged children from North–India. As much as 50–70% of the
children are estimated to be anemic. One study even shows that 90 % of the children were found to
be below the cut–off point of the WHO of 120g Hb/L (Seshadri & Gopaldas,1989). Iron deficiency
anemia, or anemia are associated with poorer cognition and learning capabilities. This may cause
several complications such as psychosocial, economic and biomedical problems. Anemic children
often cannot catch up with school achievements, but there is convincing evidence that iron treatment
is beneficial for children with cognition problems (Grantham–McGregor & Ani, 2001). Especially
The mung bean (Vigna radiata) is a bean often consumed in Indian populations. Mung beans are
small green legumes that contain high amounts of fiber and protein. They fit very well in a
vegetarian diet where people use the beans as a meat replacer, which is a common practice in India.
In addition, mung beans are a good source of iron, with iron contents ranging between 4–8 mg of
Fe/100g (Barakoti & Bains, 2007). Therefore they may have a positive effect on iron status in
anemic populations. However, legumes do contain high amounts of phytate which decreases
bioavailability of minerals. This is one of the main reasons for anemia, since Indian populations
consume a lot of phytic acid through their diet (Nair, et al, 2013).

Literary Analysis of Esperanza Rising
Symbolism is the use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities. It is a figure of speech that is used
when an author wants to create certain moods or emotions, deepen the story's message, and secretly
tell the readers what could happen later in the story. The novel Esperanza Rising, by Pam Munoz
Ryan, is a story of struggle, hardship and determination following Esperanza, her family, and
servants as they flee from Mexico to California. The author uses a specific fruit as the title of each

Climatic Changes And Global Warming
Climatic changes and global warming are the major issues of 21st century. Guava tolerates a wide
range of climates, provided they are frost–free (Menzel, 1995). Rainfall fluctuations, high
temperature, drought occurrence, soil, poor sunlight and air are the limiting factors in guava
production. Guava fruits are an excellent source of ascorbic acid, dietary fiber, antioxidants,
carotenoids, calcium and contains a lot of nutrients such as vitamin A and C which are present in
quantities 3–6 times more as compared to oranges (Temple, 2000). This fruit also contains a large

Faulty and diseased nursery plants and old non–standardized method of plant propagation are
creating hindrance to guava industry (Singh et al., 2005). Bad quality seedling, improper cultural
practices and lack of planting material are root causes of guava yield and productivity decline. Initial
nursery planting materials and healthy plants are pre–requisite for healthy guava orchards, because
final yield and quality depends on healthy quality seedlings (Singh et al., 2005). Growth and
productivity of guava is affected by various factors including tree age, planting densities,
cultivation, insect, pests, diseases and mineral nutrition (Hammami et al., 2010). Reasons that are
responsible for low guava production in Pakistan include poor management, severe attack of fruit
fly on summer crop, post–harvest losses and occurrence of cross pollination. Food productivity is
decreasing due to detrimental effects of various biotic and abiotic stresses; therefore minimizing
these losses is a major area of concern to ensure food security under changing climate.
Environmental abiotic stresses, such as drought, extreme temperature, cold, heavy metals, or high
salinity, severely impair plant growth and productivity worldwide. Among abiotic factors drought or
water deficit is one of major limitation factor for guava crop (Singh et al., 1997).

  • 1. Theme Of Hullabaloo In The Guava Orchard INDIAN SENSE OF RELIGIOSITY IN THE NOVEL THE HULLABALOO IN THE GUAVA ORCHARD T.V.N Swathi Research Scholar Department of English Acharya Nagarjuna University Guntur swathitvn@gmail.com Winner of the Booker prize 2006, Kiran Desai was born in India in 1971. Daughter of an eminent Indian English author Anita Desai, she has carved out a name for herself as a novelist by writing just two novels, Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard and The Inheritance of Loss. Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard is in the form of a fable and told with understanding and tenderness. She made her debut with the tale of a shiftless son of middle–class Indian parents who climbs a tree and begins to be treated as a guru. Other related incidents create an inextricable web– the growth and popularity of the Monkey Baba, the attempts of Mr. Chawla and his family, the arrival of the band of monkeys, the efforts of the entire administration of Shahkot etc. While Anita Desai dwells deep in ... To seek that he really runs away from the home. As soon as he escapes in bus, he thinks as if he got new life like snakes that get new life after they leave the withered rags of their old skins behind and disappear into grass. Psidium cattleianum (strawberry guava) and Miconia calveescens (velvet tree) are two notorious invasive species to tropical islands. Strawberry guava is known to form monotypic stands in native forests that displace native Hawaiian species and spread by the means of seed dispersal and asexual reproduction. The velvet tree possess the ability to germinate in minimal light, grow through holes in the forest canopy, and outcompete neighboring native plants for sunlight. Site managers are currently combatting these invasive plant species by the means of mechanical and chemical control methods, however many of times the plants regenerate. Biocontrols that host on these foreign plants in their native land are currently being tested for host specificity so that the biocontrol exclusively attacks the target plant and not the native flora. Before the establishment of biocontrols regulations, there were numerous mistakes including the introduction of the mongoose that attacked native Hawaiian bird populations instead of the alien rat population. Now there is a structured process to screen biocontrol agents for host specificity ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When evaluations of these biocontrols test positive for host specificity and their introduction into the field is successful, a lot of labor, time, and money can be directed towards other efforts. From this article I became aware of the Weed Risk Assessment Tool, which is used to evaluate imported plants for their potential to become invasive. The assessment utilizes forty–nine questions to score the plant where below zero is likely invasive, above six is potentially invasive, and zero to six is uncertain. I learned that the updated tool predicts approximately 95% of significant pests and 85% of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 35. Ghana Must Go Analysis Literature Respond Essay (Option A) "We Need New Names" by Noviolet Bulawayo, is a story considered to be full of despair and of the African continent. The main idea that leaves the audience wondering is the change of situation and the cost of escape. "In Ghana Must Go" by Taiye Selasi, the characters come together to give a story of their experiences as a family. Both of these stories have similarities due to their settings in the African Diaspora. The African Diaspora setting gives the two stories a sense of an African feeling as written by the two authors. "Ghana Must Go" concentrates on a certain family that is going through despair and their willingness to tell it all and heals from the rough moments. Their despair and sorrow reflect loss and uncertainty in the story. The theme of loss is reflected at the beginning of the story when Kweku, a successful surgeon passes away (Selasi 1). He is a victim of uncertain factors in the story, which gives us as the audience a glimpse of one of the events in the story. The story also reflects on Fola, another character that reflects on the theme of uncertainty in the story. Fola has given up on life due to many negative factors surrounding his life. His family is facing uncertain times as his children are trying so hard to redefine themselves. His son Olu, follows in his footsteps while attempting to live a different lifestyle from him. For example, "first in childhood as athlete, then in adulthood as a physician." (Selasi 7) there ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Just like every other region in the world, the approaches to death in Latin America are unique to the area, and have changed over the years. The Pre–Colonial death rituals in Mexico, Peru, and Haiti each have their own method of addressing this inevitable tragedy. Never the less there are common threads throughout the Aztec, Inca, and Taino peoples. When the Europeans arrived in the Americas the beliefs and assumptions surrounding death changed, along with the rest of the cultural landscape. This tumultuous time eventually led to a very unique heritage for the modern people of Mexico, Peru, and Haiti. The infamous Aztec empire ruled the Mesoamerica through terror and religious wars from the 14th century to the 16th century. Their capital was the floating city of Tenochtitlan that was founded around 1325 until it the Aztecs were conquered by the Spanish in 1521 (Hilary Dockray, The Aztec Perspective on Death and Afterlife.) Unlike the Christian Europeans, the Aztecs did not fear death. "...the Aztecs saw their lives as being. They did not fear death as the harbinger of judgment, resulting in condemnation or reward. They believed they were collaborators of the gods, chosen to support and nourish the gods, who were crucial for the survival of the world in general, and for the flourishing of the Aztec people in particular" (Mexico and Death, Modern and ... • 59. The Intervention Agent of Study Is Guava-Juice and Mung Beans The intervention agent of the study is guava–juice. The fruit itself contains up to 300 mg vitamin C of 100g edible portion (Tun et al., 2007). Although one may think that quite a lot vitamin C gets lost during processing techniques such as juice–making, it was shown that 100 ml of guava–juice still contains 76.2 mg of vitamin C. Therefore it was decided to use guava juice since it is easier to standardize. Even if the juice needs to be stored up to 8 days there is only a slight decrease of 1.2% in the amount of vitamin C, provided it is kept at a cool place, where the temperature doesn't exceed 4°C (Jawaheer et al., 2003). In former studies it was shown that the enhancing effect of vitamin C on iron absorption is dose– dependent. Only 25 mg of vitamin C were enough to increase iron absorption two fold, whereas 200 mg even elevated the absorption 6 fold (Hallberg, 1981). Therefore it was decided to include two treatment groups in the study design. These groups receive either a low (25mg) or a high (152mg) amount of vitamin C. To implement this idea into practice we take food–technologists into account who produce a submission–juice. With it we then dilute the guava–juice with the high–vitamin C concentration (152 mg/200ml) down to 25mg vitamin C per drink. The control group only gets the submission juice, which contains colouring and flavours to imitate the actual guava–juice. Mung bean as iron source The iron content of mung bean ranges between 4–8 mg/100g. Whereas ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Strawberry Guava And Its Impact On Hawaii Strawberry guava, Psidium cattleianum Sabine, is valued by the general public of Hawaii for its ornamental, straight, red bark and fleshy fruit, which is frequently prepared into jams, jellies, juices, cakes, and pastries. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... cattleianum, is a highly invasive species that damages native Hawaiian forests, ecosystems, and the watershed, which can be managed through mechanical, chemical, and biological controls. In its native homeland of southeastern Brazil, the strawberry guava is limited, unlike Hawaii, where it forms monotypic stands that displace native Hawaiian flora and fauna and drive these indigenous, endemic, and endangered species towards extinction. Strawberry guava contributes further to the displacement of native Hawaiian forests by providing nourishment to feral pigs and mice that feed on native Hawaiian flora and fauna. Besides displacement of native Hawaiian species, strawberry guava puts humans at risk through increased erosion and soil runoff as well as hosting fruit flies that cause large scale damage to crops. Mechanical and chemical controls were used to manage P. cattleianum, however they require a lot of time, labor, and money, yet the strawberry guava prevails majority of the time. The State has recently introduced a biocontrol, T. ovatus, which is host specific to P. cattleianum and not its commercially significant cousin, P. guajava, nor any native Hawaiian plants. The settings in this novel have an important influence on Esmeralda. They influence her behavior and change her ideals as an adult. Negi goes through many changes based on the challenges she faces by moving to new locations where society is different. All of these changes allow her to become a stronger person. When she lives in El Mangle, Negi has to face extreme prejudice against her upbringing as a jibara. When she leaves Puerto Rico to move to Brooklyn, she is forced to face an entirely different society. All of these events that took place in Esmeralda's childhood had a significant impact in shaping her into an adult. The guava fruit from the prologue, plays a central role in When I Was Puerto Rican. The guava symbolizes the end of Esmeralda's childhood and the beginning of adulthood. She states "I push my cart away, toward the apple and pears of my adulthood, their nearly seedless ripeness predictable and bittersweet"(Prologue, pg.4). From the beginning, Esmeralda signals that she considers unhappiness to be an essential part of adulthood. When we talk about the "theme of survival" in literature, we should not forget the contribution of Margaret Atwood for the Canadian indentity. Margaret Atwood had written a literary criticism book named 'Survival: A Thematic Guide to Canadian Literature'. According to her theories, Margaret Atwood considers Canadian Literature as the expression of Canadian identity. According to this literature, Canadian identity has been defined by a fear of nature, by settler history and by unquestioned adherence to the community. • 91. Kilauea Volcano Tony McGee Mr.Hooker (Environmental Science) Dec 16, 2015 The Kilauea Volcano is the youngest volcano on Hawaii's Big Island. Because when viewed from above it seems tiny in comparison to the neighboring volcano Mauna Loa, Kilauea was originally believed to simply be a satellite of Mauna Loa instead of a distinct volcano. Research that has taken place during the last decades, however, shows that not only is Kilauea a separate volcano, but its magna–plumbing system actually goes over 60 kilometers deep into the earth. The Kilauea Volcano sits on a curved line made up of other volcanoes such as Kohala and Mauna Kea. Description The highest point on the Kilauea Volcano is slightly less than 4,200 feet. In addition, it has a large caldera at the summit that is 3 kilometers by 5 kilometers wide at the main depression but is 6 kilometers by 6 kilometers at the outermost faults and goes down 165 meters deep. The entire area of the volcano is 552 square meters. The oldest rocks found on the volcano date back 23,000 years and scientists estimate that the first eruption occurred between 300,000 and 600,000 years ago. Despite this, about 90% of the basaltic shield volcano found on the surface is made from lava flows that occurred less than 1000 years ago while 70% of the actual volcano's surface is 600 years old or younger. Disease Spread Of New Zealand Disease Risk Profiles Introduction: As the world progress in the trade and rapid human movement from one place to another, the spread of pathogens also progresses (WHO, 2001). There are many ways that a pathogen can get into a new country. Usually the entry of pathogen into New Zealand is less due to its geographical location. But, there are pathogens getting into the country. This might be because of an undetectable pathogen, pathogens with no symptoms and other related reasons. For better understanding of the mode of entry, the pathogen pathway and other properties of a pathogen we will consider a fungi Puccinia psidii and a virus called Plum pox. It is notable that the detection techniques, the means of disease spread varies from one pathogen to another. Puccinia psidii Geographical spread: Puccinia psidii is a fungi, indigenous to Brazil. In 1884, it was first observed in the guava fruit and hence was named as guava rust. Later in 1934, the disease spread to Central America and Caribbean island causing a major devastation. The reason behind this spread is still unclear (Tommerup et al., 2003). This fungi is found in China, Southern and Central America, Japan, Africa and Australia (Jolanda Roux et al., 2013). It is notable that a similar type of fungi, 'Puccinia asparagi' causing rust entered New Zealand from Australia in 1973 (Viljanen et al., 2006). The previous times I have dined at this location, the cooking and concepts may have been great, but after a short– run, things ultimately went kaput. For opposite reasons each time, this spot has kind of been doomed. It would, I thought, take Gandalf–like magic to turn this sorrow's ear locale into a silk purse. But, Bottoms Up Gastropub and Tap founder, Mike Muniz may have reversed this hex. Slices of toasted bread covered in grilled brie, orange goat cheese, candied walnuts, and grilled poached pears get topped with bacon jam and honey. If you're wondering where to start, get this. The sweet, smoky yet earthy flavors left me craving a hefty glass of red wine and with six pieces per order, they are perfect to whet your fellow diners appetites. Moving on to the main course (or courses), I ordered the Bloody Mary Lobster Linguini, Brie Mignon and the popular Bottoms Up Burger. The lobster pasta reminded me of a take on a Gordon Ramsey creation and even though the menu warns you of its heat, I felt it wasn't spicy at all. What shocked me was the presentation – a bowl full of noodles tossed in a marinara loaded with strands of carrot, celery and onions (hence the Bloody Mary, I presume) gets topped with a large, whole, shell on lobster tail. The pasta's sauce was tasty, but I couldn't keep my hands off that tail. An invasive species is an organism that is not native to an ecosystem and causes harm. They can harm the environment, economy, and even human health. When an invasive species starts to affect the economy, it becomes a bigger problem because it starts to get expensive to maintain and control. One invasive species is a strawberry guava or psidium cattleianum is an invasive species in Hawaii. The strawberry guava is a small shrub or tree that can grow to be 3–15 feet tall. The tree has a smooth trunk with shiny egg–shaped leaves that are about 2–4 inches in length and 1–2 inches wide. The strawberry guava ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The round goby was discovered in 1990 in the St.Clair River. The round goby is about 10–25cm long. Round gobies have mottled grey, olive green, and brown markings and the parental males usually have black markings and their dorsal fin might appear as a greenish color. But the male round goby is a bit larger than the female goby. It's important to maintain the round goby because round gobies have been found in hundreds and not only do they eat other species of fish but they also eat fish eggs when the opportunity presents itself. Round gobies are native to the Caspian and Black Sea and they may have been introduced through ballast water in the transatlantic ships originating from Eastern Europe. Both these invasive species need to be maintained and controlled before it gets out of control. Even though they may have been introduced by accident like the round goby, or on purpose like the strawberry guava they do have their pros. Like the wood of the strawberry guava tree can be used as firewood to smoke meat and the fruit can be made into a juice. Also, the round goby consumes another invader of the Great Lakes, the zebra mussel. • 135. Iron Deficiency: A Major Public Health Problem in India Iron deficiency is considered a major public health problem in India. It has been shown that iron deficiency is common in school–aged children from North–India. As much as 50–70% of the children are estimated to be anemic. One study even shows that 90 % of the children were found to be below the cut–off point of the WHO of 120g Hb/L (Seshadri & Gopaldas,1989). Iron deficiency anemia, or anemia are associated with poorer cognition and learning capabilities. This may cause several complications such as psychosocial, economic and biomedical problems. Anemic children often cannot catch up with school achievements, but there is convincing evidence that iron treatment is beneficial for children with cognition problems (Grantham–McGregor & Ani, 2001). Especially The mung bean (Vigna radiata) is a bean often consumed in Indian populations. Mung beans are small green legumes that contain high amounts of fiber and protein. They fit very well in a vegetarian diet where people use the beans as a meat replacer, which is a common practice in India. In addition, mung beans are a good source of iron, with iron contents ranging between 4–8 mg of Fe/100g (Barakoti & Bains, 2007). Therefore they may have a positive effect on iron status in anemic populations. However, legumes do contain high amounts of phytate which decreases bioavailability of minerals. This is one of the main reasons for anemia, since Indian populations consume a lot of phytic acid through their diet (Nair, et al, 2013). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This trip has given me the opportunity to experience important moments of his life, and this sustains our connection even with his passing. It helped me grow and develop as a person and shape me into the woman I am today. As I walked out of the airport, the burst of hot humid air swept across my face. The sky was soft and clear, and the sun was shining brighter than nights stars. The streets were busy with traffic, it reminded me of Times Square. All around me, there were Coconut trees taller than 80 feet, with long rich green leaves that were used for shade. In the horizon, mountains hugged each other, as birds danced together in the distance. To my right, fellow passengers brushed by me in a rush to find their families, and reunite with loved ones. Strangers shuffled by me in every direction, in a hurry to get home. There were small shops on every corner, trying to sell anything from hand crafted jewelry to bottles of water. I looked around with awe, I couldn't believe how beautiful it was. As I glanced to my left, a short older woman, about 5'2 with hair whiter than snow and skin bronzed by the sun, came running in my direction. She had a smile ear to ear and her arms were open wide. Faulty and diseased nursery plants and old non–standardized method of plant propagation are creating hindrance to guava industry (Singh et al., 2005). Bad quality seedling, improper cultural practices and lack of planting material are root causes of guava yield and productivity decline. Initial nursery planting materials and healthy plants are pre–requisite for healthy guava orchards, because final yield and quality depends on healthy quality seedlings (Singh et al., 2005). Growth and productivity of guava is affected by various factors including tree age, planting densities, cultivation, insect, pests, diseases and mineral nutrition (Hammami et al., 2010). Reasons that are responsible for low guava production in Pakistan include poor management, severe attack of fruit fly on summer crop, post–harvest losses and occurrence of cross pollination. Food productivity is decreasing due to detrimental effects of various biotic and abiotic stresses; therefore minimizing these losses is a major area of concern to ensure food security under changing climate. Environmental abiotic stresses, such as drought, extreme temperature, cold, heavy metals, or high salinity, severely impair plant growth and productivity worldwide.
