Innovation is now a required output in our companies and critical to the continued evolution of our business. Unfortunately, innovation is often impeded by false perceptions, lack of strategic planning, poor risk management and fear.
The reality is that innovation can progress forward incrementally and strategically to increase efficiency, engage supportive stakeholders and lead to mitigated risk-taking. Understanding how to ramp into innovation can support new approaches being implemented, measured and expanded upon.
In this session we will review strategies for how to action innovation within a company or research program based on experience gained from implementing successful pilots and novel study design approaches.
We will explore insights on how to:
• Develop a stage-gate plan with key stakeholder support to practically integrate innovation
• Effectively pilot solutions with a structure to scale if successful
• Set proper expectations from the start for all teams involved
• Define risks and measure success
• Generate a communication plan that promotes adoption and the value of innovation
These insights will be explained in the context of various case studies in which innovative approaches were implemented into action in research programs.

The word “innovation” has become synonymous with some of the most ground-breaking research and technologies our industry benefits from today. Innovation is now a required output in our companies and critical to the continued evolution of our business. Unfortunately, innovation is often impeded by false perceptions, lack of strategic planning, poor risk management and fear.
The reality is that innovation can progress forward incrementally and strategically to increase efficiency, engage supportive stakeholders and lead to mitigated risk-taking. Understanding how to ramp into innovation can support new approaches being implemented, measured and expanded upon.
In this session we will review strategies for how to action innovation within a company or research program based on experience gained from implementing successful pilots and novel study design approaches.
We will explore insights on how to:
• Develop a stage-gate plan with key stakeholder support to practically integrate innovation
• Effectively pilot solutions with a structure to scale if successful
• Set proper expectations from the start for all teams involved
• Define risks and measure success
• Generate a communication plan that promotes adoption and the value of innovation
These insights will be explained in the context of various case studies in which innovative approaches were implemented into action in research programs.
Practical Approach to Innovation
John Reites presented on effective management of observational and post-marketing studies through practical innovation. He discussed reducing burden on sites and patients by making studies more flexible and using technology. Leveraging technology includes using a single website for study information and allowing various participation methods. Ensuring operational clarity with clear plans, communication strategies, and defined roles and decision-making provides effective project management. The presentation focused on best practices in these three areas to simplify studies through innovative operational approaches.
Recruitment Metrics from TogetherRA: A Study in Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients...
- A study utilized a direct-to-patient recruitment model to collect patient-reported outcomes, medical records, and genomic data from rheumatoid arthritis patients. This approach resulted in rapid enrollment, with the first patient in to last patient in period taking only 18 weeks.
- A total of 1,000 patients enrolled and provided various levels of data, with 48% providing all data types. Compliance with individual study components ranged from 59-82%.
- Future analyses will examine the completeness and quality of the medical record and genomic data collected, and explore genomic predictors of biological response. The direct-to-patient approach showed potential for efficiently obtaining multiple data types from patients.

Social identity theory
Social Identity Theory proposes that people define themselves by their group memberships and will act to positively distinguish their own group from others in order to enhance their self-esteem. Groups prescribe beliefs for their members and individuals will favor their own group and work to advance it over other groups. People can achieve enhancement of their social identity through social mobility, social change, believing the status quo is unstable, or employing strategies that improve their group's status without directly challenging others.
Social Identity Theory Intro
Social identity theory proposes that people categorize themselves and others into social groups, that they identify with positive emotions with groups they belong to, and derive self-esteem from favorable comparisons between their own group and other groups. Personal identity theory
Identity is shaped by the story we tell about our life experiences and influences on who we are. In modern society, people take on different roles and personalities in different social situations, wearing different "masks". They also aim to maintain a good public image and avoid drawing attention to others' performances.
Social identity theory
Henri Tajfel created social identity theory in 1979 to explain how people derive self-esteem and identity from the social groups they belong to. People seek to positively distinguish their in-group from out-groups to enhance their self-image. Stereotyping helps categorize people into in-groups and out-groups based on similarities within groups and differences between them, which can lead to prejudice. The theory involves three processes: social categorization where people are stereotyped into groups, social identification where people adopt their in-group identity, and social comparison where in-groups are compared to out-groups to maintain self-esteem.

- 6. .Rick Grimes: Before the apocalypse he was an honest sheriff in a rural georgian town. Portrayed in the show as “the good guy” The Governor: Before the Apocalypse he worked in an office and had a boss younger than he. “Portrayed in the show as a sadistic murderer”
- 7. These two adversaries first clash over a territory dispute which turns into multiple firefights and other armed confrontations as well as abductions.
- 8. The governor demands that rick grimes and his people leave their camp which is an abandoned prison immediately or the governor's people will attack and kill all of them.
- 9. Before the Governor makes this egotistical demand he first tells Rick Grimes a heart wrenching story of how he lost his wife in a car accident before the zombie apocalypse started.
- 10. This tactic brought on by the Governor is an attempt at shared identity because of the fact Rick Grimes too lost his wife in another form of tragic event.
- 11. The Governor needs Rick and his people to leave the prison in order to muscle them out of the area in order to save face with his people and keep himself in an authoritative position in this new and lawless world.
